A solid mahogany body without weight relief, '57 Classic pickups and '50s rounded neck

The 2013 Les Paul Traditional wraps several crucial features into a classic Les Paul that always just seemed right, echoing the specs of guitars that rocked the world through the 1980s and ’90s. The New Les Paul Traditional’s tonewood combination retains the great sound of the original Les Paul Standard, with an unchambered back for a thick, meaty tone and superb sustain.

Its rounded late-’50s neck shape reflects one of the most popular profiles ever used on a Les Paul. Two PAF-style humbucking pickups with Orange Drop tone capacitors give no end of power and finesse. All this, and the new Les Paul Traditional looks outrageous with its Grade-AA figured maple top beneath a high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

The Les Paul Traditional is built on a foundation of the same traditional tonewood combination that helped to make the Les Paul Standard legendary when it first arrived six decades ago. A carved solid Grade-AA figured maple top lends bite and articulation to the sound while looking great in the process, and a solid, mahogany back without weight relief contributes superb warmth and depth.

A quarter-sawn, Grade-A mahogany neck is glued in and carved in a comfortably rounded late-’50s profile that measures .900” at the 1st fret and 1.00” at the 12th, and topped with a bound Grade-A rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays. Traditional touches include cream body and fingerboard binding, pickguard, and pickup rings, along with gold Speed Knobs with dial pointers. Classic Gibson construction ensures optimum playability, too, along with traditional specs like a 24¾” scale length, a 1 11/16” width across the PLEK-cut Corian nut, and a 12" fingerboard radius for smooth, easy bending.

Pure vintage-voiced tone with a contemporary edge is assured by a pair of Gibson’s ’57 Classic™ pickups with traditional chromed covers. Both are made in the image of the hallowed PAF humbucker of the late 1950s with Alnico II magnets, a traditional wind in the neck position for plenty of warmth and clarity, and slightly over-wound coils in the ’57 Classic Plus™ in the bridge position for juicy crunch and wailing lead tones.

Both pickups are wax potted, too, to avoid microphonic squeal at high volume levels, and routed through Orange Drop tone capacitors to their individual tone controls for a smooth, rich high-end roll off. The innovative pairing of a tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece ensures solid sustain and precise intonation, while a set of high-quality TonePros vintage-style ensures smooth, accurate tuning.

Each guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case covered in black snakeskin-textured vinyl, an owner’s manual and truss-rod wrench.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Traditional Electric Guitar:

A great sounding guitar, with one major and three minor caveats:

        1) The output from the selector switch to the output jack had not been soldered to the terminal in the control cavity. The guitar would never have worked electrically, had *anyone* actually plugged it in to test. Gibson fails to really finish their guitars, so by luck of the draw my issue is pretty minor and fixed with 5 minutes and a soldering iron.

        2) The control cavity backplate is about 2mm smaller on one side than the inset carved into the back of the guitar. Not usually visible, but naggingly amateurish.

        3) Gibsons tend to have a fret/fretboard hump where the neck meets the body.

        4) The plastic nut is pure white, instead of matching everything else on the guitar which is a darker cream color.

I'm having the guitar pleked properly, fitting an unbleached bone nut, and replacing the bridge with Tonepros. IMHO, it's important to get a Gibson on a deep discount because, like me, you'll probably be investing money to finish what Gibson started. In my case, to the tune of 35% of the purchase price.

But the tone is unique, and my particular guitar sounds incredibly sweet, so it's worth it in this case.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Traditional Electric Guitar:

This is a solid guitar great for any style of play. Right out of the box it was almost perfect. With the 2013 Traditionals Gibson has re-established itself as the pre-eminent American guitar manufacturer. From creamy peanut butter crunch to banshee wailing this guitar can do it all. I appreciate the solid body sustain and the return to the tried and true simple control features. Its a no brainer. Buy this guitar.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Traditional Electric Guitar:

After some 20 years of playing the guitar, I finally decided to invest in a Les Paul Traditional and all I can tell you is this - I should have done so 20 years ago! At least, bought a peer model at that time. I generally prefer thinner and lighter bodies and previously spent very limited time with the LP. However, the tone, sustain, clarity are stunning. I purchased the black version and the quality of the craftsmanship is outstanding. I was fortunate in that I was able to acquire several high end guitars at the same time several months ago and this one is by far my favorite. I feel more proficient when I play it - everything just sounds better. Any style, any location, at any volume....it delivers!

