OVERVIEW

Great value in an American-made guitar.

The 2016 SG Special T is an affordable option for the mini-humbucker enthusiast. Reminiscent of Tribute models of the past, this is an exceptional value. It's made of the same vibrant materials as its predecessor with a solid mahogany body and set maple neck. It comes in an assortment of eye-catching finishes, all hand-sprayed to preserve its distinct resonance.

The neck marks the return to Gibson's traditional neck width, using a self-lubricating Graph Tech nut for better sustain and improved intonation when bending notes. The rosewood fingerboard is thicker than last year's, offering a more solid playing feel, traditional tone and better sustain. Electronics feature Alnico-powered Rhythm and Lead Tribute humbuckers that produce everything from warmth to searing leads in a more compact package, that also allows you to swap in P-90s if you so choose down the road.

Chrome hardware includes a tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece and traditional manual tuners that add a vintage note, but with performance that is smooth and efficient. The 2016 SG Special T comes fully set up and ready for action, and includes a nice gig bag.

This guitar is very nice. Bought it as a open box that had been returned. It did have tons of Pickgaurd scratches but it was just the plastic so no harm done and the strings were already slightly rusted but no biggie. The guitars intonation was almost spot on and the action was great. The only fret buzz was on the low e string and only when playing hard (which I do). I bought the guitar because of the mini humbuckers which are actually 495r and 495t pickups in case anyone is wondering. They are GREAT for raunchy low gain rock all the way up to super high gain metal with pinch harmonics effortlessly. Clean tones were a different story. Way too thin with no bass whatsoever. Even maxing out the bass on my amp didn't come close to the bass of my Les Paul or even my strats. I was hoping this guitar could bridge the gap between my strats and my Les Paul and I think it did somewhat but I just couldn't accept the thin clean tones. i think if these pickups were in a Les Paul they would sound perfect but an Sg is already bright sounding so it's just too weak when playing clean. But if you want to rock out or shred this is a great guitar. The neck is thick but very comfortable even for average hands. The finish is very nice. Just a step above a "worn" model. The only other problem I had with the guitar were that the Frets were very sharp. Overall an excellent price on a good American guitar that will hold its value. Just fell a little short

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Special T Electric Guitar:

I've waited for a decade to get my hands on a Gibson SG. This guitar is an amazing choice for SG lovers, and sounds as good as an SG Standard. I got the Satin Cherry finish and I am not disappointed. It plays very well and sounds amazing, especially when the switch is toggled to the middle position. The mini-humbuckers give smooth mid bass tones and allow for searing lead tones when pushed through your amp's overdrive or through an OD pedal. The only issue I have with the guitar is the tuning problem with the G string. That being said, I gave this guitar a 5 star rating because I know this to be a problem with virtually all Gibson US guitars. I fixed the problem by finding a set of string that have a wound g string. If you don't want to change your string preference there are plenty of fixes for the tuning issues smattering the Internet. Just Google it and fix it yourself!

I'm putting custom cosmetics on this guitar. If you plan on doing that as well visit the Philedelphia Luthier's website for all your custom switches, knobs, and truss rod covers.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Special T Electric Guitar:

THE CHEAPEST EPI OR ESP WILL BLOW THIS TRASHY GUITAR OUT OF THE WATER. SEND THE GUITAR BACK TO GIBSON TO FIX. BAD ACTION, BAD FRETS, BAD PICK UPS, BAD TUNERS, VERY BAD SET UP BY GIBSON. GIBSON USE TO BE QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP BUT NOT ANY MORE. BUYER BEWARE. DO NOT ALLOW A BRAND NAME TO TRICK YOU. TOTALLY CHECK OUT PERSONALLY AT A MUSIC SHOP BEFORE WASTING YOUR MONEY. I RETURNED THE GUITAR THE SAME DAY. THAT BEING SAID IT WAS IN NO WAY M.F.'S FAULT AS THEY WERE VERY HELPFUL IN RETURNING THE GUITAR. I WILL ORDER AGAIN FROM MF'S BUT NOT THIS GUITAR.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Special T Electric Guitar:

I picked this guitar up as a blemish, and combined with some points, I got a fantastic deal on a nice US made Gibson guitar. I already own 3 SG's - a standard (full sized HB's), a special (P-90's) and a SG-3 (3 s/c's) and like them all, but this one has the same type of mini-humbuckers (495T/R) that you find in Gibson Firebirds. They have a bright focused sound that is kind of in between a single coil and a standard humbucker, but are hum free. No adjustable pole pieces, so string to string balance is what it is, but not a big deal to me. The guitar played fine right out of the box, but I changed to my preferred string gauge (9-42) and set the action and intonation. Plays great with low action with no need to tweak the truss rod. Some folks love to bash Gibson's QC, but the fit, finish and fret work on this instrument is excellent, no complaints. And I said it was a blem? I couldn't find a thing. My current band does a wide variety of music (Carrie Underwood to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath to Bruno Mars), so I need versatile instruments that can cover a lot of ground. This one does it for me. Only downside to me is the matte finish on the lower priced Gibson's. I prefer a shiny guitar, but that's part of what makes this price point. I can always overspray it with nitro and wet sand it if I want.

This guitar will be put to use in practice at home and performance at a local church. Also do several youth events each year. I cannot find any of the blemish flaws that were noted in the listing. I think someone sent me a brand new guitar. How can you go wrong with a guita that sells for less than a new one and there is no difference in quality. Thanks so much for the produce as I really am overjoyed with the this guitar

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Special T Electric Guitar:

I'm very happy with this SG! I've owned a few others over the years, but this one is better. The pickups sound great, the fret board is excellent, tuners are very smooth and tight, the finish is beautiful, and unlike others I've had it's well-balanced on the shoulder strap.

Like everyone talks about all over the Internet, the nut on these needs to be filed down especially on the G. This is the "problem" with Gibson's but it's an easy fix. Look at YouTube, tons of videos on the subject. If you get a file take it slow, it doesn't take much to take off but material.
Besides that I LOVE this guitar.
Never thought I'd like a SG!!!

Best selling Gibson guitar of all time? The Gibson SG

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Special T Electric Guitar:

Brighter in sound than the standard Gibson SG, the SG special has all the basic elements of the best selling Gibson of all time. First, it is lightweight. My first Gibson was a Les Paul Custom, and after playing three sets of forty-five minutes with one of those strapped to your shoulder you'll regret it the next day. Back pain and shoulder soreness await. Not so with an SG... most are less than seven pounds... compare that to a Les Paul which frequently weighs 9-10 pounds or more. If full access to the upper frets is important to you, the SG has what you're looking for. You'll notice that the cutaway is past the highest fret, whereas most other guitars do not come close. Why there are frets beyond the cutaway on guitars makes no sense. You can't reach them... so why are they there? Baffling. One reviewer complained that his new SG needed a professional set-up before it was playable for him. ALL new guitars need to be set-up. Acoustic or electric. New guitars DO NOT come from the factory tweaked to your liking, because the factory doesn't know you and what you like. If you don't want to pay a professional to set-up your guitar, there are many Youtube videos that show you exactly how to do it. Its not rocket science, but it does take some knowledge and patience and a few special tools. Also... another thing that makes this "special" so special is that its an American made Gibson for less than a grand. A rare occurence.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Special T Electric Guitar:

When I got this guitar I opened up the little bag with the gold warranty and was surprised to find a picture of the guitar on a work bench, probably from the Gibson factory which I thought was kind of cool..

Anyways this guitar played amazing straight out of the box! No fret buzz, no issues what-so-ever. Stays in tune well which is great too. The mini humbuckers have very rich tone great for ambient, blues, indie, or whatever music. The neck is thicker than a bowl of oatmeal which I love. Comparable to a strat's neck but a tiny bit wider. I'm also planning to install a bigsby, gotta have my tremolo arm. Beware it is as tiny as it looks.

Over all it's made in the USA and it's affordable. Even if there were any minor issues with intonation or the electronics it would still be a killer deal either way you look at it.
