OVERVIEW

A rock icon.

The 2016 SG Standard T embodies everything that made the original such a legendary guitar right down to its period-correct knobs. Its solid mahogany body is hand-sprayed in gloss nitrocellulose using a labor-intensive process that is as much about great tone as achieving a great finish. The set mahogany neck is bound with side dot markers for feel and performance.

The neck sports Gibson's classic width that players prefer, and uses a self-lubricating Graph Tech nut for improved sustain and intonation. The rosewood fingerboard is dressed with trapezoid inlays for traditional looks and is thicker than last year's, offering a more solid playing feel. You'll get authentic PAF-like tone and amazing versatility on this year' SG Standard T from dual 490R (neck) and hotter 498T (bridge) humbuckers. In any position they sound amazing.

Chrome hardware includes a tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece, and traditional manual tuners that add a vintage note, but with modern performance. The 2016 SG Standard T comes fully set up and ready to hit the stage right out of its deluxe padded gig bag.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

Seriously... the SG standard? You haven't heard enough about these to where you need to read my review.... dude, hope that rock you lived under was comfy.

So I've been a life long lover of Les Pauls. Who hasn't? I mean really? But the SG is awesome because it's less than half the weight of any of my Les Pauls. I'm so used to ripping my shirts with my bulging biceps picking up Les Pauls, that I save so much money on my wardrobe with the SG.

Just be forewarned, the first time you pick it up, it's so light, that I used the same sleeve tearing force I do for Les Pauls, and threw my SG through my ceiling, that's how light it is. I actually have to put it in the hanger upside down to keep it from floating away.

The sound? Seriously... okay pal, go out and pick up some AC/DC, or some Black Sabbath, or The Doors... and don't download it, you're going to be an SG player... be a man, go to the local record store, and buy a hard copy of so you can smash it over your head in a fit of guitar orgasmic rage when your life suddenly goes from playing Dungeons and Dragons to having orgies with super models backstage. This thing sounds amazing. I plugged it into my amp, and just tuning the guitar up, Led Zepplin said they'd fire Jimmy Page if I would join them.

Here's my only real beef.

A gig bag? And not even a great one at that.... I mean this guitar cost more than my first two cars combined. You only give me a gig bag to protect that lean back headstock?! Do you guys have a surplus of necks you're trying to sell when people break theirs?

I mean it's not that much of a beef, I have too many cases as it is. But for someone who this is their first good guitar, it kinda stinks they're going to shell out another 100+ buckeroonies for a case.

And why only two colors. That means I'm only tempted to buy two SG standards. (I'd really like a black one if anyone wants to send me a gift card to buy one, my red one is really sweet, but it was a really hard choice)

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

This guitar is absolutely perfect for my needs. I play rock/garage/blues and this SG has a great range of tones. The neck pickup is excellent for rhythm. Great mid-range clarity that makes chords of all variations pop! The bridge pickup is slightly hotter, and provides that classic bridge rock and roll sound. Overall, these pickups are on the darker side, but certainly not dark or muddy. They are a pleasant dark that remain clear with various levels of overdrive and playing styles.

The guitar itself is a thing of beauty. I got the Cherry finish and it's flawless. Also worth noting: I do not have any significant neck dive. It's very well balanced. The neck plays smoothly, the frets are even, and the hardware looks great. This guitar is easily my number 1 go to guitar in my fleet. Oh, and the gig bag is awesome. Who needs a hard case.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I'm not sure where to even start. This guitar is simply amazing. It's light, balanced, and comfortable. Tone wise this sg is truly versatile. Good old classic tones to metal. Maybe djent? Probably. I'm in a post hardcore band and this guitar does everything i need it to. It stays in tune very well. I haven't had to make any adjustments on the truss rod or bridge as of yet and I've owned for about 9 months now. I left everything stock on this guitar. I've felt no need to modify this bad boy at all. The pickups are great. The 498t in the bridge is a fantastic pickup and works extremely well with this guitar. I can't speak much to the neck pickup as I really don't use it much for shows. Maybe at home but not live. I actually prefer the gig bag this guitar comes with as apposed to the traditional hard shell case. At least for driving to shows the gig bag takes up less space in the car and keeps the guitar light for carrying. Theck is super comfy. I have small hands and can play it comfortably. I never thought I'd be able to afford a Gibson SG New but now I own one. This guitar is worth every penny and is a true work horse. It will get anything done you need it to. Get one.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

Even though Ive wanted this guitar for years, it took me a while to warm up to it. At first, I wasn't impressed....didnt seem to do anything poorly just didn't seem to shine like my Les Paul and ES335 did. Now after playing it for a couple of weeks, Its becoming my go to guitar (out of 6). I love the neck. Ive got the strings set way down (no buzz), and when pushed, it has some big teeth.

Quality is pure Gibson. No flaws, perfect. I wish it would have come with a hard case, but I understand they were trying to keep it affordable.....the gig bag is nice anyway.

Home run again Gibson, keep up the good work!

Much easier to play than a Les Paul. This guitar is righteous from Gibson!

