OVERVIEW

A classic tribute to the roots of the Les Paul.

The 2013 Les Paul ’50s Tribute nails the look, feel, and tone of the set-neck, single-cutaway solidbody that started it all—the original Les Paul Model of the early to mid 1950s. Like the first Les Paul guitars, the Les Paul ’50s Tribute carries a pair of screaming P-90 pickups, the fat Gibson single-coil that has been beloved for more than six decades, along with the comfortably rounded neck profile characteristic of that decade. A step up to Gibson’s most acclaimed hardware set improves playability and offers precise tuning and intonation.

Just like the greatest Les Paul Standards ever made, the Les Paul ’50s Tribute starts with the classic tonewood combination of a mahogany body with solid carved maple top. When paired, these woods offer a tonal depth and complexity unmatched by any single-wood construction, with warmth and richness from the mahogany, and superb clarity and “snap” from the maple. The mahogany back is strategically weight relieved to both lighten your load and improve resonance.

A solid mahogany neck is glued into the body in Gibson’s time-tested tradition, and carved to a comfortably rounded ‘50s profile that measures .818” at the 1st fret and .963” at the 12th. It is topped with a genuine rosewood fingerboard that carries 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays. In keeping with the stripped-down ethos of this powerful performer, both body and ’board remain unbound, and there’s no pickguard to obscure the finish. A PLEK-cut nut made from black Corian™ subtly complements the black top-hat knobs with silver inserts, while enhancing resonance and sustain. The traditional back-angled headstock is silkscreened with a gold Gibson logo and Les Paul Model.

The Les Paul ’50s Tribute takes its firepower from a pair of P-90 pickups, some of the most revered tone machines in Gibson history. The P-90s currently made by Gibson USA adhere strictly to the vintage formula, which includes genuine Alnico V bar magnets and coils wound with 42-AWG enamel-coated wire for all the growl, snarl, and articulation that has made the originals legendary. The traditional wiring complement of an independent volume and tone control per pickup plus a three-way toggle selector switch allows a broad range of sonic variations.

To anchor it all down, Gibson USA loads in a Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece, with a set of genuine Grover™ kidney button tuners, a hardware set that partners up for solid sustain and precision tuning. Put it all together, and the Les Paul ’50s Tribute presents the perfect celebration of Les Paul’s genius and achievement, wrapping it into a great guitar that brings the look, feel, and sound of the first generation of Les Pauls to the hands of players of today.

Each guitar includes a black Gibson gig bag, owner’s manual and truss-rod wrench.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul '50s Tribute Electric Guitar:

Thoroughly enjoying this Plain Jane P-90 monster! Got the Gold Top/Black Back (which isn't black but rich Dark Brown). The Gold Carved Top is an "orange peely" Satin Finish w/no clear coat but shines/polishes up quickly where ever your skin rubs on it. The Dark Brown Back & Fat 50's Neck also has no clear coat and the Mahoghany Grain shows through nicely. Like most factory nuts, this nut is incorrectly grooved/angled so all 3 unwound strings sound "tinny" in open position. Will replace the nut w/a hand carved bone nut and have the saddles' grooves filed from "V" to round to match each string's gauge. This always maximizes tone...recommend it when you can afford it or learn to DIY. I love the "NO FRILLS" look w/no body or neck binding & the lack of clear coat finish lets you really enjoy the wood grain...like high grade musical furniture. This 50's Tribute LP came w/the Truss Rod loose so it had way too much relief. Simply tightened the Truss Rod a bit, retuned, and the Action came in to near perfection. The Stop Tailpiece was a good 1/4 to 3/8" above the carved top so I tightened it down cuz I like to wrap the strings around the tailpiece, like so many others, and need to optimize the angle across the tailpiece to the bridge. This LP just feels so good...the fat P-90 single coils have an unmistakeable growl as well as a chimey clean sound. The Gibson USA gig bag is aok but this axe deserves a HSC. Thanx MF for the awesome price. U da best!

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul '50s Tribute Electric Guitar:

This really is a great guitar. I would describe this guitar as sort of a tweener between the Gibson Traditional Gold Top with P90's and a Gibson Studio. The finish on this guitar just isn't as nice as the $2500 model. But this guitar will sound just as good imo.
Now mine required a new fret nut, the little e string was just cut too low. Gibson paid for it to be done locally. After that was awesome guitar. Thats only reason not 5 stars.
Also keep in mind that single coils are more noisy, but there are ways to alleviate most of that. First make sure you have clean power. My lighting dimmer switch caused a lot of noise on amp. Also, just touching the bridge or even a pedal will help keep it grounded better and reduce the noise. And you can always add a noise gate if you need.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul '50s Tribute Electric Guitar:

Overall this is a decent guitar but does have a few quality issues. I really like the P-90's and the hardware this guitar has - especially the upgraded tuners. The quality issues that I have are relatively minor but are worth noting. There is a very noticeable seam all the way down the neck where the rosewood fretboard is attached to the mahogany neck. Not a huge seam but definitely can be felt. Also the edges of the rosewood fretboard have a somewhat rough finish to them as if they weren't sanded or finished with an attention to detail. And last but least I think Gibson advertises this guitar as having a vintage "gloss" finish which is a fancy term of saying this guitar has a satin finish and very little "gloss" to it. If Gibson fixed the small issues with the neck's sides rough finish and the neck seam I would have no problem giving this guitar a 5 star rating. Other than those issues I've mentioned the 50's tribute guitar seems rugged, solid and has a great sound. The set up the guitar came with was just OK and needed to be tweaked but I usually expect that from a online/mail order purchase.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul '50s Tribute Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a great value, I was very happy with the quality. The gloss finish, rosewood fretboard, metal tuners, and craftsmanship. The guitar plugged in sounds great through a 5E3 circuit, I wanted a single coil guitar, I am not crazy about Fenders and I did not want to spend a ton of money. I have a Custom Les Paul Custom, it is far superior to any other guitar I ever had including the Gibson USA guitars and it's the only the guitar I play. I was considering a Custom Shop Les Paul Jr and found this, the guitar has a bit of an airy sound to it I did like, but when I put an overdrive in front of it... Total Bliss! If your flush with cash get a custom shop guitar you will not go wrong. But at the other end of the spectrum you cannot go wrong with this guitar, Gibson did the right thing it will hold its value. The set up was good and the neck is thick.
I have the Ebony, really really nice.
