OVERVIEW

A tribute to the innovation at the heart of the SG.

The 2013 SG Future Tribute captures the look, feel, and tone of the guitar world’s most legendary double-cutaway solidbody, and equips it for the player of the future, while making it available today. Primed for optimum playability and versatility, the SG Future Tribute carries a pair of “zebra-coil” ’57 Classic humbucking pickups for a blend of vintage warmth and contemporary articulation, along with a superbly comfortable custom asymmetrical neck profile. Gibson’s acclaimed bridge and tailpiece team up with futuristic Steinberger gearless tuners to ensure smooth playability and precise tuning and intonation.

The SG Future Tribute looks great in a choice of colors, all Vintage Gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

The SG Future Tribute takes the classic platform of the original SG Standards forward into the 21st century. Built in the image of the legendary SG Standards, the SG Future Tribute starts with a foundation of solid mahogany, a tonewood with a long tradition at Gibson. A solid mahogany body is crafted in the distinctive, thin asymmetrical dual-cutaway style, with iconic pointed “horns” and beveled edges to enhance playing comfort. A solid mahogany neck is glued into the body in Gibson’s time-tested tradition and carved to an ergonomic and superbly comfortable new asymmetrical profile that fits the natural shape of the human hand, with depths of .800” at the 1st fret and .875” at the 12th, making this one of the most playable SGs yet created. It is topped with a genuine rosewood fingerboard that carries 24 medium-jumbo frets to maximize the playing reach of the SG style, along with traditional trapezoid inlays.

In keeping with the stripped-down ethos of this powerful performer, both body and ’board remain unbound, and there’s no pickguard to obscure the finish. A PLEK-cut nut made from black Corian subtly complements the knurled chrome knobs and black pickup rings. The headstock is silkscreened with gold Gibson and holly logos.

The SG Future Tribute ensures its sonic versatility and hot looks with a pair of zebra-coil humbucking pickups, consisting of a standard-wound ’57 Classic humbucker in the neck position and a slightly over-wound ’57 Classic Plus in the bridge position for hotter lead tones. The ’57 Classics recreate Gibson’s esteemed PAF humbuckers by using genuine Alnico 2 magnets and 42-AWG enamel-coated wire. They are also enhanced with evenly matched coils for a smooth, singing tone, and wax potting to combat microphonic squeal at high volume levels. The result is a pickup that is thick, rich, and warm, yet clear and articulate—perfect for the broad demands of today’s music. The traditional wiring complement of an independent volume and tone control per pickup plus a three-way toggle selector switch allows a broad range of sonic variations.

To anchor it all down, Gibson USA loads in a classic Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece, then rams it all into the future with a set of super-efficient Steinberger gearless tuners, a hardware set that partners up for solid sustain and precision tuning. Put it all together, and the SG Future Tribute presents the perfect celebration of the SG for the 21st century, wrapping it all into a great guitar that brings the look, feel, and sound of a contemporary SG to the hands of the demanding players of today, and tomorrow.

Each guitar includes a black Gibson gig bag, owner’s manual and truss rod wrench.

Comments about Gibson 2013 SG Tribute Future Electric Guitar:

I picked up an ebony 2013 Gibson SG Future Tribute from MF on their SDOTD. It's made in the USA and shows quality workmanship. The guitar is well-balanced and plays well. The action coming from the factory was ideal; not too high, not too low, with no fret buzz.

As for the sound, the '57 classic pickups are really good pickups with articulation and clarity, but the tone is a little on the dark side. I suspect that's because the guitar is solid mahogany. Most guitars have a maple top specifically to brighten up the dark sound of mahogany. This is easily remedied, though, by turning up the presence and/or treble on your amp.

The Steinberger tuners look a little odd at first, but they're pretty cool. A simple twist of the tuner from underneath the headstock takes care of any tuning issues. They're solid and keep the guitar in tune. Very impressive.

The gig bag that comes with it is high quality and extremely durable. It's well-padded on the inside and thick. I would have preferred a hard shell case, but at the price I paid I can't complain.

All-in-all I'd say the 2013 Gibson SG Future Tribute is worth a go. I expect value for my money and Gibson delivered with this one. Thanks to MF for a great deal on a killer guitar.

Comments about Gibson 2013 SG Tribute Future Electric Guitar:

I got this during the STOTD. I could not believe the price i got this for. The pick ups sounds amazing and scream through my amp. It plays like jelly bread. I would keep a watch out for another great deal on this and snatch it up.

Comments about Gibson 2013 SG Tribute Future Electric Guitar:

I have been wanting a made in the USA Gibson SG for some time, and when this item was made available as a Stupid Deal of the Day I jumped on it. I am so glad that I did! I love the trapezoid mother of pearl inlays on the fretboard, and I love the action on this guitar. It has the Steinberger precision tuning heads and they work great. I also enjoy the chrome volume and tone knobs. The truss rod cover that reads "FUTURE" is pretty dorky though, Gibson. I purchased a blank one and replaced it easily enough. For what I paid, I am immensely happy with my purchase, though I'm not allowed to share the price. But that is okay. I would recommend this guitar to anyone interested in a USA made Gibson SG.

Comments about Gibson 2013 SG Tribute Future Electric Guitar:

Bought this on SDOTD. Had to return it. Axe was not new. All plastic protective covers were already removed. It had two large dings, pick scratches. I was very upset because I was expecting a new instrument. MF offered an exchange but I found it hard to forgive. Come on MF!!! You let me down!

          Sorry for all the drama....

Otherwise the axe played and sounded awesome. Nothing beats those 57's.

          5 stars to the SG.
          1 star for MF.

Comments about Gibson 2013 SG Tribute Future Electric Guitar:

Compared to most Gibson guitars the SG 2013 Future Tribute is somewhat drab in appearance, but sings like the best right out of the box. Mine came with an inspection card dated April 2013 but tune-up required a half step or less on all strings with perfect intonation. The Steinberger gearless tuners do look odd to those of us who spend hours staring at guitars, but the precise tuning and natural hand position when turning the knurled knobs on back of the headstock makes instant sense that this is a better system. Action was set slightly high but was surprisingly very playable at that height and easily lowered. The asymmetrical neck is hardly noticeable until after a few minutes you realize what was a stretch on another guitar now seems easier. Frets all well dressed and seated. Clean tones are crisp and precise but not too metallic with both blues and jazz sounds available. Tube distortion drones along at its best in a broad usable range as the plain looking 57 Classic zebra pickups seem to be the elements delivering the necessary boost making the presence of every string at any fret distinctive. Sustain dwells everywhere. The pickup selector, volume and tone pots are smooth, responsive and noiseless. The chrome knobs look of good quality, but two of the four were not pressed on straight and wobble when turned. I assume they can be straightened but have not tried. The vintage "gloss" nitrocellulose lacquer of the heritage cherry finish found on my SG is consistent and looks durable, feeling especially good on the neck. The finish is not a high gloss. The Gibson gigbag the SG came in is very high quality, but my SG will be found in a Musicians Gear SGS case where it fits nicely. If you can get past the plain look of the finish and "future" look of the tuners and knobs, and maybe the zebras, you have an SG that sounds like a glossy bling laden Gibson that will last just as long for a lot less moo-la.
