A Tone Machine to Open Your Own Doors of Perception

During his time with The Doors, and beyond, Robby Krieger proved himself one of the most inventive guitarists in rock. His lithe, flamenco- and jazz-influenced licks and solos took the electric guitar in directions that no other popular rock artist was exploring, and constituted one of the main ingredients in a band that stood out as totally unique not only in its own time, but for all time. And throughout his career, Krieger chose a Gibson SG Standard to launch his sonic explorations. In joint celebration of this ground-breaking guitarist’s vast achievements and the 50th Anniversary of the Gibson SG, Gibson USA presents the 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG, an instrument painstakingly crafted in the image of the great ‘60s SGs that Krieger made his own. With all the classic ingredients of the model, a pair of humbucking pickups with phase switching, and a Maestro Vibrola with vintage-style “Lyre” tailpiece, this guitar is primed to help you break on through to your own creative revolution.

To give the 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG the best possible tonal foundation, Gibson USA uses all Grade-A tonewoods, and crafts the instrument in the image of the finest SGs to emerge 50 years ago. Its solid mahogany has the asymmetrical “double-horned” deep double-cutaway design, which exudes tonal richness and depth, with plenty of clarity and sustain. Coupled with the SG’s characteristic beveled edge—a big part of this model's distinctive styling—the mahogany’s light weight also enhances playing comfort, and the fine grain of the Grade-A timbers used beneath the transparent Heritage Cherry nitrocellulose finish looks superb, too. The guitar’s quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved in a slim but rounded profile that measures .800” at the 1st fret and .895” at the 12th. It is glued into the body with Gibson’s acclaimed deep set-neck joint, and topped with a Grade-A rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and vintage cream binding. And to give this SG the special treatment it deserves, the back plate covering the controls is adorned in Robby Krieger’s own musically themed artwork, while a 50th Anniversary graphic on the headstock declares the guitar’s pedigree.

To give this instrument all the tone of the originals, Gibson USA gives the 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG a pair of the most accurate PAF-styled humbuckers available today. The 57 Classics in the neck and bridge position are made with genuine Alnico II magnets, and wound with 42-AWG enamel-coated wire just like the originals, but are wax potted to combat microphonic squeal for high-volume playing. And for added versatility, a push-pull pot on the rhythm pickup’s tone control provides funky phase-reverse switching. A Maestro Vibrola tailpiece gives this SG supreme performance versatility, while a traditional Lyre plate tops off its accurately retro look. A Tune-o-matic bridge with allen-key height adjustment keeps your intonation true, aided by a set of Kluson-style tulip-button tuners installed at the other side of the PLEK-cut Corian nut. Add it up, and the 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG is a stunning trip back in time to the age of the original SG Standards, and a fitting tribute to one of the most inventive guitarists of the ‘60s. Each guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case and owner’s manual, and is covered by Gibson’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service.

    Features

    • Solid Mahogany body with high-gloss Heritage Cherry finish
    • SlimTaper™ neck profile
    • Pair of powerful Alnico II '57 Classics pickups

We'll forego the qratuitous reference to a Doors song here and simply encourage you to order this fine guitar right now.

Comments about Gibson Limited Run 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG Electric Guitar:

I wanted a perfect guitar and this fit my bill. Had to send 2 guitars back to MF due to terribly poor workmanship that Gibson Quality Control let get out of the factory. Broke my heart. Fussy guitar, wouldn't stay in tune if the tremelo was used at all. Strings pinging and binding at the nut, frozen push pull switch. Sadly, my lust for a Gibson didn't work out. Can't have an unreliable guitar. My first experience with Gibson makes me re think buying one.

Comments about Gibson Limited Run 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG Electric Guitar:

Immaculate instrument from top to bottom. Though some have complained about the price, I'd have to say this shapes up to be a great investment in the long haul, since it is a limited edition. The 1st electric I ever bought was a MIJ knock off that I sold to the cousin of a famous rocker when times were hard. He had the last laugh, as those 70s MIJ SGs were great build in quality and hold collector's value as well. But this-this is the real deal everybody.

