The Les Paul Studio '50s Tribute is built on a solid tradition. Ever since its introduction in 1983, the Les Paul Studio model has been enormously popular with players seeking the power and versatility of the original Les Paul Standard in a ready-for-action package, with a price to match. The instruments' reduced ornamentation—lacking body or fingerboard binding, and using plainer tops—has helped to put them in the hands of many more players, while their adherence to the Les Paul's hardware, pickup, and construction traditions retained all the thick, meaty tone and unsurpassed playability for which the Standard has been known for nearly 60 years.
The Les Paul Studio '50s Tribute has a traditional Les Paul mahogany body with a maple top that is graced with a grain texured satin finish. The mahogany neck with a '50s profile has a 22-fret baked maple fingerboard which adds the snappy response of ebony, but retains a warm, traditional medium-brown look like pau ferro. A 490R neck humbucker and 498T bridge humbucker harness the resonant power of the time-tested selection of tonewoods. TonePros Kluson-style tuners and the faithful Tune-O-Matic bridge keep your tuning and intonation right where it should be.
Baked Maple:
Aging maple through a “baking” process called torrefaction. The wood is kept at 200-300º F for a period of time until the wood knows it’s no longer a tree; Moisture is restored under pressure. This makes the wood very hard, sonically “live” and extremely stable. The snappy sound of ebony, with the look of medium-brown pau ferro. Many boutique manufacturers are now using this because it improves the wood with no chemical treatment, it’s environmentally friendly and is great for making better sounding and playing guitars!

I am so pleased with the entire Guitar and trust me if this guitar had a flaw I have no problem expressing it. I am in contact with several players Pro and just some players just enjoying playing at home and the Buzz is out on this Les Paul. I love watching the faces of all of them when I let them play her or just have them listen, not a bad remark. This is one of those guitars you let a Buddy or Son plug in and play and you must beg to get her back. As I have mentioned order one before Gibson stops making this Model.
I bought this Gibson Les Paul through Musicians Friend and it was a pleasure as usual dealing with them and a pleasure to receive and play this guitar. Its set up from Gibson was amazing the Tone at the Bridge pickup with gain dialed up on my Marshall JCM 900 was pure old school Rock. I changed channels on my amp and went to a more clean setting and went to the neck pickup and played some Blues and I was so impressed as its tone was so deep this guitar is a pure Tone Monster. I am 53 and have been playing for 43 year and have owned and own several Gibsons this plays and sounds as good as any Standard. The 50's neck for me is perfect I own Les Pauls with 60's necks and as I tell all players playing each one it is very easy to get used to playing each differant neck. The 498 pickup at the bridge is the same pickup used on Les Paul Customs. I have the Honeyburst it is stunning and the Gold witch hat Knobs with inserts sets off this beauty. I dont know how long Gibson is going to make this Model but I would add one to your stable before they are gone.
There was not a flaw and she was set up perfect not one Buzz on any string or fret. The entire guitar even though it is a satin is stunning.
A Gibson Les Paul For the price Musicians Friend is asking is a Home Run and if you cant afford new purchase one at Musicians Friend Used I have bought several this way and the product and service are 1st class. Gibsons quality and the price I have to rate it a 10.

I'm a Tele guy but really wanted a Les Paul. Money is tight these days and I didn't really want to give 2 grand for a LP standard. I read alot about this guitar and finally ordered one. Got it a few days later and here are my thoughts:
It sounds good. I have read that most people say you can't tell it from a more expensive LP. I probably wouldn't agree with that, but for the price this guitar does sounds very good. The pickups are fantastic.
It plays easy. The action on mine was low and the neck was very comfortable.
It needs a case. It came with the nicest gig bag I've ever had, but it is still a gig bag. This is a Gibson USA LP and it needs a hard case.
The finish is bad. I have read that the finish on these is bad to wear. I've not had mine long enough to know if that is true but I have a feeling in a short amount of time it would be an issue.
The guitar feels cheap. I know that there has to be some sacrifices to get the price down this low but the lack of binding/cheap finish/wood just seems too subpar for a Gibson USA guitar.
At the end of the day, if you're looking for a great practice guitar, you can't go wrong here. It is a great value for the money.
That said, if you want a really nice, recording/gigging guitar, I'd probably pass on this one. I've sent mine back and have an LP standard on the way.

Gibson came up with a great recipe for this guitar. The mahogany neck and body with the maple top sounds and feels great with the pick up combination supplied. Action was great and the intonation was spot on. Great guitar at a fantastic price.

