This is the entry level guitar for those looking for the Gibson sound and feel (aside from the very limited melody makers) and it delivers that in spades.
I went to the store looking looking for a humbucking guitar to complement my Telecaster, and tried out just about everthing they had in the $300-$900 range. After testing guitars like a PRS SE Custom 24, a couple of Jacksons, and a plethora of Epiphone guitars, the SG felt immediately better in my hands. The neck is chunkier than the Jacksons were, but not awkwardly large and it fits my hands perfectly. I am 6'1 with average sized hands for my height, but my girlfriend (who tries to learn to play) says the neck feels too fat to her so you should really try one out before purchase if you're a girl or have small hands. The finish on the neck is silky smooth, and the frets are just the right size for easy play. The action is not super low, but I don't feel like that detracts from it's playability one bit. It's simply an easy guitar to play.
As I'm sure you know by now, the bridge pickup is not the same as an SG standard. But make no mistake, this is a top quality pickup. It's the same as a 489T but with alnico 2 magnets instead of alnico 5, which gives it a lower output. Some people expecting a firebreathing SG sound may be a little bit dissappointed, but it's just fine with me. The output of these pickups are actually right in line with the Burstbucker 1/2 combo you find in Gibson custom shop reiusse 58-59-60 guitars, and they are the same quality as the 498T in the SG Standard or the Gibson Custom guitars. If you really want that perfect SG sound, it's not hard to find a 498T pickup for under 100 bucks, and you're still getting that SG sound at a bargain basement price. Tested immediately next to other guitars in the price range, it simply blew everything away IMO except maybe the 50th Anniversary Epi LP 1960 reissue that has BB 1 & 2s (which sounded fantastic). I did try out a Jackson with EMGs that probably sounded better for metal, but if that's your primary musical style, I don't know why you'd even be looking at this guitar. The quality of those guitars (all of them, not just the Epi or Jackson) was not even comparable though, this was just a better guitar all the way around.
I hate when people call this guitar "basic", there's really not much more you could ask of a guitar except maybe coil splitting, but that's just splitting hairs. It does everything you expect from a Gibson without all the window dressing. I'm sure there's a dud or two in the batch, but mine is built flawlessly so I wouldn't trust people saying they're all inferior quality. And it I don't have any trouble keeping this guitar in tune, and don't know what's going on with the people who say there's is. Maybe it's operator error.

If you are considering buying this guitar, please allow me to help you reconsider...first off it is a very light-weight guitar which most likely the only good thing about it. The action was horrible and it felt no better then one of a squier if not worse...the pickups are pretty degrading with muffled tone or overbearing feedback. It also will definitely will go out of tune easy if not set up professionally. Even then the B and G strings go out with easy bends. If you think you can go gibson without spending the loot you are sadly mistaken. you might as well buy an epiphone if you wanted to do that because they're about the same in terms of quality. Execept this one is way overpriced because it says gibson on the headstock. Come with a case, soft though which pretty useless. If you want a nice guitar, save another half a grand and go for the sg standard and you will then be amazed at the value and quality of a true gibson product.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:
This is a fantastic guitar for the money. I just got it and I couldn't beleive the way this thing plays. Right out of the box, it feels and sounds like it's set up for the stage. No joke, I love it. Gibson really cares about quality and performancce. I have a taylor, martin and two fender teles'. Action on this axe is amazing. And Musicians Friend was great to work with.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:
Until this purchase, I've only played acoustic but I wanted to branch out into electric and I've always liked the SGs.
I went with this model because I like the faded look and the neck was similar to my Martin D28. Oh, and the price was right.
And, even as an electric novice, I can tell this is a good guitar. Easy to play, responsive pickups, great tone - and sustain that acoustic players can only dream about.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:
There is nothing wrong with this guitar, I love it! It's incredibly light. The action is perfect out of the box in fact only one string was out of tune, I tuned it and it has stayed in tune. It plays great sounds great, feels great, looks great and is exactly what I wanted. I can't stop playing it! I've been a fender guy for decades, but my fenders are gathering dust. This guitar is not for snobs who need to play a status symbol. It's beautifully bare, everything you need and nothing you don't.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:
Of course I am writing this review within a few weeks of getting the guitar, so I can't speak about how it holds up over time, but here's my experience with it so far.
It came in one piece, with no wrapping around it, inside a soft gibson gig bag, as if coming back from a friends house after band practice. Maybe I got a floor model or something, but regardless, it looks, feels, and plays great. Lighter than expected, or lighter than I remember it in store
Note, the current model (december 2012) has dot inlays on the neck, and no text on the bell shaped truss rod cover.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:
As a working man with a family and a home, I'm not going to spend more than 1000 on a guitar. So I've bought a lot of guitars in the 400-700 range. A lot of them look fantastic, some of them sound good, very few of them play well. I could always swap out the pick ups and get them to sound better and I could always do stuff with the tuners/nut/bridge to get them to stay in tune better. But a lot of them, there wasn't really much you could do to get the action lower without getting all kinds of buzz.
When I learned how much money is tied up in the cosmetic side of a guitar, I decided I'd look for a guitar where they cut that cost, as opposed to wood and wire.
Which led me to this guitar. It's not pretty, even though it does have a certain character. But it is solid. It has a great tone, stays in tune well, it had pretty low action when I got it, but was able to get it just a bit lower.
In the store, I felt the bridge pick up was too clean for my taste, so I bought a Seymour Duncan SH6 to go along with it. When I got home and plugged into my gear, I actually liked the stock bridge pickup, but the neck pick up sounds horrible. It sounds like someone threw a blanket over the whole thing. So that tells me you really need to try this guitar out on a setup that will be close to your own.
I've seen a lot of reviews with people complaining about the neck. It's very thick, but I like chunky necks, so I'm very happy with it. But you should definitely try this out first at a store even if you plan to order one online.
Bottom line: I wanted a guitar that cost under a grand and felt good in my hands and I found it. It may not be for ever body, but you should at least take a look at it.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:
I got it for christmas this morning. I haven't played it a whole lot yet...but I have played it. I did notice when I switched from Rhythm to Treble on the 3 way switch, it crackles sometimes and cuts in and out. Not sure yet if my cord has a short or the Guitar wiring itself...I reccomend it over a standard for price and quality comparison.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:
This guitar is just great. I got the Worn Brown finish, and it looks stunning. The action on this guitar is just where I like it. The tone is great, and I'm playing through a cheap Line 6 Spider amp. I got this guitar for a great price, and have absolutely no regrets. The only thing I'm not a big fan of this the fat neck, I prefer a bit thinner necks, but since the action is so easy, it really isn't that much of a problem.
Simply put, this was the best guitar deal out there, and I am loving this Gibson.
