I purchased this guitar about a year ago. The reason I chose this guitar was because of Brendon Small. If an Explorer was good enough for him it's definately good enough for me. I picked an Explorer up at [@], as well as a more expensive Les Paul, and loved the Explorer right off the bat. Many complain about this guitar, saying it's hard to play sitting down, but the switch from a Schecter C1 Standard+ to the Explorer was seamless. There will be some times when the guitar is unbalanced when on your lap, but this only lasts a few weeks at most, as I find this guitar quite comfortable to play sitting down. PLaying mostly metal, I love this guitar. I can execute tremelo picking seamlessly, play chords easily, sweep seamlessly and play legato without a problem. I haven't messed with anything on this guitar except two Gibson humbucker covers. I figured the investment would protect my pickups and maintain Gibson authenticity. The covers add alot of class to this instrument, don't alter the sound and look fantastic. Gibson's tend to be on the expensive side, but Musician's Friend has very affordable prices, the upgrade to a Gibson has been priceless. I bought my Explorer in black, and would buy a second in white without hesitation (if I had the money, of course). Very playable guitar, very beautiful guitar, very metal guitar. There are just a few cons. I have just noticed a spot on the headstock where the finish is missing, as if someone took a knife and scraped it. This is hardly noticeable, and may have been my own doing, but it makes me sad nonetheless. The fiish also scrathes easily; again, this is hardly noticeable, but under the right lighting you can see some small scratches. I have babied this guitar, and I have no idea how this could have gotten here, as the only thing that might have done that is my cleaning cloth. But these are very minor, and I wouldn't let that deter you. Many complain about Gibson's quality control, but I haven't found any major issues and I have experienced Gibson to be a very trustworthy brand. Love this guitar, love Gibson. Buy it!

I previously owned a Les Paul studio a few years back but had to sell it to pay bills. When I was able to afford a new Gibson I thought I'd give the Explorer a try. I'd always liked the body style so I thought why not? The only good thing about this guitar was the case. I don't know what Gibson makes their pickguards out of but they create so much static electricity thats about all you can hear when you play. The finish was nonexistant in a few places and they forgot to pack the intonation. The bridge saddles wouldn't move far enough to fix it. I dont't know if this is Gibsons idea of quality control or I just got a cruddy guitar but it's certainly not nearly as good as my Carvin.

    Gibson Explorer Heritage Cherry

    By Jack Childs

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

As an owner of 18, vintage, and, late model Gibsons, I am very glad to report that, this is the first Gibson guitar, that I have ever purchased, from anyone, that did not have to be totally,"set up", after I recieved it. I put my GHS boomers on it, and played the whole, New Years weekend, with this guitar. This this not only sounds phenominal, but also, plays as well, as any Gibson I have ever gotten, including, my plek dressed, Les Paul, gold top. This guitar,is absolutely, the best, Gibson, value, that I have ever gotten, over the past 40 years! Definately, a, smoker!!!!!

    Best Buy for Any Musician

    By job1jt

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

I purchased my Explorer in the summer of '08 and never looked back. After years of playing with cheap guitars and basses, it only made sense to step up to the plate and deliver the home run by making this purchase. I'm a big Metallica and Judas Priest fan (especially the early stuff) and this guitar delivers the punch any rock, metal, or even blues type player. Excellent buy, worth every penny.

questioning all the five star reviews

    By Hella V

    About Me Professional Musician

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

I think many of the five star reviews for this guitar are just people excited to have a new Gibson. This guitar is substandard in many ways. If you want it to stay in tune, you'll need a new nut and locking tuners right away. If you want to bend strings without breaking them, you'll need to replace the '50s technology fulcrum bridge with something better. If you don't want to drop the thing on stage, you'll need strap locks. And if you want any kind of decent sound, you'll need to replace the stock weak pickups (which is what everyone does). Not bashing the guitar, just stating facts. Gibson is cheap as all get-out when it comes to the above.

    This guitar rocks!!!

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

I would give it a 10 but when I got it, the intonation was drastically off and it kept going out of tune so I adjusted the intonation and put some graphite on the nut which seemed to help a lot. This is a great solid rock guitar. I got the white which is really more of a classic white color and I really like it. When you buy a Gibson, you are getting top end USA woods and hardware. This guitar plays and sounds great. The neck is a little bigger than a 1960 LP neck, but its comfortable and fast. I never played an Explorer before and I was surprised how well balanced the guitar was given the shape. The pickups are very hot and great for rock or metal. They have a very beefy sound and you can get some great pinched harmonics out of the bridge pickup, but its not shrill like some pickups. The bridge pickup is a lot louder than the neck but its not an issue for me. The neck pickup sounds great for clean strumming or for smooth leads. The frets are well dressed with no sharp edges. All around just a great playing super cool looking guitar.
Basic LP set up, mahogany body, rosewood fretboard. Hot humbuckers. You know what you're getting with this guitar so I give it a 10 because the parts are all high end USA Gibson parts.
The construction and the paint job are both pretty much flawless.
This is a well made USA Gibson and is worth the money because there is no need for upgrades etc. Epiphone is a good value, but they are NOT the same guitar, just made overseas (woods, hardware etc)

I have mine set aside and will pick it up in a month and write a deeper review. Mine is a special natural finish with gold hardware. plays great and sounds PHAT! love it! i actually love the stock pickups. i think they add that rocker tone. Comes in a slick black case with white interior, its freakin bad! lol a great buy! get one. Not to mention Coheed and Cambria is my favorite band and Claudio plays these almost religiously. sweet tones !

