OVERVIEW

Compact in size, big on tone.

Through the course of more than five decades and myriad shifting musical styles, the ES-335 has remained one of the most popular electric guitars of all time. Its ingenious blend of hollowbody warmth and complexity and solidbody bite and sustain made it arguably the most versatile guitar available when Gibson introduced the model in 1958, and that design imperative hasn't changed today.

For some players more accustomed to the slimmer lines and more compact dimensions of a solidbody electric, though, the standard ES-335 can feel just a little large and unwieldy. Enter Gibson Memphis's ES-339, a guitar built to the design ethos of its predecessor the ES-335, but fashioned to proportions closer to those of the legendary Gibson solidbodies such as the Les Paul and SG. The gently arched top with real f-holes, thinline semi-hollow body, solid maple center block to reduce feedback and enhance sustain, rounded symmetrical cutaways with unparalleled upper-fret access-all here, minus a little of the bulk and weight. Comes with case.

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I bought my Gibson ES-339 online from musician's friend. i was scared to buy an expensive guitar without trying it first, but i figured if i didnt like it, i'd send it back. there was no need to worry.

this instrument FAR surpassed my expectations. i still love my ES-335, but this guitar is its own species. i love this guitar. the tone is killer, full, rich, and very versatile. i play all kinds of music on it, and the sound is organic, deep, AND sparkling all at once. the playability is fantastic, easy action, and the light weight is a real plus on those 3-4 hour gigs.

i highly recommend the es-339, and i'm glad i bought it from musician's fiend.

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I looked at the ES-339 at various stores since its inception wishing that I could afford one. When MF had it 15% off I finally took the plunge for my birthday this year. I read hundreds of reviews, so I knew going in that quality control was an issue from the very beginning with this model. First, the good; the Vintage Red finish on mine is as near-perfect as a guitar finish can be in this price range, the pickups sound like angels singing or demons growling depending on your preference, the case is remarkably sturdy and attractive, the intonation was perfect. The not-so-good; the tuners are not very high quality and will be changed to some sort of locking tuner, the bridge is just "ok" and will be upgraded at some point in the future, and the action was set way too high. I tried to play the 339 for a week or so and could not manage it with the action that had been set at the factory. I had my guitar tech take a look at it. He shook his head and asked if I could still return it. Yes, it was that bad. I asked him to see if he could get it to play properly so he worked his voodoo and did a complete set-up on it. The beast now has some very fine mojo going. I would recommend the ES-339 to a friend with the caveat to expect to spend extra to have it set up properly.

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Without doubt this is one of the sweetest guitars I have ever played. Right out of the box I knew immediately that I had found a real gem. Perfect setup,[I changed from 10's to 9's without touching anything], perfect intonation, perfect finish. The craftsmanship on this guitar is superb...I have a [Gibson] '58 Les Paul re-issue that I bought 10 years ago, and the finish, setup, and quality control was less than acceptable, but I loved the feel of the guitar so much I couldn't bear to send it back. I was concerned about the slim taper neck not being comfortable, being used to the '58 neck, but what a surprise! The 339 is so perfectly balanced and in proportion, that I didn't even notice the difference in neck profiles! Amazing! I will NEVER willingly part with this guitar...

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Bough the Es339 in February 2014 from Musician's Friend.
I used to own a 335 years ago, but it felt and looked awkwardly on a relatively short and thin guy like myself.
The 339 body size and weight are a Godsend.
The finish (vintage cherry) is beautiful, although the back of the neck seems to absorb finger oil - not a huge problem, you just have to wipe it down.
The pickups sound excellent, but maybe could have been better with a slightly higher output.
The guitar is somewhat expensive, but I think you do get what you pay for here.
It arrived from MF perfectly set up, and hasn't needed adjustment yet.
Came in a beautiful and classy case, so nice that I put in a different beat up case that fit - I play 8-10 gigs per month and the cases tend to get somewhat beat up on the floor of the back seat floor in my car.
All in all I love this guitar !
