A semi-hollowbody that performs like a solidbody.
The Gibson Custom Shop CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar was created by Gibson's Custom, Art, & Historic Division. It's a "tonally carved" guitar with a solid mahogany carved back-and-sides unit, a carved, bookmatched, figured maple top, and a center block that is an integral part of the top and back. The shape is a scaled-down version of the Gibson ES-335, offering the player more comfort from this highly refined version of the classic. Includes hardshell case.

When I first heard about this model I didn't "get it". The coverage at the time didn't make it clear what this guitar was all about. The ES-339 got my attention, but I found that the ES-339 and CS-336 are very similar but the ES-339 is made using laminates and the CS-336 is carved from solid wood (hence the price difference). My local store had a CS-336 in stock so I thought I would try it out. I couldn't put it down! I HAD TO BUY IT! This guitar has SO much soul and character. It has the "play-ability" of a Les Paul, but weighs less and with the semi-hollow body starts to really breathe when played a bit louder.This guitar does and excellent job on electric Blues, Southern Rock, Jazz, Hard Rock (even Kiss),and has the perfect character for the early Cream stuff (at least through an Orange Amp).Oh well, there goes yet another tax refund!

After owning many quality guitars, this is the best It fits my fairly short hands. Great tone and a light, user friendly shape that is a joy to play. Poor fitting toggle switch and unimpressive tuners for the price. Had to sell a PRS and tele deluxe to pay for it(even though it was a scratch and dent) with no regrets. The carved top gives it unique woody sweet tonal quality. It rings out louder acoustically louder than larger 335 type guitars, has a great playing LP type neck, and a balanced tone.
Best semi-hollw guitar I have encountered.
Best Gibson I have played other than a 60's L5.
Beautiful carved figured Maple top. Hardware so so, nice pups.
High priced for me! I think most Gibson are over priced, but that has not stopped me from owning a few thanks to MF used and S&D sales.

The CS-336 is a Les Paul without the weight. A 339 without the size. It fits in my hand and hangs on my body in just the right way. It is sophisticated and respectable but is also comfortable rockin' on. Great instrument.

This is my forth Gibson, fourteenth guitar overall. The quality in this instrument is amazing. I've toured the Gibson factory in Memphis, so I've seen the quality that goes into these first hand. I was skeptical that this guitar wouldn't have much of a hollowbody sound but it does. The sensitivity and response of the pickups is amazing also.

I have played for famous personalities as well as small clubs and fairs. There is no guitar that can do everything as well as the 336. If i could have only have one guitar.....guess which one I would choose!

Through the many years of my existence, I believe I have gone through just about every conceivable mid-high end guitar. This one is king! I plugged it into my Marshall Vintage Modern and I'm sure it took the angels' breath away!Sell some or all of the others you may have and get this... it truly brings out the voice of your soul... Its rare that I write reviews on instruments because, like many of you, I trade 'em out too fast to ever really appreciate them. But this 336 will stay with me FOREVER - guaranteed! While I agree with some of the other reviewers regarding the plastic nut (c'mon, put bone in there Gibson!), everything else about this guitar is absolutely stunning. I owned a 335 and sold it shortly after this guitar arrived at my door. The 336 has its own sound - sort of a mix between a Les Paul and a 335. Woody, but capable of flat out rippin' it up when necessary or mellowing out if need be. I can't believe I haven't seen more of these in player's hands, but maybe the price is holding people back a bit. Got mine as a scratch 'n dent, so it was a reasonable price for a guitar with perfect action, intonation, beauty and grace. If you've been looking for a 335 style guitar without the size, look no further. Gibson got it right with this one as far as I'm concerned. My search is over!

The pegs are a lil' short, so restringing takes a second longer. The action is fantastic. Like the SG getting to the 22nd fret is easy. Unlike the SG it's a beautiful ax. You can tell with my guitar that it's not production. It has flee's.

This is an awesome guitar.....great rockabilly, blues, and jazz. Also great for bright rock power chords and effects. The workmanship is outstanding and the look is timeless. A classic.

This guitar is amazing you can play any style and it will sound great. The colors of the guitars are unbelievable, I own a tangerine burst. I know the guitar is very pricy but it's defiantely worth it. Go get one.
