OVERVIEW

A modern edition of one of Gibson's most revered models.

A true legend of acoustic instruments, the Gibson Hummingbird Pro acoustic-electric guitar was first introduced in 1960 as Gibson's earliest square-shoulder dreadnought guitar. Superb for all styles of playing, with a capacity for rich, first-position folk chords and intricate solo playing, the Gibson Hummingbird quickly became an iconic acoustic line, and a favorite among legends like Gram Parsons and Keith Richards. The Hummingbird has been one of Gibson Acoustic's most enduring guitar line.

This 2016 model features a comprehensive Plek-assisted setup for exceptional action and performance. Speaking of which, the fingerboard edge has been softened to make it fit the contour of your hand and a finer grit sandpaper and polishing compounds in the high gloss finish make it easier to slide up and down the neck with ease. The fingerboard and bridge have been hand rubbed and oiled to help them last longer and maximize the rosewood's natural vibrancy. It also has an engraved truss rod cover and L.R. Baggs Element VTC pickup so you can enjoy it when your sound needs the bump of amplification.

Includes hardshell case.

Body tonewoods (back, sides and top)

The body design of the Gibson Hummingbird Pro acoustic electric guitar is known as a square shoulder dreadnought. The top is made from Sitka spruce, while the back and sides are constructed from mahogany, giving the Hummingbird True Vintage a perfectly balanced midrange tone, with unbiased rich lows and clear treble registers. Selecting the right wood, and the formula to dry it out, are two of the most central procedures to Gibson's guitar-building process.

Rosewood fingerboard with traditional binding and split parallelogram inlays

The resilience of rosewood makes the fingerboard extremely balanced and stable, and gives each chord and note unparalleled clarity and bite. The Gibson Hummingbird Pro guitar's split parallelogram inlays are made of genuine mother of pearl, and are inserted into the fingerboard using a process that eliminates gaps and doesn't require the use of fillers. The fingerboard also sports traditional binding over the fret ends, which was a staple feature of many classic Gibson acoustic guitars for many years.

Bracing
Every acoustic electric guitar made by Gibson features hand-scalloped, radiused top bracing inside the body, a feature normally found only in limited run, handmade guitars. By scalloping each brace by hand, the natural sound of the acoustic guitar is focused more toward the center of the body, enhancing the guitar's sound projection. Gibson Acoustic's Hummingbird Pro guitar sports a single "X" bracing pattern similar to the design inside vintage Gibson J-30s. This traditional pattern delivers a balanced midrange tone, with unbiased lows and rich, clear highs, producing a warm tone that has been a favorite among artists and players alike since the original Gibson Hummingbird guitars introduced in 1960.

L.R. Baggs Element VTC acoustic pickup system

The L.R. Baggs Element Active System VTC undersaddle acoustic pickup delivers performance previously unattainable from an undersaddle pickup. The streamlined and efficient design removes every unnecessary internal component to improve the coupling between the transducer and the guitar. This substantially improves the sensitivity of the transducer so the acoustic guitar pickup delivers a robust, lively, and open sound with great dynamics and a delicate high end.

Nickel Grover Rotomatic tuners

Grover's original Rotomatic tuners are an engineering marvel, with abundant style and performance exactly suited for the Gibson Hummingbird guitar. With a gear ratio of 14:1, the Rotomatics deliver precision tuning in a durable housing that provides maximum protection for the gear and string post. All moving parts are cut for exact meshing, eliminating the possibility of slippage. A countersunk tension screw lets players regulate the tuning tension to any degree. A special lubricant inside the gear box provides smooth and accurate tuning stability.

Crown peghead logo

Gibson put the first crown peghead logo on an ES-300 back in 1940, and it has graced the headstocks of many legendary Gibson guitars ever since, including today's Hummingbird Pro acoustic electric guitar.

