OVERVIEW

The flagship SG, with classic looks and sound, plus modern American craftsmanship.

When the double-cutaway SG was unveiled as the (temporary) replacement for the original single-cutaway Les Paul in 1961 it quickly proved itself far more than just a stand-in. An overnight success, this innovative guitar quickly became a favorite with rock, blues and jazz players and more. The flagship of the SG range, the SG Standard 2017 T represents a superb blend of historic looks, tone, contemporary versatility and playability. Its iconic asymmetrical double-horned body styling and smaller "teardrop" pickguard harken back to the originals of the early ’60s, and the Classic ’57 humbuckers likewise take you straight back to those hallowed PAF tones. When uncompromising performance matters, locking Grover kidney-button tuners, a slim-taper neck and rosewood fingerboard with rolled binding, Gibson's finest modern aluminum Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop bar tailpiece with elegant chrome plating provide a stylish and modern SG playing experience. The SG Standard 2017 T is delivered in a classic Gibson hardshell case with a Gibson multi-tool, a premium leather strap and a polishing cloth.

The piano finish on this guitar is so shiny, all of your fingerprints show up clear as day, constantly have to wipe them off. Especially on the pickups and tuning pegs, everything with a chrome finish loves to show filth. Also, the back of the neck is hard to slide up and down on if you are sweaty, but you get used to it after one or two days. Otherwise, i am very impressed with this beautiful instrument, and highly recommend it. The other problem, was the strings it came with. They were put straight through the hole, and not even wound a whole time, and the excess was trimmed off. As soon as I tuned it up to play, the tension was too much and they started coming off. Had to buy new strings, but the instrument is outstanding.

While the sale and customer service peeps at MFI were top notch (as always) with my order for this guitar, it seems that Gibson really hasn't gotten past some of the issues with some of it's products. The finish on the guitar "looks" great from a distance but close examination not so much. It will scratch if you breathe on it and it was impossible to keep the A and G strings in tune even with Gibson spec. neck relief. It's sad to see this while less pricey instruments don't have these issues. I returned it for exchange.

  • Gibson's warranty is junk if yoy olan ti gig .

Best Uses

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

The warranty sucks, unless you buy a warranty fron Mf.It's not what a Gibson should be. If you are planning to gig with it the factort warranty is void. That's like buying a new car and not being able ro take it out of the garage. Shame ib you Gibson. Mt Fenders have lifetime warranties on craftmanshio

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I wrote a review on this guitar previously- don't know what happened to it. BUT I'm impressed enough to write another! I've been playing for over 40 years; over 30 playing electric guitar. It doesn't get much better than this. Subjective things aside- there is a point where your money will buy you more aesthetics, but not better quality or tone. The fit and finish on my guitar was superior, period! I love the 57 Classic pickups- they fit my playing styles quite well; Classic Rock, Blues, R&B; some Jazz. Very nuanced and versatile IMO! I like the neck profile- not a chunky as my 2000 LP, but for a "slim taper" neck not uncomfortably thin. Fretwork is excellent- I understand these got the PLEK treatment- the guitar plays in tune up and down the neck and only needed slight tweaking for intonation and action (action to my preference- just under 4/64ths at the 15th). I LOVE the "rolled" fingerboard binding- the finish is rich and deep. Inlays are perfect...if you're looking for a classic looking SG, USA made, get this one! To my joy, it DOESN'T have the robot tuners. Quality Grover locking machines. No neck dive (I use a quality strap, though). VERY comfortable and versatile! I DON'T like the PCB board innards- but I can live with them. No negative effect on tone. I just prefer PTP...

Another reviewer comments Gibson's warranty is no good as it precludes gigging. I read it over several times- NOTHING in their warranty AT ALL that comes close to indicating a void if taken out to use in public performance! Unless warranties are different for different countries, I think some careful reading is in order for the naysayer!

I'm extremely happy; keep up the good work, Gibson!

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I bought one of these black 2017 SG standards from MF back in November.
I was reluctant to go with Gibson because throughout the years all you here from the Gibson purists is how quality control has gone WAY down and all the new designs are trash and how Gibson has gone downhill blah, blah, blah... I started playing back in '89, I played B.C.Rich, Ibanez, Washburn, esp/LTD, Epiphone & Fender but never even held a Gibson until I bought this and all I have to say is "what took me so long"? This SG is a flawless machine made for jammin! The '57 Classic pickups are amazing for heavy distortion or light dirty tones, really hot & smooth. And they are 4 conductor wiring even though the stock pots aren't push/pull so there's the possibility of more wiring options if desired. Overall I've been extremely impressed with my first Gibson experience.

