The only reason I bought this guitar was so my 8year-old could have an okay, reasonably priced guitar to learn power chords on. It works just as I thought it would- PERFECT for beginners. My son loves it, and he is hoping for another for his Flag Day gift!
I agree that this is a very fine starter guitar for younger children. But, for a guitarist of a decent skill level they would need a much better quality. I've used it personally at a close friend of mine's house, and i really didn't catch on to it. It is not worth the price for the fact that it is very bulky and just not pleasing to the eyes. The only good thing I can say about it is that my 7 year old son just loves playing "Rock Star" with it.
I bought this guitar without looking at the picture very closely, and was dismayed to discover upon its arrival that it only has one pickup. Maybe it's my mistake, but I had assumed that for the price, it would have at least had four or five pickups and maybe a dozen knobs. For that, I give it a 0.5 on value (would give a 0 if I could). However, the pickguard is one of the most astounding examples of craftsmanship I have ever seen - so much so that it alone clinches a 5.0 on quality. Overall, I give the guitar a 2.0 - it simply needs more pickups. Gibson, are you listening?
I first bought this guitar as a good all-around beginner for my 12 year old daughter. Quality was decent, but adequate for a beginner. Because of the reasonable price, I ended up purchasing one of these for all her school friends as well. When my daughter requests a new model, I send her old ones to my son, who is in a hardcore screamo band. He appreciates the lower than average build quality, making the unit easy to smash/light on fire at the end of his shows. Overall, I'd recommend this guitar for someone starting out or maybe young children.