Rosette

A rosette is the beautiful, hand-crafted circle around the sound hole, and can be one of the most ornamental elements of any acoustic guitar. It is also one of the most subtle and complicated woodworking decorations on any acoustic guitar. The rosette on the Gibson Hummingbird Pro guitar is a double-ring rosette, with the main ring consisting of seven-ply binding, and the second ring three-ply binding, adding a stylish, understated elegance to the Gibson Hummingbird True Pro acoustic-electric guitar.

I bought this online from MF and this really could be; "the only acoustic you will ever need". Rich full sound. Booming base with beautiful sweet bright treble. Tons of projection. The build quality is first class all the way. Chunkier neck with a wide nut that is very comfortable to play. And yes, the woody smell of this guitar says: "come hold and play me". The action out of the box is perfectly playable but after a professional set-up and a new set of Gibson 11 phosphor bronze strings she soars. With a thin nitro finish this guitar is just going to get better and better with the years. Beautiful strummer, maybe not so much a picker like a Martin, but if you have always wanted a real Gibson and or a dreadnought IMHO you simply cannot go wrong with this guitar!

I was extremely disappointed when I received my Gibson Pro The finish on the guitar looked like dark brown paint, you could not even see the wood grain. The clearcoat had what looked like machined swirls throughout the finish. Thought about swapping the guitar because I love the sound, but could not get past the quality issue. If Gibson would let that guitar out of it's facility, I wondered what other quality issues it might have. Musician's Friend handled the return very well, with no hassles. Thanks for that!

A working guitar

By markb

Comments about Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

This guitar followed me home. The more I play her, the better I like it. After about 15 minutes of playing, it was inevitable -- we were bonded. I upgraded the electronics to a Fishman Rare Earth Pro. Which works better for strumming than the under saddle pickup in my opinion. (I like the LR Baggs M1A better.) Using a dbx 15 band equalizer I found the plugged-in sound I wanted. In short, she sings wonderfully unplugged and nice through the PA system. All the wonderful sound of a fully dressed hummingbird in an instrument that can be used daily. I would feel uncomfortable putting many hours on the collector's version.

Comments about Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar from Musician's Friend used. The guitar is superb in every aspect for being used! The playability is fantastic for my tastes. Some people have stated the action is too high, but I am fine with it as it is. I can't even tell I am playing it half the time, it's like running my fingers over silk! The construction is fantastic! It smells woodsy, and looks great! The L.R. Bags pickup works great! What more can I say, It's a Gibson, buy it if your in the market!

Plays very well and love the sound

By Feemelvis

from Santa Fe, NM

Comments about Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

I played a handful of guitars at the big box shop in town and couldn't find the right sound and feel for me. Standing on my tippie toes I pulled a hummingbird pro off the upper rack and immediately could feel the difference in quality. After playing for about 5 minutes, I knew I would own this guitar. It was delivered today from this company and I was sceptical at first after dropping some dough. I played for about an hour and fell in love with it again. I love the wide neck, deep sound, and beautiful finish. It's a really light guitar. The electronics were spot on through my little harmony amp. The action out of the box is too high for me, but playable. It also smells like a humidor, but I have no problem with that. Over all I'm very pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend this guitar. Cheers.

    Hummingbird Pro

Comments about Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

Purchased from the guitar giant house we all go to. Hanging on the wall with no scratches, surprise! So the set up was VERY high and I was worried the nut and saddle would need to be lowered so much that there would not be enough left. My luthier did a fine job and it plays like silk. The big E is not quite loud enough. Maybe it is the Elixer custom lights I had it set up with but probably not. All that aside, I LOVE it, great woodsy odor you can smell from 3 feet away. Plugged in it sounds very nice. The finish is top notch.

