I like the classic sound of P-90's, and I love the Ebony fingerboard.
The Gibson Les Paul Junior Special is the most basic, stripped down Les Paul you may find on the market today. However, it is still a Gibson Les Paul, and that says something. Like its higher end siblings, the Gibson Les Paul Junior Special has a neck and body that are made of Mahogany. The body of the Les Paul Junior Special is made of a solid slab of flat Mahogany, unlike a higher end or more expensive Les Paul, such as a Les Paul Standard, which has a carved Maple top. Leaving off the Maple top cuts down on several things. One is that it keeps cost down. Another is that it keeps the weight of the guitar down, and you will notice that this guitar feels significantly lighter (about 2 pounds on average) than a Les Paul Standard. Unfortunately, it also cuts down on the bite and crispness of the sound of the guitar. This guitar is darker sounding than a Les Paul model with a Maple top, a Mahogony body, and P-90 pickups. In certain respects it sounds more like an SG Classic with P-90 pickups, because both of them have a solid Mahogany body. However, because it is thicker than an SG Classic, the Les Paul Junior Special has a deeper, darker, and richer tone. Of course, depending on your musical tastes and the sound you want to achieve, this can be a desirable trait and not a drawback. However, that being said, it is important to realize that you are not going to readily get that classic crisp, cutting bite from the Les Paul Special Junior that you can so easily get out from a Les Paul Standard, and you are not going to get the same tone as you would get from some other Les Paul models that have a Maple top with P-90's.
Like most Les Paul models, the neck on this incarnation of the Les Paul Junior Special is also made of solid Mahogany, and it has 22-frets. However there is a big difference in the tonewood that the fingerboard is made from, and that is what excited me about this guitar. Most Les Paul models, including the previous incarnations of the Les Paul Special, were all made with a Rosewood fingerboard. However this Les Paul Junior Special has an Ebony fingerboard. Is this a big deal? You bet it is. An Ebony fingerboard enhances the articulation of the pick attack when one is playing. If you are skeptical of this, I would urge you to compare a similar model of a Les Paul with a Rosewood fingerboard side by side to this guitar with an Ebony fingerboard. I think you will agree that the individual notes of a chord are more distinct and clear, and the bite and attack of individually played notes is more pronounced. I was really excited by this. When I crank the Volume Control up and the Tone Control down on the neck pickup, the singing sustain is simply incredible through a good tube amp.
The inlays on the neck are Pearloid Dot Inlays. There is no binding to be found anywhere on this guitar. The tuning pegs on the Les Paul Special Junior are white button tuners, and I found that they did a very good job of holding this guitar in tune quite well. Personally, I prefer tuning pegs that are a bit larger because they are easier to turn. The Les Paul Special Junior Single Cutaway has a Tune-O-Matic Bridge and Stopbar Tailpiece. All of the hardware on the guitar is finished in a rust resistant Chrome. There are two Volume and Tone control knob, which means there is one pair of each for each of the two pickups.
And now a few words about the feel of this guitar. As to the playability, I very much liked the neck on the Gibson Les Paul Special Junior Single Cutaway. The neck is a nice blend between the super slim and fast 1960's Slim Taper style, and the thicker Rounded 1950's style neck. This neck felt substantial, and yet was fast and quick. Further, the slightly thicker neck, in conjunction with the long neck tenor, really makes this guitar sustain beautifully. The contour of the body, as well as the generous single cutaway, permits easy reach to even the highest of the frets, and the construction of the guitar is such that one can even play chords very high up on the neck and close to the body with ease and comfort. The fret work was very nice and consistent and there were no sharp overhangs or edges.
Overall, I would have to say that I very much liked the way this guitar sounds and plays. It is one great lower mid-priced guitar. It is a fun guitar to play. It is light enough to play for an all night gig, and it is well balanced, and not too neck heavy. The Les Paul Junior Special feels good to play, it has great tone, and has the classic sound of 1960's rock. It is versatile enough to get a jazz sound, a 60's rock or blues sound, and also can produce a very modern sound as well. The Ebony fingerboard elevates this guitar from some of the other previous incarnations of the Les Paul Special, especially the faded models. In short, this is a very nice sounding guitar, and it is a very versatile sounding instrument.
In short, I really liked this guitar. Owning the Les Paul Special Junior Single Cutaway will permit you to say that you own a Gibson Les Paul, which is of course saying a lot.
This is a simple, but well made guitar.
Good.

What the picture doesn't show you is that this guitar is almost completely flat. If that doesn't bother you then good for you, but being used to the nice carved tops on epiphone les pauls, it felt uncomfortable, and I was disappointed in Gibson. If they are going to charge this much for a guitar, they should at least make it well. But then again quality is not exactly what Gibson is known for... Besides that I liked the guitar. The finish was alright, nothing special, and the neck played well. The guitar sounded quite good, which is why I even bothered reviewing it. So no it doesn't feel or look like an expensive lp, but it sounds pretty damn good, and if you can get over the flat top, one could easily fall in love with this guitar. I don't think I would ever buy it, but if it feels right to you, then go ahead and get it.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway:
Previously I owned a Fender Standard Telecaster (MIM) and a Fender 62 Reissue Jazzmaster (MIJ), both good guitars but nothing comes close to this. The Slim-taper neck is so nice and comfortable to play. The P90s sonic range is brilliant, and it sounds great. I play a lot of Blues stuff, and Rock and Roll (BJM, The Beatles, Rolling Stones) and this guitar masters them all.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway:
I'm a so-so guitar player, but I love guitars! I have 3 other LPs (Standard, Deluxe & Custom) and this is the fun one! I'm adding a Bigsby to make it even better. This is close to my 52 Tele reissue only with all the P90 Gibson voodoo you could ever want. Running through an Egnater Tweaker with a lot of gain...you will melt your walls and scare your dogs! Woof!

