Astounding Value in a Genuine American-Made SG

Classic rock doesn’t get much bigger than AC/DC, and no one wallops out the massive, bone-crunching tone like Angus Young on his Gibson SG. Young’s incendiary tone has inspired wave after wave of rock guitar heroes, and turned on countless players to the power of his seminal guitar of choice, the SG. Now the Gibson USA Angus Young SG puts all the tone and playability of this classic double-cutaway into a signature model made to Young’s own specs. The result is an instrument with all the punch, crunch and sizzle that Angus achieves with his treasured SG, in a guitar that’s still well within reach of the workaday rocker.

Way back in 1961, the Gibson SG replaced the underappreciated Les Paul Standard, and while the Les Paul would surface later in the decade as a rock and blues classic, the new SG (originally named Les Paul/SG) was an instant hit in its own right. Its simple yet inspired ingredients of thin, all-mahogany body and neck and two Gibson humbucking pickups gave it a snappy attack with a muscular punch, while its slim, fast neck yielded unprecedented playability.

The Gibson USA Angus Young SG not only captures the look, feel and sound of a great SG, it also embodies some of the rare specs and qualities of Angus’s own ’68 model, known to be a stand-out example among a classic breed. Back, black and ready to rock, the Gibson USA Angus Young SG puts the full fury of that classic AC/DC tone in your hands.

As a signature model from Gibson USA that’s made to the artist’s own specifications, the Angus Young SG undoubtedly looks the part. Dressed in a high-gloss finish, the guitar carries Angus-certified “lightning bolt” inlays on its rosewood fingerboard, a signature-engraved truss-rod cover, and contrasting vintage-cream fingerboard binding and selector switch ring. The Angus Young SG’s distinctions don’t end with the visuals, though, and this model is built from the ground up to a short-lived set of specs that are rare in existing SGs today.

Light, ultra-resonant mahogany is selected for its dual-horned body, while the dimensions of the guitar’s solid-mahogany neck are extremely unusual. Matching the extra slim, narrow neck on Angus’s own ’68 SG Standard, the Angus Young SG carries a neck that’s just 0.775” thick at the 1st fret, and 0.850” thick at the 12th, with a nut width of 1.550”. These specs yield a neck that is superbly playable, equally suited to grinding power-chord rhythm work and speed-freak soloing. To squeeze every drop of tone from the instrument, Gibson USA loads it with the popular ’57 Classic humbucking pickup in the neck and an Angus Young Signature humbucker in the bridge for added punch and sizzle. Vintage-style tuners and a Corian nut grace the headstock, while down at the business end, the classic pairing of a tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece keep things rock solid.

Each guitar comes protected in a snug-fitting Gibson USA hardshell case, includes owner’s manual and adjustment literature.

Comments about Gibson Angus Young SG Signature Electric Guitar:

I own a 2011 with ebony board and really like it and could not find a single flaw for a while. The neck is so skinny that its hard to get used to but, its also very weak. I handled mine like a baby and for no apparent reason the headstock developed a crack.

I then read and discovered that this is a signature model not to be confused with a replica model which cost way too much. The difference is this neck angle is roughly 4.5 degrees and the replica is around 2.5, big difference. A bigger difference is the signatures neck is mahogany one piece and the replica is a three piece maple neck which is ideal for a neck that thin. The other differences which are no big deal are the saddles and the signature has plastic inlays.

Mine is getting repaired by a well known luthier that is going to reinforce the weak area like Gibson should have done in the first place.

Its a great guitar but a 61 reissue may have a stronger headstock or get the replica and handle it like Angus. Gibson was nice enough to confirm that most artist only sign off on the design of a signature model and most don't play the replica models. The lightning bolt inlay one Angus plays is a '68 to '71 SG that had the inlays put on later.

I would still buy one but when mine comes back after the repair I will be happy.

IF YOU BUY ONE, STORE IT IN THE CASE.

Comments about Gibson Angus Young SG Signature Electric Guitar:

This guitar plays amazingly smooth. I picked one up at the guitar center on sunset and was blown away. I've heard the neck on Angus' SG was thin, but this neck was surprisingly thin. It reminds me of the feel and shape of my Epiphone casino. Only sturdier. It was thin enough to make any player play chords like Hendrix, but solid enough to feel strong enough to last for years. The sound was just as amazing. I played it through a Marshall DSL 15 combo and it gave me all the classic rock tones I could dream of. Clean, Blues, Crunch, Hi gain and everything in between sounded great through this guitar. It's brighter than other SGs I've played and I love it. It can really cut through the mix. I will now sell my children to get my hands on one and I think you should too.
