Taking design and visual cues from the Les Pauls of the '80s and '90s, the Les Paul Traditional Pro features BurstBucker 3 and '57 Classic pickups with push/pull coil splits, '60s neck profile, Grover locking tuners, antique binding, period-correct pickguard, vintage Gibson top hat knobs, and the revolutionary Plek set up.
With all the fat, sweet, snarling Les Paul tone that purists love, the new Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro sports a mahogany body with a thick maple cap for the perfect blend of warmth and clarity. The top is finished in high-gloss lacquer, while the back, sides, and neck have a smooth satin finish that feels great and lets the wood resonate fully. Each Les Paul Traditional also comes with Gibson USA's standard black snakeskin case.
Period-Correct Pickguard
The creme-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late 1950s and the early 1960s. Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, prompting Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether. During the 1980s and 1990s, Gibson began reinstalling the pickguard in the factory, and the Les Pauls from this era once again arrived in stores bearing the classic, creme-colored pickguard. The Les Paul Traditional comes equipped with a period-correct pickguard, designed to protect the maple top.
Pickups: Neck - '57 Classic; Bridge - BurstBucker 3
Among the qualities that make Gibson's original "Patent Applied For" humbucking pickups so unique are the subtle variations between coil windings. For the first few years of their productions—1955 to 1961—Gibson's PAF humbuckers were wound using imprecise machines, resulting in pickups with slightly different output and tone. The BurstBucker 3 and '57 Classic Plus pickups are the result of Gibson's drive to capture and recreate this characteristic. Introduced in 1992, the '57 Classic provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch, inspired by those original PAFs that received a few extra turns of wire. Both are made by Gibson to the exact same specs as the original PAFs, including Alnico II magnets, nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers, and vintage-style, 2-conductor braided wiring. Gibson added poly-coated wiring, which improves consistency by eliminating thick or thin spots on the wiring, and wax potting, which removes all internal air space and any chance of microphonic feedback. Both pickups offer coil splitting for single-coil sounds via push/pull switching in the volume controls.
Revolutionary Plek Set Up
The Les Paul Traditional is the first model from Gibson USA to utilize the revolutionary Plek machine in setting up the guitar. The Plek is a German-made, computer-controlled machine that carefully measures each fret, along with the fingerboard height under each string, and then automatically dresses each fret, virtually eliminating string buzz and greatly improving the overall playability of the guitar. This pioneering process does in minutes what it takes a luthier several hours—sometimes even days—to accomplish. Every fret is accurately aligned, and the guitar is properly intonated, leaving the instrument "Plek'd" and amazingly playable.
Antique Binding
To see the process of putting the binding on the Les Paul Traditional is to really appreciate the effort and attention that Gibson puts into each instrument. A lone craftsman will carefully glue and fit 2 pieces of binding around the entire body of a Les Paul. He then winds a single, very long piece of narrow cloth around the entire body until the entire surface is nearly covered. The body is then hung to dry for a full 24 hours before it is unwrapped and moved into the next phase of production. It has been done the same way for over 100 years. Some question the value of adding binding, but Gibson believes it is a fundamental part of our rich guitar-making history. The binding adds elegance to the Les Paul Standard, and helps protect the edges of the body. The neck binding is installed over the fret ends, which eliminates sharp fret edges and provides for a smooth neck and easier playability.

