Good as I will get in my lifetime compared to an original LP Standard made in 1959...an heirloom instrument as much as my hand-made violin. I have played and owned multiple Les Pauls, and this has the feel of old ones I've enjoyed playing, and has the magic I've looked for in almost 30 years of picking up, playing, and putting guitars back on their hangers. Truly, in my opinion, the best work out of Gibson, true to the "Vintage Original Spec" concept.
You get what you expect - the original configuration. It would be nice to get coil taps, but purists might consider that even the double-coil setting would be compromised.
As far as I'm concerned (sorry, MF), I would never buy a guitar like this without trying it out first, and here's why: in a room full of reissues (no other R9's, but some very good-looking R8's and R0's), this was the best guitar in the room. For what you pay, it had better be. The one I bought had *no* issues from my point of view, save a slightly "tight" G-string nut (better tight than loose).
8 out of 10. You get what you pay for, the tone and feel you expect, and the best any other builder gets is close, "inspired by" or something other than the real thing. If you have the money, you'll buy what you can afford. If you don't, you'll rationalize getting what you get. This is what I got because I'll probably never touch or play an original '59 standard, much less buy one. As a friend who has played originals told me - "you are in the ballpark - not in the outfield, either - maybe second base." I've played other old Gibsons, and I believe this.

I bought the 59' Custom LP (Washed Cherry) in 2005. This was made before the VOS guitars came out. Boy this guitar is GREAT!! It's quality is second to none, the sound has that vintage sound, and I have played an original 59'. This guitar stands right up there with an original. Gibson is putting out the best Les Pauls it has ever done in the past. There quality is top notch. The setup on this guitar was very comfortable and the playability was amazing. Granted the price is kind of high, but you'll have a piece of history in the making. This guitar will eventually be worth alot more than what you will have paid for it. This guitar will truly be a collector's piece one day in the not too distant future. I also have other Gibson Les Pauls, a Custom Shop 57' Reissue, Standard Plus Top Les Paul, and Studio Les Paul, but my 59' Reissue tops them all!

Doesn't hardly mean quality anymore. Its been a feeling of mine that Gibson has been cutting corners and inflating prices lately due to it's highly identifiable name. When I got this home it drove me to confirming my beliefs. The binding on the neck looks like the rookie of the shop's first attempt at ever doing a binding job. It jagged along the fretboard and hardly fit for a guitar at this price. The saddles are burred on the top E and B strings and are off center on quite a few of them. My advice is if you're going to drop this amount of money on a single cut, double hum guitar, drop it on some smaller company that is more concerned with building quality rather than quantity. ESP Eclipses, Washburn Pilsens, and ESPECIALLY the Hamer USA stuff will be twice the quality for almost half the price of this overrated hunk of wood. I've owned each one of those, and I have no idea why I bought this one.

I don't care who you are or what you think you know, this is the 12 Gauge Shotgun of Electric Guitars. If your crappy it will make you sound good. If your good it will make you sound great. If your great you can just pick it up and it will start playing itself. I got my first one in 1974. I was 23. It was a Black Beauty. I sat it on a chair with my with my wife and we stared at it for 45 minutes. I still have it, and 8 others....Dennis

Well, It's a gibson. The new chambered les paul standards arn't. The only way to get a real Gibson is a reissue, and the 59 is my favorite because of the flame top jumbo frets and the fact jimmy page used one.The 58 is a nice guitar too, but it dosn't look or play as nice. Like the other guy said "this is the best guitar on the market" this is very true. Plug this this thing into a Marhall (or a good Fender) and put every thing on 10 (or 11 in some cases....) and use a power brake, no don't use a power brake use a hot plate or a gibson power stealth because all of them take away treble but the hotplate and the stealth have a bright switch..... Anyway this guitar is great im saving up my birthday money for it (hahahaha).The only things i would change are the pot the push/pull 500ks for coil taping,out phase,series/parelel and add some grover (although the ons that come with it are just fineand thats about it. I hope you enjoyed my realy long review (it's not that long is it)?

Given gibson's current practice of drilling weight relief holes into their Les Pauls (including the 'historics,' as well as a serious lapse in quality in recent years I cannot recommend this guitar to anyone other than collectors looking for an instrument to place on display. For a performing musician compared to a Tokai LP or even a Greco or an old lawsuit Ibanez, this guitar is a major dissapointment.

This is one of the greatest well made guitars in the world. As the other guy said this is the exact guitar Jimmy Page bought from Joe Walsh in the 60's I believe. It has a great sound with a state of the art body. If you have the money don't hesitate to buy it because you won't regret it.

My guitar buzzes too much in my opinion when I get the action down where I think a Les Pauls should be. The neck is sticky, I'm hoping that it gets smoother with time. Looks like Billy Gibbon's guitar without the toggle switch plate, so that's extremely cool. -Curt

This guitar is the best guitar that I had ever owned. I had owned a Gibson ES-335, Yamaha electric SG500 and a 1968 Gibson Les paul reissue over a 32 year span period. This guitar may appear pricey, but it is well worth the great action, tone and sophistication. This guitar would want to make you pratice longer, because the action, tone and good looks encourages you to perfect your chops, licks and riffs. I had realize now that buy the best and you will eventually be the best. The cheaper guitars are affordable, but could hinder your growth where the action and tone would turn you off. If you could afford this gem, go for it.