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway:
i was suprised it came with a hard gibson case . bought it used but it didn't have a scratch .picture showed scratches on the pickguard but it still had the plastic on it. when i took it off it was perfect. the setup was less than perfect , but i do my own setups so i would have changed it around anyway.
Comments about Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway:
Very simple and versatile guitar. The size, weight and balance are perfect. The P90's can do ANYTHING from the cleanest clean to the raunchiest distortion with ease. I love the way I can set up the neck pickup to an almost acoustic quality, and then punch in the bridge pickup with a high output distorted tone without touching the volume pedal or switching effects.
Okay...it does not have a fancy carved maple top, body/neck binding or a nice translucent finish. But for a "stripped down" and "basic" guitar, Gibson did not skimp on features. Unlike some Les Paul Specials or Juniors....this guitar has features of a Standard Les Paul such as a 2 volume, 2 tone controls, a stopbar tailpiece and 3 way selector toggle. It has a simple, but elegant finish that shines with stage lights, and an undeniable sonic presence. I absolutely adore the P90 sound over humbuckers, but that is a personal matter.
No major issues. Overall construction, fit/finish and setup were impeccable. I gave it an "8" for quality simply because some of the screws jiggled themselves loose over a period of about 3 months of playing. Not a show-stopper, but for any guitar in this price range, I would expect that the screws would remain in place during normal use.
In my humble opinion, this guitar can do as much, or more than a standard Les Paul. I admit, the carved maple top with humbuckers does provide a more beautiful appearance with a fatter sound. However, this guitar can keep up with its big brother without a problem.

This
No bells or whistles. But, it has P90 pickups and a mahogony body. This thing wails. I have several Les Pauls with humbuckers, even an LP goldtop with P90s, this thing is a great guitar I can gig without worrying somebody will rip it off. If you haven't played Gibson P90s, you need to. I know why Billy Joe Armstrong prefers P90s. These are the earthy foundation of rock, punk and even indie. I love my Gibsons with P90s. And the Gibson Special is a way of flying tourist, while sipping champagne and getting a massage......with a happy ending.
Comments about Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway:
Sound-wise, this thing has amazing sustain. The P-90s are an excellent match for a Les Paul body. It has that really raw rock sound when distorted, and bright and clear when clean. This makes an excellent blues guitar as well. With the pickups in the middle position with the volume tone knobs adjusted to your liking this thing has some really sweet and organic tones.
Great guitar for a number of reasons. 1. Its a Les Paul with tremendous sustain and great sounding P-90 pickups. 2. Its a Gibson at a reasonable price (For this day and age) 3. Looks really nice and has a vintage look. Comes with the standard les paul controls. Toggle switch and 4 tone/volume knobs. Tuners are very good and it was set up quite nicely. The string holes in the nut could be dug just a tad deeper (atleast in the guitar I got) but its no big deal. This also comes with an ebony fretboard which I really like. Feels great. I was able to get mine on ebay in Gloss Yellow which they dont make anymore.
The neck, I'd say, is a middle ground between the 60's Slim Taper and the 50's Rounded. Kind of feels alittle like the necks on the lower end epiphones but slimer, faster and more comfortable.
The set up, finish, tuners and electronics are very good. The frets on mine were flawless.
A Gibson Les Paul with P-90 pickups for this price? Its a very reasonable deal. I would get this anyday over a GIbson LP Standard. The only reason why those are pricier is because of the effort involved in their complex finnishes. Quality wise I'd say these two are the same.
Comments about Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway:
If you play Classic Rock, Jazz, Country and especially Blues, this guitar does it all! As you can tell, I am a big fan of the P-90,and especially in a Gibson les Paul Special. Beautiful tone woods, fast neck, sweet pups, smooth fretboard, polished frets extraordinaire, tone for days.
Not much I can add to compliment this stripped down Blues and Rock And Roll machine, just that I am glad it came my way at such a cool reduced price! I got mine as a mint condition return, and that was after the other finishes were no longer available. I gave it a 9 because the slat for the top E string seemsto be cut too narrow.l. I'll have to remedy that soon.
The quality is top shelf all the way. Ebony fingerboard, nicely polished frets, deadly P-90 pups, exquisit case. A really nice TV Yellow gloss finish.
The value is there all the way. Gibson quality, alot of asttention to the details. Epert craftmanship. The sound is incredible. Warm, resonant, and the P-90 pick-ups are wound just right. Very clean when you lower the voloume, and they quack and squeel when you pus them through a tube amp.
Comments about Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway:
Pretty nice guitar all the way around.....it just needs a bit of TLC by a qualified guitar pro to be a "10" over all. Nice look, nice sound, it is a tad heavy (as I said, I am use to SGs), beautiful black binding on the sides of the neck, a gorgeous head stock, nice action, with good playability! I rolled the dice and bought this on-line without playing it, and my gamble payed off.
I took a chance and bought this Les Paul even though I am an SG man. The price was right, it came with a hard shell case, and it has a very vintage look. Turns out it is a very nice guitar for the money. Sure, it is a slab style body with no maple top but you can not tought one of those for this kind of money.
The head stock on thing is soooooo sleek and sexy! The tuners do their jobs by keeping it in tune, the P-90 pick ups rock out, and it is overall, very well made!!! The only trouble I had was some very slight buzzing on my A string and a very slight bit of deadness to my high E string on the frets between 16-22. I will spend the money to have this fine guitar set up by a professional.