So I walked into the local music store repeating the mantra that I always do when entering that money vortex! I was there to buy 1 thing... A PEDALBOARD! I was repeating in my head over and over and over "pedalboard, pedalboard, pedalboard". So I walk in and immediately out of the corner of my eye I see the new marshall class 5 amp. (don't worry im getting to the les paul). So my mantra disappeared and i was checking out the amp because I had seen youtube demos of it and i was looking for a small practice/recording amp that had that tube feel to it. So as usual... a staff member comes up and asks me if I want to plug into it and check it out... so I say sure... he asked me what kind of guitar I would like to check it out with.. "what kind of guitar do you play?" he asked... I said... "a Les Paul" (i have a 2001 Les paul Classic gold top) he says "a nice one"? I say "um... yeah, a nice one please"..
He comes back with a desert burst 2011 Les Paul Traditional Pro. He said that they had just got 2 of them in and he had just taken this one out of the box.
The second I held this guitar I was so impressed by everything! The top is brilliant with the dark desert burst... the Locking Grovers are chome plated and look so killer against the laquered finish of the front of the head stock. The neck is slim tapered. And the finish on the back and neck is a satin finish so it feels really nice to play. Also, gibson used the Plek system for the neck and honestly i dont know the difference.
I noticed the volume pots were both push/pull and I was very happy about that! I had all but forgotten about the amp and the pedalboard for that matter. I looked at the price tag and paused for a bit... numbers ran through my mind as I realized that even though i wasn't even in the market for a new Les Paul, I KNEW that I had to have this guitar!! So I left guitar center with a brand new Les Paul Traditional Pro and a new SKB stage 5 pedal board!
As I said before i aslo have a 2001 classic... and i have to admit.. the older guitar has a sweeter more full tone... for obvious age reasons.. but the added amenaties that gibson has installed in the new trad pro are jsut great for the gigging man... no more switching guitars to achieve that single coil sound... this guitar is very versitile! granted it doesn't sound alot like a tele or a strat... but it does do the trick in a live setting.. I record with the old gold top for the tonal reasons... but live... this traditional pro is my number 1. The locking Grovers sealed the deal.
Re-stringing is a snap! and it rarely comes out of tune.
anyway.. this guitar is well priced and comes with the hardshell case!
a true gibson break through in practical applications at a resonable price.. And I'm sure that in 10 years... the tone will be just like the ol' goldtop! Wood Sounds better with age

First: out of the box be ready to plop down $40 for a pro setup.Second: you will have a shallow dip in neck due to a radial neck curve below 8th fret, it needs relief so expect it, you will not have that straight down the neck level string height like a Jackson USA, it's not gonna happen folks. G string buzz pops his ugly head up from time to time, truss rod will need fine tuning till it settles in a bit over the first 6 months. This is not a fretless wondder if that is what you're thinking don't get it.This is a decent mid-level Gibson, but they seriously need to get quality control in check. I will put down cold cash that yours will NOT come properly setup out of box, being able to get in tune isn't the same thing folks, not knocking Gibson but they simply don't spend the time to do it. Please tell me I'm wrong when you get it since I do wish Gibson would step up, this is too much $$ not to receive more attention.

this ranks first, my fender strad 2nd, my epiphone hollow (P90 riveria) body third, but all very close. The Gibson is a top of the line proved guitar with amazing sound. If you could buy only one guitar, this would be it. Very pleased with the guitar and musicians friend pricing and service!

I already own a Les Paul Studio from 2008, so I can say that I think this guitar is definately a step above in terms of playability, looks and tone. I really like the sound of both pickups, but the '57 Classic in the neck does seem a good bit quieter (in terms of volume) than the bridge pickup does. Rolling off the volume knob on either pickup will clean them up dramatically. I don't use the coil taps, but I guess some players will be glad to have them. Pulling up on the volume knobs will help you get a Strat-like tone. By the way, this guitar is very versatile. You can get just about any tone you need out of it. As far as looks, the vintage sunburst finish looks great and so does the binding. Makes my old LP Studio almost seem like a piece of junk. The pickups in this guitar are more trebly and "out of phase" sounding than the 490R/498T combo in the Studio, probably due to them having different types of Alnico magnets. The neck feels great, the nut is well dressed and the frets are about perfect. This guitar plays wonderfully. Bending notes and inflecting vibrato is a piece of cake. The only complaint I have is about the truss rod cover. The screws are only halfway tightened down and the heads are stripped off, so I can't finish tightening them down. I'm sure this is not the norm and it could have happened somewhere after it left the factory. I'll have to call Gibson about that...
Overall, I love my Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro. I'll be playing it everyday for years to come.

got mine but didn't like the top grain - there was an unsightly long, narrow, dark flair looking like fixed crack. The very day I returned it for exchange I got MF notification on Pro II being available so I shelled out for extra $300 to get Pro II instead.
I'm not sure why I did it - regular pro is just fine and Pro II doesn't sound like huge improvement worth $300 for what I do - fiddling with some riffs and solos through a small comobo to keep my self in shape.
The Pro I got was fine (beside the wood grain blemish) - action was a bit high but that's normal for factory settings.
Single coils do buzz (as expected) since no passive humbacking is done on splits.

