Comments about Gibson ES-335 Studio Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Kinda disappointed in Gibson's QC department by dropping the ball on what could be a real home run of a guitar. Unfortunately the two that I received and sent back weren't up to the quality that the Memphis shop should be putting out. Both guitars had tuning issues with a ton of pinging on all the strings. What happend to the PLEK machine? The sanding on the bass side of the neck was rough all the way up the neck, pooling nitro by the neck pocket, and to top it off the 3-way switch was cutting in & out. Back it went! The second one faired better with a nicer sanded neck and no pooling nitro but still had pinging strings at the nut and a bad volume pot. Back it went. Come on Gibson, if this gets by your QC then you need to wake up! Just for the record when it stayed in tune (not very long) there were some nice tones in there to be had, albeit on the hotter side. These pickups sound nice for hard rock and a smoking lead tone but not the greatest clean tone. Breaks up a fairly clean sound very fast and having only one tone & volume pot limits the range of tones you could have gotten with the additional tone/vol pot. The frets are also thinner & higher than the usual Gibson flat/wide frets. Maybe the QC will get their act together or it was just a fluke to get two bad ones, but I decided to get a really nice Guild Starfire V for less & I'm totally blown away by the quality & craftsmanship that (Fender) Korea is putting out. Sorry USA, I wanted buy US but not when they let those get by! Check out the Guild,
it has a great tone, plays effortlessly , and stays in tune even with a Bibsby!

Comments about Gibson ES-335 Studio Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I received my Memphis ES 335 on 9 June 2014, it came in a standard tan/brown Gibson case with a build certificate; there is no case candy. The case is well built with a fair amount of padding and should adequately protect the guitar from normal handling and storage incidents. The guitar came with 9-42 standard Gibson strings and had been detuned approximately 2 to 3 steps, assumedly for shipping. After tuning the guitar to standard 440 pitch and letting it stabilize for a day, then re-tuned it to 440 pitch. The action of the guitar was just a little higher than I prefer, but still easy to play and the frets were smooth and well finished. The first problem I encountered was the pick-up selector switch, which is noisy (scratchy) thru all three positions. The tone pot did not work, however the single volume pot functioned normally. The sound of the guitar is more closely akin to a Les Paul than 335's I've played in the past, I assume that the reduction of electronics, the missing volume and tone pots, which diminish the tweakabiity somewhat. The overall sound of the Memphis 335 is pleasing and full, it's definitely sounds Gibson, and the Pickups on this model have that Gibson sound. The vintage sunburst finish is very pleasing to look at; the overall construction is very nice and the slim body and design make it comfortable to play sitting or standing. I returned the guitar to Musiciansfriend, who readily offered to exchange for another one… as a musician you just can't beat their service and dedication.

Comments about Gibson ES-335 Studio Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

At first I was very hesitant because of the iconic sound of the 335. I also was concerned it might really be a "dumbed down" version of the real McCoy.
I own several 335 "clones" by various companies, and they are all great guitars in their own way. But none of them really sound like a 335, including a "souped up" Epiphone Dot with Seymour Duncan pickups I have.
I've owned a couple of 335s in the past. Always loved the sound, but they were waaaaay too body heavy, resulting in a few missed chords while playing solo jazz gigs and trying to catch the guitar from falling off my lap.
I also assumed this was going to sound like a Gibson Midtown, of which I own two. They are fine guitars, but they don't sound like a 335. I assumed if it didn't meet my expectations I would send it back.
Much to my surprise, the vibe is there, along with the sound! At this price point I wasn't expecting to get this much 335 vibe. The neck is heavenly and a cut above what's on the Midtowns, and the sound is exactly what I wanted. It didn't have the dreaded body heaviness of my previous 335s, and it was at a reasonable price as well.
Mine also was extremely resonant unplugged, which is always a good sign. The cons are this - I think Gibson cheaped out on the bridge, which looks to me like an Epiphone bridge rather than a true Gibson Tune-o-matic. It also has that goopy lacquer you see on Chinese-made Epiphones, which is kind of a turn off. No doubt the heavy lacquer was cheaper, but it looks unbecoming on a Gibson. I would have preferred just a light satin finish to this. Other than that, it's a solid guitar and a cheaper alternative to an iconic guitar that is becoming unaffordable to purchase for most people, including myself. The F holes are cut well - no sloppiness - and the Grover tuners seem to hold pretty well, even on the G and B strings, as Gibson lovers know often have problems.
All in all, I'm delighted and would recommend this to anyone looking for a real 335 vibe at a price you don't have to be a hedge fund manager to own.
