Comments about Gibson 2016 ES-339 Satin Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar in 2014 from Musicians Friend thought I would give it some time before reviewing.
Okay, 3 years is a bit long but glad I waited. I own 3 Gibson Les Pauls along with many other guitars and always wanted a semi hollow. I am not disappointed I love the sound, fret board, and the way it has aged. Everything about it has gotten better with time. It's my go to clean guitar but make no mistake it can get dirty also. Mine came with classic Gibson 57's and pearloid tuners. If you pick one up I think you will be satisfied. Just my opinion, Also it has gone up in value mine was cheaper didn't get any deals. So a good investment for me. Try one on for yourself

Comments about Gibson 2016 ES-339 Satin Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

While the ES-335 is iconic and beloved, it was and is a very large instrument with that massive lower bout. Anyone under 6 ft tall often looks as if he is hugging or wrestling with a 335 due to its occasionally unwieldy dimensions. The ES-339 gets, let's say, 90% of that classic sound while offering a much more manageable body size and offering many of its own unique tones.

This particular Gibson division is doing it right - no discernible flaws or shortcomings re: finish, hardware, fret ends, binding, etc. It is a player right out of the box with intonation and action spot on. Although the finish is satin (matte) it still has a nice luster when light hits it. The binding is impressive - it's a slightly aged bone color.

Tuners feature an 18:1 ratio thus they are very sensitive/precise. The bone nut is a nice touch. Volume and tone pots have a smooth 'power curve' without disappearing entirely around 3 or 4 on the dial.

It isn't all Dreamland, however. The G string nut slot needed some work to eliminate that maddening bit of pinch-and-release many of us are familiar with during tuning. I have Burstbuckers in an SG and like them but the bridge pickup in the 339 was a bit lifeless/thin. I'm not much of a pickup swapper in guitars but it was problematic enough for me to replace it with a Duncan Antiquity which has worked beautifully in this guitar - the combination is wonderfully, musically resonant.

Pickup tastes aside, this guitar really does offer tonal versatility without the need for science-project frippery like coil taps and push-pull pots. The aesthetics are top-drawer especially with the addition of the block inlays (I don't like dots). It is, quite simply, a player. And a looker.
