Great guitar but not quite a home run

Comments about Gibson L-00 12 Fret Blues Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

A small-body guitar is not necessarily for everyone, but if you're looking for one this is really nice. The body is shallower than a dreadnought and feels more or less like an electric when played sitting down. The neck is apparently a V but doesn't feel that sharp. Compared to a '57 LP Jr. reissue the neck doesn't feel as big.

Sound wise this has the same boxy midrange thing that small-body guitars have going on when strummed heavily. The volume is nicely even with fingerstyle and light-medium picking. This is awesome! The 12-fret nature of this guitar theoretically increases the punchiness - not sure about that, but it's punchy. I'm an up and down the neck kind of guitarist and don't find the 12-fret nature to be a problem, and have even volume up and down the board.

OK, so I pretty much love this guitar. The things I don't like are easily fixed, though for a guitar this price it's kind of annoying to have to do anything.

    A) Bridge pins are the cheapest possible -- yeah, I know, you may debate how much bridge pins affect tone. I personally feel I hear a difference and think that for this price point it should be at least bone (I like mammoth ivory, but wouldn't expect that at this price). The pins are the cheapest plastic I've seen used in any guitar in my life. The molding seam is sharp enough to cut your hand! W T F! Honestly, this is so bad it's SHAMEFUL!

    B) The saddle and nut are made of Tusq (a plastic bone substitute). Not usually considered a premium component, though there are people who love it. Not my preference but I can see someone arguing for it tone-wise perhaps. Other Gibson acoustics (Blues King, etc.) in this price range have bone, which would have been my preference.

    C) Doesn't come with basic set-up adjustment tools. This is across the board with Gibson these days so make of that what you will.

Anyway, apart from that stuff, which can be corrected, great guitar! Feels pretty much like an electric playing from a seated position. Great neck, and nice to have the integrated pickup.

There aren't many Gibson small body 12-fretters. If this is something you're into, great call. I have the vintage sunburst, and it looks close to the stock pics. VERY annoying to have low quality pins (objectively) and saddle/nut (subjectively, I guess), but once those are replaced this guitar will live up to its potential.
