The Gibson Les Paul J Electric Guitar, or LPJ for short, packs a lot of tone into one affordable package.

The LPJ offers all the ingredients that made the most desirable Les Paul Standards legendary—classic tonewoods, innovative hardware, two genuine humbucking pickups, and of course Gibson’s acclaimed build quality and playability—all wrapped up in a stripped-down, no-nonsense package that makes this guitar a flat-out performer. Simpler esthetics and a cool worn-look finish technique add up to big savings for the player, and the LPJ still looks great.

The most revered Les Paul Standards ever made had bodies constructed of a mahogany back with a two-piece carved maple top, and the LPJ begins with these same cornerstones of tone. When paired, these woods offer a tonal depth and complexity unmatched by any single-wood construction, with warmth and richness from the mahogany, and superb clarity and “snap” from the maple, all of which translates beautifully into the guitar’s amplified sound. The mahogany back is strategically weight relieved to improve comfort and enhance resonance.

A neck made from hard-wearing maple is glued into the body, and carved to our popular rounded 50s profile that measures .818” at the 1st fret and .963” at the 12th. It is topped with a genuine rosewood fingerboard that carries 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays. There’s no pickguard or fingerboard binding to clutter the straight-on, stripped-down look of the LPJ, while quality touches continue with a PLEK-cut nut made from black Corian™ to subtly echo the black speed knobs and black pickup rings and covers. The traditional back-angled headstock is silkscreened with a gold Gibson logo that stands out clear and proud.

A pair of Gibson’s popular Modern Classics™ humbucking pickups fire up the LPJ through your amp of choice. Made in the image of the legendary PAF humbucker and modified to suit the needs of the contemporary guitarist, the set includes a 490R in the neck position, made with an Alnico II magnet and standard-wound coils for plenty of warmth and clarity, and a 498T in the bridge position, with over-wound coils and an Alnico V magnet for more punch and sizzle in your lead playing.

An independent volume and tone control per pickup plus a three-way toggle selector switch allows a broad range of sonic variations, while Gibson USA’s legendary Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece ensure solid sustain and outstanding intonation. A set of vintage-style tuners with black keys provides an impressive 16:1 gear ratio for precise and efficient tuning. Put it all together, and the new LPJ is the fastest road to a genuine Les Paul, sparing none of the tone, while putting the legend in your hands with far less load on your wallet.

Each guitar includes a black Gibson gig bag, owner’s manual and truss-rod wrench.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul J Electric Guitar:

Setup was near perfect, unless you like your instruments with low action. Out of the box, even the tuning only needed to be adjusted about a half-step and it was ready to roll.

I was a bit leery about what corners Gibson cut to put these guitars into this price range. Upon examination, everything looks and feels tight and it plays like a dream. The cut corners were primarily with the cosmetics: No binding; no slick high gloss finish; no flamed wood top; no mother-of-pearl logo inlay on the headstock. It's pretty much just a simple stain and a spit varnish. But the finish is velvety smooth with a fast neck. Considering the build quality of these guitars, I'm wondering if the "J" stands for "Journeyman," because it is truly an affordable workingman's guitar. You won't need to baby it or worry about banging it up while gigging like you would a four grand Custom.

I haven't had mine apart, but photos I've seen online of other's LPJs show that the plastic covers on the pickups are integrated into the mounts, so you won't be ripping off the covers without destroying the pickups. They also use a new component plug-in system, similar to stuff inside your computer. All this sort of stuff doesn't matter unless you're gonna hot-rod the thing.

And there's the thing: You can be completely satisfied with this guitar if you keep it stock , but these guitars practically beg to be modified. Whether it's just something simple like changing the pickup rings to a different color or going crazy and replacing the guts—I think there will be an entire cottage industry that pops up to help the modding community, similar to what happened with Epiphone's Valve Junior tube amps a few years back.

Simply put, it's a great guitar at a great price. Don't let it get away.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul J Electric Guitar:

USA built! Price rivals some Strat models in terms of value. Excellent guitar all the way around. Satin finish on the neck feels great. Chocolate finish is a lot darker (and more reddish) in person. If you can live without the cosmetic features of some of the higher end Les Pauls, I definitely recommend this guitar!

This LPJ right out of the box played great...setup was perfect(for me)right out of the box. Honestly I fooled with pickup height a bit. Bought the brushed Gold looks real nice. For the price cannot beat it. Last few years I have been a Fender guy Strat's and Tele's. I grew up a Gibson fanatic. Gibson's USA built LPJ is butt kickin'and as far as I am concerned this is the real thing(Les Paul)Good feel, sound, looks

Comments about Gibson Les Paul J Electric Guitar:

A real USA-made Paul at a great price. Great neck for rock, blues, jazz, Americana, country - you name it. As with all Pauls, it's a bit heavy - but you gotta know that before you buy one. I own a number of Fenders and a George Benson Ibenez, but have been wanting a Paul for some time -the weight kept me away. Glad I bought it and I have been playing it more than the others combined. The unusual black-out hardware and satin brown finish give it a custom look as well. Superb pick-ups emit great tone.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul J Electric Guitar:

I just picked one of these up from my local music store today. I don't know if it was just because of where mine came from, but mine needed a little setup with the pickup height and bridge. Aside from that, this thing is awesome. I own an ESP (Ltd) EC-1000, and was debating between the LPJ and a Schecter Blackjack ATX to add to it. I play some really heavy music so I was skeptical about passive pickups, but this thing blew the Schecter out of the water. It doesn't get quite the mean distortion that active pickups have, but everything comes through so clear and this thing still sounds plenty heavy (in fact it may even replace my ec-1000 as my main guitar). For this price especially, you can't beat this guitar. Whether you're playing blues, classic rock, or even really heavy hardcore, this thing will not disappoint.