I've been searching around for a decently priced guitar under $2000 for a while now. I took my time because buying a guitar is life buying a new life partner, your going to develop a relationship with whatever you choose. I had felt several of these Traditional Pros in the past because i liked the idea of the versatile hum bucker and single coil pickup options. I wasn't too impressed with the ones i had felt, probably because they weren't set up as accurately as they should've been, or because they had been sitting on the guitar center wall for years... But one day i walked into Guitar Center and they had just received a new Goldtop Traditional Pro, made six months ago in the Gibson factory. Just by the looks of the gold top finish i was drawn to it. And let me tell you, this thing felt like Gold. I bought it the next day. I can't put this guitar down, it plays like a dream. I really enjoy the thinner style neck and the bends are effortless. I am able to play for 5x as long as i used to. I guess you just have to go out there and find that one gibson that they made right. Very satisfied Les Paul owner. If you are a strat lover, you'll have no problem getting used to this guitar instantly

This is my first Gibson that I upgraded from an Epiphone. I did not know what to expect when it arrived from MF. I bought the Eboney because it looks like a Steinway grand piano, guitar version. When I opened the case, it was the most beautiful guitar I have ever seen. I went through it with a fine tooth comb. It is built perfectly. I was shocked, my Fender American Strat had many flaws and poor workmanship. I never like the strings on new guitars that they come with so I changed them to my liking and the intonation, lowered the bridge a tad with zero fret buzz and wow. The tone is incredable, love the pickups. Now I understand why everyone plays a Gibson on stage.
The only drawback is the case smells pretty bad, like chemicals of some sort which I am sure will go away in time and the last thing is the strap knobs are small and you will have to get bigger knobs or strap locks. I like Dunlops personally. I have a 3 inch strap which will make this heavy guitar feel okay on your shoulder. Do not gripe at the weight because that is why the tone and sustain are so great.
Remember, if you like a thin neck like a Strat has, this is the guitar for you otherwise get another one with the 50's neck.
I have not been able to put this guitar down since I got it. It's like driving a VW then a BMW. So long Epiphone! It is worth the price big time and I got it on sale for 300 dollars cheaper through MF

Out of the box this guitar did it for me. Having been a die hard Strat player for 25 years I always loved the tone of an LP but never saw the value in what I think are overpriced Gibson guitars. The price for an instrument of this quality easily swayed me to buy it. Sight unseen and out of the box it was almost perfect. Action was a touch high and the strings were not great. A little tweaking and I'm a happy camper. This guitar howls. Pickups are great. I don't make use of the coil tapping - I have a Strat and Tele for that. My bandmates go crazy over the sound. I play through a late 80's red knob Fender "Evil Twin" with the band and a Fender Blues Jr. at home and through both it's fantastic. Love it, love it, love it. I was at the local large guitar store a month ago and the fit and finish of the Trad Pro Plus and 2012 Standards were no where near as good as this one. A quality instrument.

This is my first LP and I have owned this guitar for 6 months. I NEVER get sick of playing this guitar, after playing it for an hour I hang it on my wall and marvel at the fact that human hands made it. I dont understand how the acion is so low and the frets dont buzz - it plays and feels like a dream (i use 11 guage strings). The quality of this instrument is almost paradoxial to me. I Paid [$] on [@]. When splitting the coils, the tone is a little thinner than my liking, but when your playing with a band, you dont notice it as much. I do pride and joy on the split neck pickup. sounds great (but not like a Strat). I plug it into a vox ac30, and the pickups are soo responsive and clear, like a bell. It will give you great Keith Richards tone, to great Metallica tone, very versatile

I already own two American LP's (1992 Studio Light and 2006 Standard)and had been reading about the Trad Pro. I tried the models with the flat black finish on the back and found that to be a real turn off. It felt cheap and unbeffiting such a fine instrument. This model has the traditional stained and lacquered back and neck...worth the extra $200! Fit and finish are superb. This is my first Plek'd LP and I must say that out of the box it plays superbly...as well as my well worn 6 year old Standard. The tone is really great in dual coil mode...I'll have to see if the single coil is really useable in a live situation...I've had better sounding split coil guitars in the single coil mode. However I do really like the vintage Sunburst and locking tuners. Action and intonation are spot on and I like this guitar already...it won't have to grow on me. I do recommend this guitar!