Nostalgia or not it's a great Guitar!

        By Brian Barton

        from Wisconsin

Comments about Gibson Limited Run 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG Electric Guitar:

This SG is an immaculate reissue of the very same SG I bought in 1970. The tone is amazing and the playability is even better than I remembered. Compared to my Les Paul Classic it has an all around better tone, clarity, punch when you need it - all around better guitar. OK, so it brings back memories of a great time in my life and I maybe viewing it through a psychedelic time warp, but I love this guitar!
Considering I paid $416 for this very same guitar in 1970, (according to my inflation calculator that would be $2309 in 2010 dollars) the price tag was reasonable.

        Robby Krieger SG

        By Mojo D

        from Undisclosed

Comments about Gibson Limited Run 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG Electric Guitar:

This is an excellent guitar, well worth the money. The humbuckers have a broad range of sounds all the way from a very muddy tone to a very bright tone. The humbuckers are very responsive to tone and volume adjustments. The playabitlity and intonation of the guitar are outstanding. The neck is quite slim, and there are no fret buzzes. The tailpiece works pretty well however it needs to be tightened occasionally. Eventhough the guitar has a vibrato it still manages to retain good sustain. The phasing knob (push pull) has very subtle, but noticible afffects on the tone. The frets are comfortable to play on and are comparable to those of a Standard Stratocaster. Overall this guitar is an excellent buy for a broad range of musical styles

What the Gibson SG Standard should be

Comments about Gibson Limited Run 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG Electric Guitar:

It's unfortunate that you have to pay this much to get a Gibson SG that sounds and plays as good as this. This type of playability and sound should be standard. It's a great guitar but not worth the price. I played it and it's an awesome guitar but I would rather buy a cheap Ibanez RG or Fender and modify it before buying a Gibson SG for this amount. P.S. The Maestro tremolo doesn't go out of tune so bad if you stretch it enough prior to wailing on it.

        not worth the money, really....

        By jonathan pratt

Comments about Gibson Limited Run 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG Electric Guitar:

nice guitar if you like to pay way to much for the name.
it sounds way to trebley for humbuckers, the frets are like running your fingers over speed bumps, it doesn't stay in tune and last, it didn't even come with the Roby Kreiger painted back plate!
contacted Gibson USA about it twice and got no responce.
contacted a dealer and they said they contacted Gibson and Gibson will contact me directly and send me the right back plate.....still waiting.
oh yeah, when you close it in the case it depresses the vibrato bar down and causes the plastic handel to fracture from the pressure of the case holding it down.
the Meistro vibrato goes out of tune if you look at it wrong.
the coil tap or outta phase or whatever it is buzzes like a swarm of killer bees.
the frets are murder for a Fender or Mosrite player like me....
        good materials and great finish!
looks cool but that's about it.
well, it's not worth the price in my opinion.

Gibson 50th Anniversary Robby Kreiger SG Electric Guitar

        By MICHAEL MCGOVERN

from Kansas City - Bat Rastardz

Comments about Gibson Limited Run 50th Anniversary Robby Krieger SG Electric Guitar:

Finally, Breaking on Through to the Other Side! I purchased my original Gibson SG w/ Maestro Vibrola in 1969. The Doors were my number one band and Robbie Kreiger my favorite guitarist. My SG was stolen in the early 1990s. Since then, I've been using an Epiphone replica SG for the past four years - a beautiful guitar, but not quite a Gibson. I have been looking and waiting over three years to replace it, but the Gibson's Kreiger SGs were not even close to my price range. The new 50th Anniversary Kreiger SG is my dream come true. The quality of the of the overall guitar reminded me of my original SG - superb! I had noticed in the 90's the quality of the Gibson workmanship had diminished, but this 50th Anniverary is the real McCoy. I am very pleased with the action of the slim taper neck, the sound of the Alinco II '57 Classic pickups, and the overall classy workmanship. I'm at awe everytime I pick it up and play it at practice or at a gig. It sure beats owning a recliner!