Glad I was home when it came. The shipping box left no question as to what was on the porch. Frankly, I was kind of surprised that the Gibson name and a large depiction of the headstock would be so visible. It was well packed, the gig bag is substantial, best I've seem. Would have been much better if it came in a case given the price. The warranty says it has to be filed within 15 days of purchase. Well. it took 7 days to get here. Hope it's not a problem.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

This guitar brings a happy wicked grin to my face. I am having so much fun with this. The quality, and beauty is top, and the playability is awesome with a solid feeling fret board and great action. So that covers the usual stuff. The sound is delicious. It hypnotizes me. I think I understand why some are saying that the pickups aren't as powerful as some, but I think that is what the amp is for. If I'm not right about that, the pickups are meant to be changed out if you so desire. Then you have two options for pickups on hand. I have seen that there are a lot of different pickups available. I might be tempted to try some p-90 s myself.

I have to admit that I would have liked coil tap/splitting on this. I do like a versital guitar even though I crave the natural SG tone. It just makes me feel like I am getting more guitar for my buck. What if I want to play with a more "Edge" like sound.

So I'm not trying to sound like an advertisement here, but if you want this guitar...you will not be disappointed. I will say this. People like myself who love the SG usually end up with more than one. With Gibson, they are constantly changing features and specifications every year with trying to keep everyone happy, and they never are. So if you buy one this year, you may never see one just like it again. So you can't always expect to find the same thing next year. (Coil tap is one of the things they don't offer this year)

The Gibson SG is my 9th guitar. I've wanted to add the SG to my collection for a long time. Was all set to do it in 2015 but like so many did not like the radical changes Gibson made to a classic. I was so pleased when the 2016 model came out and embraced the SG tradition that I knew this was the year. I bought the Heritage Cherry. The finish is flawless. It is a beautiful guitar, light weight, easy to hold, easy to play, a comfortable neck, and just feels good in your hands. Every red blooded guitar player needs a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson SG Standard. Musicians Friend as always worked to give me the best deal possible. I've discovered that if you call and ask for 15 to 20% off, they often surprise you and say "yes". Great company, great guitar. I'm pleased.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

This is an excellent guitar. Plays great. Excellent neck. Slightly on the wide side but still fits the hand very well. Great low action. The Plek system is for real guys! Played great right out of the box. The pickups are PAF style lower output slightly dark pickups. Keep in mind this is an all mahogany guitar with a rosewood board which will be a bit darker naturally. So I swapped out the bridge PU for a Duncan Custom and now this thing is a rock and roll beast. No fancy coil taps or boost switches but do you really need all of that stuff on a Gibson? You buy a Gibson for the classic tones of a full on humbucker not because you can make it sound like a strat or tele. This gets a 5 out of 5 for me. It checks all the boxes. It's affordable. It plays beautifully. I love the neck PU. Sounds like molten lava or melted butter. So warm and fat and it still keeps up with the powerful Duncan Custom. And the sustain on this guitar. Holy smokes! Everyone always talks about the sustain on a Gibson but you won't believe the hype until you plug one in for yourself. The notes seem to bloom and ring out forever. I own one of everything and this guitar is everything you wish it could be. Another note about the pickups. If you run this thing thru a Marshall with the original pickups on a low crunch setting it really does nail the ACDC thing in spades. I just prefer a little more power in my bridge PU that's all. Highly recommended. This is the real deal people!

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

Like virtually every guitar I've purchased in the last year (about five), this one needed adjustment out of the box. If you want a guitar that plays perfectly at first glance, you should probably visit a guitar store and pick one out that feels good to you. Alternately, if you order online, understand it may need an inexpensive setup. Most commonly, action is too high out of the box (and I don't mean for my taste). Partly, because there's not enough tension on the truss rod but also because the bridge is set too high. These are simple adjustments to make on a Gibson SG but not recommended for someone who is not knowledgeable and/or comfortable making them. I buy online because it expands my options and it's typically less expensive. But stick with reputable dealers or sellers.

I am normally a huge Les Paul fan, but I can't put this guitar down! I bought the guitar as a the level 3 scratch and dent and it just had a couple little marks on it! This is an awesome guitar. I have owned probably 10 SG's and this one with the 498 pickups is one of my favorites. You cannot go wrong with a Gibson.

Great quality- found no flaws. Ok pickups, not as full sounding as the Gibson Classics on my Les Paul, but still gets good all- around sounds. Doesn't do the big neck dive I've heard so much about. With the reputation for neck breakage, a hard case would be more secure. The only real gripe I've got is that the jack really holds the cable plug so tightly, its hard to remove without a big yank.

I received my SG on 6/14/16 and could not put this guitar down. I played it for 5 straight hours. This is my first Gibson I have bought. I always wanted a Les Paul but just could not afford that much to put in a guitar. I am so happy with this guitar; to me it plays and feels better than a Les Paul. Thank you Gibson for putting such a great guitar out in the market that I could afford. I absolutely love this beast!

I received my first "Laurel" electric guitar as a birthday present in '71 at age 8. I messed around with it somewhat through and after college, and purchased several better quality guitars later on. They were fun, but I didn't take them too serious. A couple of months ago, a buddy loaned me his '98 SG and it was an eye opener. I had to have my own. After a lot of research, I bought my SG through MF. The set up was perfect!! I am now playing more than I have in the last 10 years, and have the calluses to prove it. Excellent guitar and and Excellent experience through MF! I also recommend the Marshall MG30CFX amp, if you want to rip it up around the house or just jamming with friends.
