Comments about Gibson Limited Edition J-45 Figured Mahogany Special:
Just got mine today. Fit and finish are fantastic in this Custom Shop special edition. This is a loud guitar with great clarity and projection. The tone is amazing and it is powerful. The best Gibson I've played prior to this one was a nearly $4K 2017 J-45 Vintage (Adirondack). The Vintage is an amazing guitar, but this one seems louder with more clarity and chime. I also like the neck better on this one - little easier to get around. Little different tone too, but both sound amazing. I could go back and forth on which one sounds better - depends.
It has great string to string seperation and flat picking is effortless, but not so much separation that you can't strum it. The harder you strum it, the louder it gets and the better it sounds. Not so with all Adi topped guitars, but it is true with this one. I can finger pick it too, but have to use just a little more effort than when playing a Sitka top. Set up is very good, but I will have it lowered just a bit more.
Could not be happier! I've owned and had opportunities to play a lot of guitars - Martin, Taylor, Bourgeois, Collings, Gibson (had a J-29 for while), Huss and Dalton (almost got one of their slope shoulder dreads) etc. This one is rock solid, is on a par with the best of the best, sounds exactly like it should (big, loud, crystal clear, yet focused and punchy), looks great with the ultra smooth open back lightweight tuners (smoother than the Waverly's on my Martin) and the abalone inlays are just enough to set off the rest of the top. Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of fit and finish issues with 2015 and 2016 standard Gibsons, but NO issues here.
Pretty much the perfect all around guitar that does it all. If you play light finger style almost exclusively, you might want to look elsewhere, but otherwise, you can't go wrong with this one.