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Traditional Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar new from musiciansfriend about a year ago. It arrived in perfect condition, not a blemish to be found. It played nice right out of the box but I changed the strings to Elixr's from the Gibson strings that were on it. I took it to my guitar tech to get it set up and we both noticed some weird intonation issues.

***The frets on this guitar are VERY DEEP so the strings bend when you play a note which throws off the tone. Usually its not an issue for power chords or soloing but for root chord melodies I find it very annoying. Also, there is a very noticeable amount of fret buzz at the eighth fret on all of the strings.

Overall, however, I am very pleased with this guitar. I used the labor day sale so my full price wasn't too bad, and its a Gibson. nuff said. It is my first ever Gibson, but not my first experience with Gibson. My father owns an '81 Randy Rhoads Custom and I have noticed that all of the issues I found on the Traditional are absent on the custom.

SHORT AND SWEET: If you have the money, get the custom instead. its better made and has a nicer feel and sound. BUT THIS IS NOT A BAD GUITAR. It just takes some getting used to.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Traditional Electric Guitar:

This thing is a beast but in a good way. First off, the neck is chunky but plugged in or not, you'll learn how that neck results in some incredible sustain. Pick a note, go for a bite, come back and it'll still be ringing! The great neck also contributes to a consistently true neck. I set the action pretty low about 2 years ago and that neck hasn't budged a bit....no buzzing...no fretting out...perfect month after month, year after year.

I had originally imagined I would put in some Lollar pickups but for this one I'll leave the Gibson's in....great tone...syrup-y in fact without getting to much in the mids. On the bridge pickup there is plenty of bite for leads. Love the vintage tuners and the weight.

It is a heavy guitar but I bought a wide, padded leather strap and it's all good. You may get some string sticking in the nut (G or B string) but a little TLC will take care of the that (I like Big Bends Nut Sauce). You can't go wrong with this one.

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Traditional Electric Guitar:

I've always been a Fender guy but I may reconsider after playing this guitar! To say this is a nice guitar is an understatement. I've been playing guitar for close to 20 years and this is one of the finest instruments I've ever played. Right out of the box I didn't have to do anything. It came in tune and the action was incredible! As can be expected, this is a heavy guitar but you cannot question the quality or workmanship of this instrument. Because of the weight and the wood used to make this guitar, you can really hear it whenever you play it through an amp. In my case, I plugged it right into my Marshall JCM 2000 DSL and it sounded incredible! The pickups on this guitar are amazing also so I won't be swapping them out anytime soon. One thing that some people may take for granted is the case which comes with this guitar. Sometimes cases are made cheaply but I found this case to be very sturdy and high quality. I do wish that Gibson equipped this guitar with strap locks during production but really, if you're buying a Gibson, strap locks are a small price to pay. After playing this guitar, I'm completely sold on Gibson. Even if you prefer Fender or Ibanez, you'll find yourself loving this guitar. Gibson definitely knows how to make a good guitar!

Comments about Gibson 2013 Les Paul Traditional Electric Guitar:

Waited a couple of weeks to write this. I was looking to replace my 2005 Les Paul Standard Faded. This guitar did that, and more ! No problems with shipping. The Guitar arrived in "perfect" condition, and on time. I am amazed at the artistry, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. For me the set up was perfect right out of the case. I have never had any problems with tuning on my last Les Paul, or with this one. I have been playing her a couple of hours every day. Actually, I have been playing for over 40 yrs. This is far and away the best guitar I have ever had the privilege to play. Very grateful to Gibson that they still have an old school Les Paul. The 50s neck is just what I wanted, plays as smooth as glass. The sustain, and quality of sound, is beyond description. For me, this is the perfect Les Paul!!

I purchased a 2013 model in mint condition from Musician's Friend and could not be happier. It came set up right out of the box. I am very pleased with the Classic '57 pick ups and will be keeping it as is, no upgrades or changes necessary. Very solid build, easy to play and has an outstanding tone.

are you kidding me, get this thing. you wont be disappointed. mine is not the newest model. got the iced tea color. plays like a dream. gets real aggressive if you want it, or real sweet too. I changed bridge p-up to 498t. that's my preferred p-up. the 57 classic+ was just as good. I just preferred the 498t. all I can say is when I finally put the money down I was impressed with what I bought. the traditional is great in my opinion.
