Comments about Gibson ES-139 Electric Guitar:

I find the simplistic electronics one of the best things on this guitar. I honestly (and I'm sure many of you) rarely, if ever, mess around that much with with all the controls featured on most LP's or ES models. So, if you can live without the extras... This guitar really seems like it should be priced along with most of the other ES model, many of which are much higher.

Comparing it to a Les Paul, I find it to be both more comfortable to play (weighing less) and more "musical" for lack of a better term. It maintains a clarity even at full on distortion that I've found to be superior to that of a Les Paul. A tone choice to be sure, but more versatile in my opinion.

My other buying point is that it is unique, I had no no idea this model even existed before seeing it here. I wanted a classic looking guitar that not everyone has and this fits the bill.

It's a beautiful instrument at a good price, capable of rocking out or producing amazing clean sounds. Great Guitar!

Comments about Gibson ES-139 Electric Guitar:

I've been a Strat guy the past 25 years. I've experimented with other guitars, but always came back to the Strat for its versatility (mine all have humbuckers in the bridge). While I've always appreciated Gibsons and owned a few, I could never bond with them for one reason or another.

The ES-139 is a real sleeper. I couldn't even find it on the Gibson website. But on paper, it looked like everything I wanted over the years when I tried Gibsons: a thin hollowbody with a centerblock, streamlined controls (I hate having four knobs) and versatile tones.

I LOVE this guitar. First of all, I love the look. It's like an oversized Les Paul. Smaller and thinner than a Gretsch though, which for me is good. Like I said, I love the simple controls. I've read some complaints about where the pickup selector is, and while I'm sure it was a cost-saving measure, I like it. When I play Les Pauls, I always end up hitting the pickup selector with my right hand.

It's nice and light, and unplugged it has a nice airy tone. I got the ebony, which looks classy with the dual white binding. Fit and finish were excellent. Intonation was great out of the box, and no buzzing even with a low action.

Plugged in, this guitar sounds like a fat Les Paul. It has a touch less low end, which I think is good. In my experience Les Pauls can sound a little muddy and boomy, especially on the cleans. This guitar really bridges the gap between Les Paul and Strat. The dirty tones are expectedly top-notch, but I was really surprised by the clean tones. They just sound FAT. Even the bridge position sounds great clean. They kind of make my favorite Strat clean tones sound wimpy and anemic by comparison.

Overall, I think this guitar is superb. It's certainly no frills, but I don't care. I love how it sounds and how it plays.

The only negative is that is comes with a gig bag and not a hardshell case. I will say that it's a much nicer, more padded and fitted gig bag than Gibson usually provides. But still, a hard case would be nice. I don't mind throwing my Strats in the back of the car in a gig bag, but Gibsons are a lot more fragile. Gibson doesn't even offer a case for this guitar! However, their ES-339 case will work, as will the Epiphone ES-339 case (fits PERFECTLY) and it's under a hundred bones.

I'm not sure why this guitar isn't more popular. At the price point, it's a great American made Gibson. And price aside, it looks, sounds and plays amazing.
