All Kirk's favorite features in one affordable guitar.

The Kirk Douglas SG is as versatile as its namesake, primed to tap every tone you might need to rock out with today’s demanding music. Through some inventive Gibson USA switch trickery, this three-pickup SG Custom—with a trio of ’57 Classic humbuckers for legendary PAF tones—gives you single-coil sounds via its push-pull tone pots, and lets you dial in the middle pickup wherever desired thanks to the stealth blender ring disguised within its TogPot™ selector switch. A vibrola tailpiece further enhances this stunning guitar’s chops, and tips off the visual splendor that makes the Kirk Douglas SG such a sultry beast.

The high-gloss Vintage Cherry nitrocellulose finish is a classic yet lesser-seen variation of the SG Custom of the 1960s. It is beautifully set off by acrylic pearloid block markers, a wide SG Custom headstock with multi-ply binding and split-diamond inlay, and a double-wide white pickguard. The visual pièce de résistance, though, is the long gold “Lyre” tailpiece cover engraved with Kirk’s nickname—“Captain”—and dual roses, partnered by a Kirk Douglas signature decal on the back of the headstock. For classic yet original looks, versatile tones, and an unparalleled playing feel, the Kirk Douglas SG is ready to rock you sideways, whatever your musical requirements.

    Body and Neck
The Kirk Douglas SG is made from solid Grade-A mahogany in the iconic double-horned style of the original ’60s SG. Its thin dimensions and beveled edges are key ingredients in its legendary playing comfort, as is its slim, super-fast mahogany neck, with depths of 0.800” at the 1st fret and 0.900” at the 12th. Its Grade-A rosewood fingerboard carries stunning acrylic pearloid block markers, and is topped with a large Custom headstock with multi-ply binding and split-diamond inlay.

    Pickups and Electronics
Three of Gibson’s popular ’57 Classics provide a usefully contemporary take on vintage PAF humbucker tone, with added versatility thanks to coil-splitting switching on the tone controls’ push-pull pots. In addition, the TogPot™ selector switch carries a blender pot within its ring, to dial in the middle pickup level to any position, as desired. All this clever wiring trickery gives the Kirk Douglas SG unseen sonic depths, while hiding within the traditional four-knob plus three-way switch control array.

    Hardware
The hardware, all gold, includes high-quality Grover™ keystone tuners, tune-o-matic bridge, and a vibrola for added versatility, with stunning “Lyre” cover etched with Kirk’s nickname “Captain” and dual roses. The guitar carries the larger white mid-’60s pickguard, with multi-ply headstock binding, single-ply fingerboard binding, and a traditional “bell” truss-rod cover.

Comments about Gibson "Captain" Kirk Douglas, Roots SG:

Gibson's price on this model was unbelievably low, my 1961 reissue sells new for almost 3 times this price every where, and the only differences between this guitar and the SG Custom is a rosewood fret board and the larger "batwing" pickguard.

Mine was back ordered only two weeks before Gibson halted production and I wasn't sure I would get one, very happy when it arrived. The finish was perfect, PLEK setup always good, but there was a problem with the electronics as a horrible hum on the bridge and middle pickups. I pulled the back cover off and found a broken solder and a number of wires just hanging there. I could tell where they had broken off so I just heated up a soldering gun and soldered them back in. Can't send it back because they are out of production and I didn't want to take it to a service center because it takes 2 weeks for them to even look at it. I have bought 8 new Gibson's over the years and this was the first one that arrived with a problem, but the electrical work everywhere looked a bit sloppy, still love you guys but it was odd fixing my brand new Gibson on Christmas day.

If yours has a problem staying in tune just oil up the nut before you play every day for a few weeks and that will solve the problem. Every new Gibson I have ever owned except the 2008 Traditional Pro Plus has had this problem, and oiling the nut for a few weeks has always worked. Guitars with a tremolo arms are the worse because the strings must be able to slide across the nut in order for it to stay in tune. Oiling works instantly with only minor tuning adjustments needed over an hour's playing time.

Comments about Gibson "Captain" Kirk Douglas, Roots SG:

The 57 Classic pickups, combined with Coil Splitters and Middle Pickup settings, offer a lot of fantastic tone options.

I like the more Jazzy tones. This guitar delivers that plus everything the SG is known for.

Comments about Gibson "Captain" Kirk Douglas, Roots SG:

I used to have a 1972 Walnut colored SG Custom as a back-up to my 1976 Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Custom when I played out in the late 1970's and into the 1980's. The SG was my back-up guitar because I really didn't care for the middle pick-up in oh! so many ways. I took a chance on this guitar because I love the SG Custom look but didn't feel that I would be comfortable spending the kind of money they want for a more traditional SG Custom ,as per my previous experience with that model guitar. So !!! What I like about this guitar over the more traditional SG Custom is that the middle pick-up isn't out of phase with the other pick-ups and that you can have a two pick-up sound with this guitar because the tog-pot switch allows you to blend the middle pick-up to any pick-up combination. Another feature of this guitar that I prefer is the large pickguard , which allows you to mount the pick-ups on this guitar without having to use the pick-up trim rings. I feel that this feature makes it easier to deal with the middle pick-up while playing the guitar.