This is my second review of this guitar after a month of playing it.I love this guitar and am very happy with it.All of my previous statements still hold true.But the most important thing that has realy sold me on this guitar is it's tone.I've always played mainly with the bridge pickup on all my guitars because the neck pickups sounded kind of weak, needing a little more volume but the 490 and 498 must be perfectly matched for each other,I don't notice a difference in volume. The neck pickup has a sweet,clean tone change that I realy like,perfect for country style music or 50's pop. The bridge pickup has that power chord bite that we all loved from the 60's and 70's rocking roll.This is truely a players guitar.Every Gibson that I've owned in the past also had Grover tuners which are probably the best,however I've always liked the look of Kluson tuners,the way they stick out from the headstock and have that vintage ivory look.As a kid growing up in the 60's, I wanted a Gibson so bad but could never afford one, most all of them had Kluson tuners. That was the main reason I chose this guitar and secondly the pickups.Ordering guitars online without playing them first is risky but not with this one.Thanks to all the folks at Gibson,keep up the good work.Buy American!

I've been playing for 40+ years and have owned more guitars than I can remember, but this one takes the cake.plays as good as my custom LP but at a fraction of the price.I can only say if you want an LP you might want to try this one. Love mine!

Absolutely amazing guitar from Gibson, it really is the real deal, without all the bells and whistles. The flashy binding, lacquer and things just aren't important to me. If they aren't important to you either then you should not hesitate to spring for this axe. I was significantly impressed with this so called "low end" Gibson, let me clear this up, there is absolutely NOTHING low end about this instrument. I sold my SG Standard to own this thing solely for the satin finish.

This product is an excellent guitar. I've played all my life in a Ibanez Rg, this guitar is really different of an Ibanez. For example, if you want to play fast (tapping + arpeggios) I think its better an Ibanez (or another "fast" guitar), but if you want a solid tone and a solid guitar, this is the one.
Although, I've noted that this guitar gets out of tone easily. Each time before playing, I have to tune it (I changed strings just after it arrived, so its not the strings). With my Ibanez I could stay in tune for months, and using & abusing with the tremolo. So, if this continues, I'll bring my guitar to an expert (luthier) to see what's going on.
Although, this item is an excellent guitar, the best thing you can find in price/quality. But if you want perfect finishes, dont go for this one and spend 2.000 more. But the difference in finishes only can be noted if you are really close from the guitar, otherwise anyone just wont note the finishes differences. Go 4 it! The Goldtop is gorgeus, looks like the Slash's 90's one.

Love this guitar. I waited a long time for this particular combination of wood (maple top) and pickup combination in this price range. I used to own the all mohogany body studio with the Burstbucker Pros but didn't like it. I feel that the 490r & 498t combination is the best of all that Gibson offers. Nice clear, fat, full tone suited for all types of music IMO. The whole guitar overall suits me. I happen to like satin finishes on my guitars, doesn't show all the smudges. Do not hesitate to buy this guitar, I'm sure you will be as pleased as I am. Just don't buy it and then knock Gibson for not doing this or that or not adding this or that. If you want all of the this' or that's then go ahead and spend an extra 1500.00 and be done with it. I'm thankful Gibson offers such a nice guitar at this price that sounds so fantastic.

This is a beautiful entry level Lp. Pickups are fantastic. Unbeatable electonics as usual. If you don't need the binding and clear laquer,this is the Les Paul for you. Excellent weight and balance. At 8 lbs. it's 2 lbs. lighter than my Classic LP.

I,ve owned several Gibsons in the past that cost considerably more, I guess because of the finish,but this one sounds as good or better.The guitar came packed well,not a mark on it.I made some minor adjustments, stretched and tuned up.The intonation was right on. The chambered body was much lighter than I expected, but I guess that's a good thing.Last week I jammed for about four hours with my Schecter c1 classic, and my back,neck and shoulder were hurting.I think I,ll make this my main guitar, it sings like the Schecter but less weight.Even though this axe has no slick finish,when your up on stage no one will know the difference.This is a good guitar for the price.I got the Honeyburst which was my personal favorite.The neck will take a little getting used to,but it feels good in my hands.I'm fiftyseven years old and my hands get a little stiff at times,so this wider neck should help.I'm an old rocker that can still jam with the best and this U.S.A. Gibson LP will keep me there.Thanks to Musicians Friend and all the guys who sent in the reviews.

Satin Gold Top/Black Back is a Winner.
Light weight win tons of sustain and sound.
Baked Maple give it a brighter sound and is beautiful too.
Pickup Combo is perfect for all music styles
Straplocks are a Must. Tuners are the only downside.
Locking Grovers are on the way.
Action/Setup was very good out of the box.
The guitar is a steal for the money. True Les Paul sound and look for less than $1000!!

Love this guitar! Excellent fit and finish, sounds as good as it looks. This is a basic Les Paul but it's a really nice guitar. Hard for me to put it down, I love the feel of it and the sound is perfection. If I could only have one guitar it would be this or something similar. Very fun to play!
