Gibson

A mahogany body with carved maple top, 490R/498T pickups and pure rock tone.

Since 1983, Gibson USA has been proving not only that less is sometimes more, but also that less can sometimes knock your socks off – when it comes in the form of the popular no-nonsense Les Paul Studio model, at least. Originally designed as a model for studio artists but adopted wholeheartedly by countless players of all stripes, the 2013 Les Paul Studio combines stripped-down appointments with the full tonal splendor and unrivaled playability of a Les Paul Standard.

All the elements of the legendary Les Paul Standard are still there, including that fat and sweet maple-and-mahogany tone through two genuine Gibson humbucking pickups. By eliminating a little of the window dressing – namely, building the guitar without binding around the body top or fingerboard, and applying an elegant gold silkscreened logo in place of an inlay – the Les Paul Studio weighs in at a price that players have found irresistible for three decades. It also physically weighs less. The mahogany body comes with “modern” weight relieving that is carefully applied inside the mahogany back to provide outstanding balance while optimizing the sonic capabilities of the guitar.

Crucial elements of the Les Paul Studio’s design include the carved maple top and mahogany body, glued-in mahogany neck with back-angled headstock, granadillo fingerboard, Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece – all design points that have been making Les Pauls the most desirable tone monsters available since the late 1950s. For electronics, a set of Gibson’s 498T and 490R Alnico humbucking pickups squeeze every drop of tone from the instrument, and now feature coil-taps for an even broader range of tonal possibilities.

With these classic ingredients, the Les Paul Studio gives you all the sonic versatility you could ask for, from sultry, warm bluesy tones to powerful crunch to sizzling lead tones. Finally, the Les Paul Studio is supremely playable too, thanks to its slim-taper 60's neck profile and a chambered mahogany body that reduces the weight while enhancing resonance, making it outstandingly comfortable strapped on or seated. Includes case.

I thought it would look too silly to put "smells good" as one of the pros of buying this guitar, but it really does! Even though I have had it for about a year, it has always had that nice "wood" smell, which I guess comes from the granadillo fingerboard. At first, I was a bit hesitant about the granadillo, because it is a lighter, redder wood than rosewood but I have gotten accustomed to the look and I really like it now. I think it complements the ebony finish with chrome. I am fussy about the finishes on my guitars and I have to say this one is really perfect. It arrived from MF virtually in tune and the finish on the body of the guitar, the neck, fingerboard, frets, inlay, knobs, pickguard, were all absolutely perfect. It feels quite substantial to hold but is well balanced and feels like quality. The pickups sound great too. This guitar has lots of sustain and it can sound warm and jazzy or hard rock depending upon the player and the amp and effects. There are a lot of tones to be found with these pick ups, so this is a guitar that would suit so many players. I think if you were always considering a les paul and you will be happy without all the binding on the higher models, you should go for it. Especially if you can get one with this pickup configuration and it's on sale. If you get one that's perfect like mine, I don't think you could be disappointed.

Nothing like an american made guitar. They just feel right, well built and solid. But this particular model has poor terminations, it has paint over the granadillo, came with loose screws and a HORRENDOUS fret buzz on the first three frets. I adjusted the truss rod but there's nothing I can do to fix it.

I'm taking it to a guitar professional too see if they can fix it, otherwise is going back to musician friend.

Aside that, the coil tap sounds cool, is a versatile guitar and the neck is very very comfy. The guitar looks awesome from the distance, if you get close you'll see those annoying paint dots en the granadillo (all over the side) they mass produce these things to a point in which they where simply wreckless on the details.

A fantastic guitar. I got the Pelham Blue and it looks great. The service from Musician's Friend was flawless. The guitar arrived in well-packaged and flawless condition. The included case is wonderful. I'd highly recommend this guitar and Musician's Friend.

It's not necessary to rewrite the Gibson manual. Gibson is the best and so is this guitar. The main thing I want to address is Musician's Friend, always friendly, always helpful and never makes you feel like they don't have the time to help you out.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar in May. This guitar was set up perfectly right out of the "box" (hard case). The action and intonation is spot on. The sustain is impressive. The sound is warm and rich. Very buttery...mmmmm! Delicious! You can even feel the richness of the tone reverberating through the body. This is the beginning of my American Les Paul collection. I bought an Epiphone 339ES hollow body shortly after. The Epiphone...not so great.
In short, this is by far my favorite guitar I have ever played. The only drawback that comes with owning this guitar is that I cannot put it down. Winter is coming and I have chores to do!

This guitar is awesome. I couldn't stop playing it the day I got it. Nice tone and feel. Good quality. The only thing is I got the Pelham blue and it came with cream trim and pick guard instead of the black shown. But I thought cream would look better prior to my purchase so that was a bonus.

always wanted a les paul. ordered one from MF a while back and had to send it back due to serious quality issues. MF took it back no problem and I know it's not their fault. anyway, great deal comes up on this 2012 studio model so I take another chance. Ordered the pelham blue. this one didn't have as many quality issues. the funniest one on my guitar is where it's supposed to have "model" silk screened on the headstock, it has "mode". did not notice until I changed the strings. would have been better off with an epi or ltd but I have a mint washburn wonderbar that fits spot on to the Gibson bridge layout.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

Ok what can I add that has not already been said. First I bought the 2012 Studio Ebony with Gold and bought it on sale. I was astonished with the price and I am extremely pleased with my purchase. The fit and finish of the guitar are very good. The action and intonation were perfect. The neck feels great, it is thin and easy to play and very easy to raise/pull strings. My only issue with the neck is that it is a little wide for my hand size. I also have a Gibson LP Traditional and I like that width much better. I love the sound of the 490/498 pick up combination. They are a nice compliment to the 57's on the traditional and are one of the specific reasons I bought the guitar. I have played and was considering a LPJ which, quiet frankly, I was very impressed with, but the sale price closed the deal for me. The guitar has a great warm dirty rock tone which I was looking for. I had two minor issues, one, the toggle switch was loose and second, the bridge pickup volume knob came off when I pulled it up for the first time to use the single coil feature. I found this very annoying although minor. It leaves you a little concerned about Gibson's quality control. Overall I am very pleased but the sale price contributes to that feeling. I almost forgot, I completely agree with guy who wrote "it smell good". It really does.

So pleased with the service provided by Musician's Friend. First shipment had a small scratch on it; they promptly sent a replacement via overnight shipping at their expense, as well as a label to cover the return shipping on the damaged item. Took no more than 5 minutes of my time to handle, and the replacement is perfect. Very pleased with the service.
