OVERVIEW

(Open Box) The flagship SG, with classic looks and sound with exclusive gold hardware.

The flagship of the SG range, this SG Standard 2017 comes in an exclusive gold hardware and represents a superb blend of historic looks, tone, contemporary versatility and playability. Its iconic asymmetrical double-horned body styling and smaller "teardrop" pickguard harken back to the originals of the early ’60s, and the Classic ’57 humbuckers likewise take you straight back to those hallowed PAF tones.

When uncompromising performance matters, locking Grover kidney-button tuners, a SlimTaper neck and rosewood fingerboard with rolled binding, Gibson's finest modern aluminum tune-o-matic bridge and stop bar tailpiece with elegant chrome plating provide a stylish and modern SG playing experience. The SG Standard 2017 is delivered in a classic Gibson hardshell case with a Gibson multi-tool, a premium leather strap and a polishing cloth.

I picked this up from Guitar Center. It was a floor model. Played it for about an hour, and then took the plunge. Overall, great guitar. Not to many flaws, however, I played a gig the night I bought it, and I had my guy do an adjustment and set up on it. I can't believe Gibson ships these guitars out without a thorough set up. Theres a slight brownish discoloration on the back around the strap button, so I was able to get a slight discount on the guitar. Almost a residue from a strap, but its under the paint. Hmm.

The locking tuners are new to me. I figured them out, and they work pretty decent. Might swap them out for normal Grover tuners however, I'm not sure that the tightening mechanism can hold the strings in tune for 3-4 hours of playing a gig. They slip out of tune just slightly every so often. The other issue I had is the paint cracking a little bit around the tail piece bushing. I noticed another persons review had this same issue. Once, again, QUALITY CONTROL Gibson. Get it right, guys. You are Gibson, after all.

In the end, this was the first Gibson I've owned. I've been playing for 10 years, exclusively a strat player, so this is a whole new animal to me, and I love it. The humbuckers sound fantastic, and I haven't had any electronics issues.

Truly a killer guitar, once you have it set up correctly.

The. Guitar showed up and the finish was pathetic. Fret board had chips on the sides, Crack at the neck joint, strings buzzed and intonation was way off. I can't believe they are asking the kind of money for such poor qc. Sending it back.

        Slick Guitar

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard Gold Series Electric Guitar:

The Arctic White finish with gold hardware is really eye catching! Very nice, rich rosewood fingerboard. Considering the price, I was a bit disappointed in the finish - it is obviously a repainted heritage cherry standard, as you can see the red coming through on a couple of edges at the the neck joint and the back panel. Paint is also flaking a bit at the tailpiece bushing. Sounds great through my Marshall DSL!

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard Gold Series Electric Guitar:

My new "go to" axe! Wonderful "all access" neck and no back strain. I love my '60 Custom Shop VOS, but the SG feels like it's made out of balsa wood next to it. Sure, the tone is denser on the Paul, but sustain is virtually identical and that surprised me. Open tune it and it is one killer slide guitar, too. Just could not be happier with this baby!

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard Gold Series Electric Guitar:

Everything you would expect from Gibson. Fit and finish is perfect. Right out of the box just tune up and go. Intonation is perfect. Hand rolled neck edges are smooth and comfortable. Gold hardware looks awesome. Grover tuners are top notch and turn slowly for fine tuning. They are also lightweight. 57 classic pickups are great but take some getting used to. They are not for metal and you will have to learn how to incorporate the tone knob into your playing in order to get the fullest from these pickups. Even with the factory setup this guitar is fast and smooth. I'm getting tones from this guitar you just can't get with anything else.