    Amazing

    By Lauren

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

This is the most beautiful guitar. The pictures of the heritage cherry don't do it any justice. It's absolutely beautiful. The action is so fast on this neck, it's unreal. It is surprisingly light, and well balanced. The only thing that I would change would be the huge, heavy case that comes with the explorer. I love this axe.

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

Don't let the price tag fool you; your really getting what you pay for. I played an ebony one through a Marshall stack (don't remember the specific model), and it's just crazy. It's got some of the heaviest sounds I've heard, and it's perfect for metal. Seriously, people on here aren't lying when they say it's lighter than a Les Paul. It doesn't seem possible, but it's true. If you're fortunate enough to have the money, get this or a Flying V. You'll be blown away...

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a quality made Gibson, to its very finest. I think it is a great guitar. Although, if you do not enough money to back up the cost, I would suggest going with the Epiphone, for much less. Basically, this guitar is great shredding, and I love the neck for supreme bends. Although the neck is a bit wide, it is a good guitar.

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

I just got my 76 Explorer in Cherry finish. I have been playing it for over a week now, trying to break it in, and work any bugs out of it. The problem is, is that I found none. It played great right out of the case. I had to tune it up a little, but other then that, it was set up good, and plays great. The pickups are really great in this guitar. I play alot of classic rock, like old VH, and I can get a great tone, really beefy, very distinct. The Gibson Explorer is a great guitar. Dont let the wild shape fool you. Its very comfortable to play in all positions. Get one....

    WOW!

    By AC-G9pnP

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

I just recieved this guitar as a christmas present, and the second I plugged in, I knew I was in heaven. The bridge pickup is the crunchiest thing I have ever encountered, and the neck pickup is so thick it makes me want to cry. The only complaint I have is that the guitar is way too big. I'm a pretty skinny person and the guitar protrudes an obscence amount away from my body, so it isn't too practical for shows, but in the studio its my main go to guitar. All in all, I recommend this for anyone who is looking for a guitar with a little more bite to it.

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

I played an Explorer at a music store once and fell in love with it. It is one of the sweetest electrics I've ever played. The neck is very fast and the pickups sound amazing. It is akward to play sitting down, but feels quite comfortable standing up. The weight is surprisingly well balanced despite its odd shape. I would definitely consider an Explorer for my next guitar. I just wish Gibson still made the Gothic version.

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

I have the 25th anniversary re-issue with a clear coat over the mahongany and a white pick guard. The action was incredibly high and the neck was out when I received it. Once it was adjusted and set up properly, it played very nice. I liked the stock pick-ups however they were lacking a little. I put in a set of Emg's and it sounded better for speed metal which is what I play yet it was more versatile with the original pick-ups in it. It has a very nice tone and is great for heavy music. I have many guitars and I really enjoy it. I would have a better review if it were set up good from the factory. In my honest opinion, I am not as impressed with Gibson's quality as I thought I would be. I wouldn't buy another Gibson product yet am happy with this guitar simply for its unique body and menacing tone.

    Pure Aggression

    By CKELLNER

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

From the moment I picked this guitar up, I knew it was the guitar for me. The rounded neck profile is deadly, and the pickups are fabulous. The way the guitar sits when your strapped up is so well balanced, that you can head bang without even touching the guitar and it will stay put. I have been playing for 9 years, and Im only 17, but Ive played many guitars in 9 years, and all I know is that Gibson is the way to go, It is an all around great guitar.

    A Great Guitar

    By JoeSatrianiMidnight

    from NY

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

Most of the other reviews say this guitar is great for metal, but this guitar is great for anything! I played the cherry version, the neck was messed up and the strings were a mile above the frets. There was another version but White and it was FANTASTIC! I think it was a rare mistake that messed up the cherry though. But the classic white had a prefect tone and sounds even better in a good VOX amp. This guitar is worth the money, the Body looks and feels great. It fits perfect on your leg, and the tale makes your arm be in the perfect position to play anything you want. You know if you get a gibson you'll be happy.

i love this guitar. ive had it for about six months now, and have nothing negative to say about it. it screams. great pickups, very fast action, and stays in tune for days. it only has 3 nobs so its somewhat limited in sound compared to other gibson, but its still great all around. sounds great clean. well worth it.

Comments about Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar:

I too received mine from Gibson with a horrible bridge set up. The strings were nearly an inch away from the body at the bridge and the strings were ridiculously high off the neck. After some self made adjustments, I got the strings to a decent height and and tuned the guitar to pitch. This guitar plays wonderfully and is easy on the fingers. You can facilitate any move you wish on its lightning-fast neck and its tone is warm and fat. I love this axe. Gibson should pay more attention to what goes on at the factory in regards to the guitar's initial set-up. Other than that small problem with my Explorer, I have nothing but praise for this instrument. It plays every bit as well as my Jackson SL-1 Soloist, the other guitar I own. I highly recommend this rockin' guitar!