    Truly Great Acoustic

Comments about Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

I had the opportunity to buy a guitar in this price range and shopped at a store that had a bunch of Martins and Gibsons. I'm partial to Gibsons because they look much prettier and the action is always lower than on Martins in my experience. I tried out a half dozen guitars and this Hummingbird Pro was the sweetest sounding. Has clarity and definition that others didn't have. The sunburst finish was beautiful. I've had mine for about 6 years now and take care of it by using a guitar humidifier which I recommend to everyone who wants to keep an acoustic in good condition. I had a guitar for 15 years which got damaged due to dry winters. Get a humidifier and some distilled water and get in the habit. The pickup system sounds pretty good but I find it best to use an EQ to get the most out of the guitar amplified. Boost the high end, dampen the mids a little. This guitar has a booming spot at about 160 hertz. I use Martin strings with an 11 high E and find that any gauge lighter gives up too much tone.

Comments about Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

This is a fine example of Gibson quality and workmanship. Out of the box the setup was flawless and the fit and finish superb. Not quite as bass heavy as a J-45 but the sound works well with our band. This guitar works very well (for me) with Elixyr 11's on it as I'm a rhythm player. A sound hole plug eliminates unwanted low frequency hum. I have this problem with my Larrivee as well so it might be our sound system that's at fault. A nice hard shell case is included. You won't be disappointed.

pros-sounds great for rhythm playing or voice acompanyment.

very good volume Found only one tiny flaw in the finish- looks like a bit of lint in the finish by the soundhole. Tuners work well.
Action was acceptable; won't be changing that anytime soon. Nice case. Sound is "thick",meaning not much separation of notes in chords. Single notes are not thin sounding at all. Good for meaty sounding chord work.
Cons- Rough fret ends. The back and sides have heavily applied stain- no grain is visible, a bummer to me. Is something being hidden? This was made in 2016, but is labeled 2017 on the serial number. Therefore it has the new '17 vintage sunburst, which looks to me like it was dragged through a swamp- no highlights, just dullish colors on the front. Changed the strings down to 11's and lost more volume and bass than on my other guitars. Plugged in sound is decent through a PA.

Comments about Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

I grabbed one of these on sale, and it was one of the best purchases I've ever made. The sound is not what you would usually expect with a Hummingbird, as it has a bit deeper sound. Depending on the model you get, with the cutaway or without, you'll find slightly different tones. I've seen different comments on the grain and finish. The model I received (the 2016) has a fantastic sunburst top, with a nice grained back and sides. While the sides are fairly dark, in the right light you can see the mahogany grain perfectly.

The pickup system in this model is fantastic, with the controls hidden in the sound-hole, so no additional holes have been drilled or cut into the body. The Grovers keep this in tune effortlessly. Overall this is an absolutely incredible value and an instrument that'll only get better with age.

Needed another tool for the job... This guitar covers all styles very well... Simple electronics that sound pure and reliable.. Pro instrument for sure.. Action was perfect out of the box.. Slide, fingerpicking, strumming, lead playin.. You name it. Like this Hummingbird pro better than standard Hummingbird. Has 25.5 scale which make for very balanced sound.. For solo shows this is the only acoustic guitar I need.. If you play for a living it's worth the cash.. It's a Gibson nuff said.

Went out with some cash to try out a few guitars. Had a wall full of different Taylors try out, as I was very curious about them. They sounded okay, but just didn't feel good. It's true, you like them, or you don't, I guess. Got the Hummingbird Pro 2016 handed over by the shopkeeper and just fell in love with it. The feel, the sound, ... nothing like any guitar I ever had. Love the wide neck and the action of mine is a tad higher (still very ok though), but that contributes to the sound. Ended up buying it. There was a connection on the spot. It smells good, it plays good and it looks good and man, it's mine to have :-). And it's a Gibson! (from which I heard there were some quality issues). Solid hard case included. And of we go. Must say, it's a guitar with a sweet but specific sound. Not all the songs I write (acoustic, fingerpicking and strum), do necceserily favour the sound of this specific guitar, but this only defines the individuality of the guitar more. The songs who do sound very 'professional' to me.