Great guitar right out the case. No adjustments. Sounds terrific with Fender Blues Junior. .009 a little light and will change to heavier gauge. Nice classic Gibson case, strap and tool kit is a nice touch and a pic of guitar on final workbench ! Buy two !

Look here, if you're on the fence about this guitar, don't think about it. just do it. When I unpacked it and opened the case, I saw the picture they enclose when the guitar is in, what i believe, the final setup department. I almost shed a tear. I says awwww that's my girl. I have read about the ups and downs of gibsons quality but my sg looks and feels like she was built with pride. Go try one out at your local guitar shop and you will see.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I've been a Fender guy most of my guitar-playing life (40+ years). My line used to be "I love the way Gibson's sound, in someone else's hands! Then, about 3 years ago, my mind was opened to the subtleties and potential of humbucker equipped guitars! Since then, a 2000 Gibson LP in Ruby Gloss finish has become one of my two "number one" guitars! (LOL)

Not an expert on Gibson humbucking pickups but this SG Standard T has the 57 Classics. I feel they are dynamic and sound great played clean as well as with overdrive / mild distortion. (I play classic rock, alt. rock, blues and original music along those lines. So I can't speak to how they do with heavier distorted sounds.) Through my Alessandro PTP 65 Deluxe Reverb and my Fender Mustang III v2 this guitar nails the sounds that I want. Clean and chimey tones (plenty of depth and harmonics) through punchy overdrive- this baby has it in spades.

More "in your face" than my LP (with 490R / 498T pickups) but both feature the Alnico 2 magnets. The 57's can be smooth, too!

Admittedly, it took me a couple of days to adjust to the difference in feel (mostly neck feel- the SG neck is mounted higher in the body than an LP) but seated or standing, it did not take me long to bond with it!

I have none of the neck dive folks seem to worry about with an SG- but I'm using a quality Levy's leather slightly padded strap. To me, cheap straps give you exactly what you pay for...

Frets are immaculate; action: about 10 minutes of tweaking to get set up to my liking. Love the new neck binding; slightly rolled to provide a broken in feel right out of the box! Fit and finish are as perfect as I've ever seen on a production guitar- excellent!

Noted the volume pots (PCB board mounted rather than PTP- I favor PTP) have what I'd call a "high taper"; Volume increases slowly until about 7 on the dial, then increases dynamically from there.

This guitar is a keeper and will be a welcome addition to my electrics! Bet it will be for you, too!

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

It would have been 5 stars if the bridge pick up ring and pick up were mounted correctly. As soon as I opened the case I noticed the bridge pick up was crooked. I could see that the pick up ring was not flush with the body. I took the pick guard off and loosened up the ring and pick up. Put it all back together and it was perfect. I set up the guitar to my liking and I couldn't be happier. It plays, sounds and looks great! Gibson also throws in some great case candy, multi-tool, leather strap and a picture on the work bench. Hopefully my issue was caused in shipping because I don't see how he did dot notice the pick up.

Contrary to some other reviews, the fit an finish on the SG I received is impeccable. It arrived with a nice, low action, no finish issues, and not a speck of lacquer anywhere it shouldn't be. The rolled binding offers a really nice feel out of the box and the neck is awesome. I hadn't played 57 Classics before this guitar and I must say that I absolutely love them.

I considered buying another Les Paul and ultimately chose this SG, and I am glad I did. It's an absolutely awesome guitar.

I've owned 2 SGs (and about 30 other guitars) previously. I can't remember ever picking up a guitar right out of the case and smiling so hard! Perfect setup, perfect finish, frets ends are clean, plays like butter. I've only had it a day, so I have to break it in a bit, but I am easily nailing licks I've had issues with on other guitars. First gig with it tomorrow, so I'll have a better idea but I LOVE this guitar - even more than my late 60's standard that "disappeared" several years ago.

This guitar is really fun to play. String bends are honestly the easiest I've ever experienced . I see the term plays like butter used on a lot of comments. I have to this one really does. Guitar is ultra light and is a rock machine. The 57 pickups really sound off. Sustain forever, no neck dive like I've seen on some reviews. If you're looking for a great quality, versital guitar you would be challenged to find anything better than this highly recommend. And as always musicians friend has great knowledgeable staff that make the process supper easy. Got it 2 days after the purchase.

Great guitar has great feel because of the lighter wood but the best thing is the finish it's so cool I don't think you can find a better looking SG. Mine was a open box so saved some money had no noticeable blemish. Looks awesome next to my Dean acoustic and the Tabaco burst telecaster. I'm in guitar heaven!!

This guitar is great. I love everything about it, the slim nek is so smooth to play, the pickups sounds great either clean or distorted. The only thing I didn't like is the pickguard, I like the full size pickguard, but other than that, this guitar is a monster, a must have!
