Gibson

Radical sharp design and excellent playing balance.

The body of the Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar is solid mahogany for a fat and punchy sound, while the 496R Hot Ceramic and 500T Super Ceramic humbuckers sizzle and snarl with aggressive authority. The Explorer's radical design not only looks sharp, but it also offers excellent playing balance. Other features include a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot inlay, Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece, and Grover machine heads. Made in the USA. Includes Gibson hardshell case. ---

Gibson Explorer "cherry" DO IT!!

Features:

I've played guitars before where the volume and tone knobs don't seem to have much impact on the sound being produced. But the combination of the pickups and control knobs make for a guitar that rewards tinkering and reflect the way in which you play the instrument.

I wanted this guitar because i simply loved the unique look and the players/era that it comes from but i BOUGHT this guitar because i couldn't go past that amazing cherry colour. It is sublime. I don't even have to be playing to appreciate this guitar and leave a smile on the dial. It's well weighted even though it has a strange shape and though i'm yet to try i think it would be most comfortable played standing.

The neck was a little wider than i thought it would be but still very comfortable and easy to work with especially with the fast fret board.

Quality:

Solid construction without being to heavy and looks like it will out last me. The chrome is beautiful and the tuning pegs precise. Nothing feels like it's going to slip or spin or do anything untoward. Again that colour....

Value:

For an instrument of this ability and quality with the Gibson name on it... i feel like i stole it for the price i got it at. Deciding wether to get new or second hand?  i bought mine second hand and it was imaculate, it still had all the plastic covers on the pick guard and rear plate. saved more money. You can trust the descriptions and ratings given by Musician Friend

Overall:

This is only my second guitar and i felt i took an educated risk because i bought it without ever playing or seeing one in real life. Everything you read about the Gibson Explorer is true - you just can't go wrong. The sounds is alive and it feels like it wants to work with you in your hands. For me the bridge pickup is a little harsh and the neck pickup a little muddy although that could be my amp settings (Orange DT /w Marshal 2x12 2061x). IMO the sweet spot (regarding high gain) is both pickups selected with the neck volume turned down to 7 and the tone cut to 8 - beautiful. I already had a set of JH EMG pickups waiting for the guitar to arrive so they go in next week and hopefully they take my tone to where i want for this guitar.

Most people will think this guitar is just for rock/metal but it really is very versitile and reacts well to how you play it.

If you buy one you won't regret it. Just don't chip the corners like every single muppet seems to do!!! happy playing.

As an owner of 18, vintage, and, late model Gibsons, I am very glad to report that, this is the first Gibson guitar, that I have ever purchased, from anyone, that did not have to be totally,"set up", after I recieved it. I put my GHS boomers on it, and played the whole, New Years weekend, with this guitar. This this not only sounds phenominal, but also, plays as well, as any Gibson I have ever gotten, including, my plek dressed, Les Paul, gold top. This guitar,is absolutely, the best, Gibson, value, that I have ever gotten, over the past 40 years! Definately, a, smoker!!!!!

I tried this guitar at my local music store and all I can say is WOW! This guitar is as great as I had hoped. Many people say this guitar is awesome at playing metal, and it is, but it also plays great classic rock and blues-rock like ZZ-Top and can play the sparkling cleans seen in U2's music. Another complain of many reviewers is that it is difficult to play sitting down, but I found it easy to play. Further more, the neck is thin and easy to play, the fret board (both the rosewood on the Cherry or Black finishes and the ebony on the white) feels smooth and looks great. I am used to an Epiphone SG 310, so the Explorer felt a little heavy, about the same weight as a Les Paul. Before I played this guitar I only wanted a Fender. When I have the money, I'm getting this guitar!

Simply Amazing

You can't go wrong with Gibson guitars and the Explorer is the top of the line.     While still holding the features of SG's or LP's the Explorer doesn't hold the odd shape of SG's or the weight of LP's.     This guitar is absolutely amazing.     If you're willing to spend the money on a Gibson pick up the Explorer.

The Gibson Explorer has the standard setup of two humbuckers and a volume/volume/tone control.     That's nothing too special to most, but I really like the volume/volume/tone control.     You get amazing tones out of the Explorer by combining the two pickups, giving you options that guitars without this feature can't create.     The neck on the Explorers are perfect to me.     I personally can't stand the super-thin Strat necks and I prefer the larger Tele-style necks and the Explorer is the perfect fit between the two.     I have a much greater range on the Explorer, but I am still able to keep my precision.     One other interesting feature is that this guitar is amazingly balanced and light.     The larger body is actually quite thin and it holds perfectly balanced at all times, plus it's extremely light.

This is an absolutely gorgeous and amazing guitar.     I have the white one and it's honestly the prettiest guitar I've ever seen.     Aside from its gorgeous looks the Explorer plays perfectly and sounds absolutely wonderful.

Typical Gibson quality with a typical Gibson price.     Explorers are amazing guitars, but be prepared to spend a pretty penny on them.     Definitely worth the price.

Just got the Heritage Cherry Explorer as a wedding present, and I can't believe how beautiful this guitar is! The neck is very fast, and the pickups respond well, whether playing clean or with distortion, and the overall tone is amazing, even when unplugged! It was well set up right out of the box, and I think that out of the 3 available finishes, the Heritage Cherry is the best. To anyone considering an Explorer, have a look at the Heritage Cherry.  It won't disappoint.
