OVERVIEW

A mahogany body, 490R/498T humbuckers and '50s rounded neck the belie its low price.

The LPJ offers all the ingredients that made the most desirable Les Paul Standards legendary—classic tonewoods, innovative hardware, two genuine humbucking pickups, and of course Gibson’s acclaimed build quality and playability—all wrapped up in a stripped-down, no-nonsense package that makes this guitar a flat-out performer. Simpler esthetics and a cool worn-look finish technique add up to big savings for the player, and the LPJ still looks great.

The most revered Les Paul Standards ever made had bodies constructed of a mahogany back with a two-piece carved maple top, and the LPJ begins with these same cornerstones of tone. When paired, these woods offer a tonal depth and complexity unmatched by any single-wood construction, with warmth and richness from the mahogany, and superb clarity and “snap” from the maple, all of which translates beautifully into the guitar’s amplified sound. The mahogany back is strategically weight relieved to improve comfort and enhance resonance.

A neck made from hard-wearing maple is glued into the body, and carved to our popular rounded 50s profile that measures .818” at the 1st fret and .963” at the 12th. It is topped with a genuine rosewood fingerboard that carries 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays. There’s no pickguard or fingerboard binding to clutter the straight-on, stripped-down look of the LPJ, while quality touches continue with a PLEK-cut nut made from black Corian™ to subtly echo the black speed knobs and black pickup rings and covers. The traditional back-angled headstock is silkscreened with a gold Gibson logo that stands out clear and proud.

A pair of Gibson’s popular Modern Classics™ humbucking pickups fire up the LPJ through your amp of choice. Made in the image of the legendary PAF humbucker and modified to suit the needs of the contemporary guitarist, the set includes a 490R in the neck position, made with an Alnico II magnet and standard-wound coils for plenty of warmth and clarity, and a 498T in the bridge position, with over-wound coils and an Alnico V magnet for more punch and sizzle in your lead playing.

An independent volume and tone control per pickup plus a three-way toggle selector switch allows a broad range of sonic variations, while Gibson USA’s legendary Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece ensure solid sustain and outstanding intonation. A set of vintage-style tuners with black keys provides an impressive 16:1 gear ratio for precise and efficient tuning. Put it all together, and the new LPJ is the fastest road to a genuine Les Paul, sparing none of the tone, while putting the legend in your hands with far less load on your wallet.

Each guitar includes a black Gibson gig bag, owner’s manual and truss-rod wrench.

Comments about Gibson LPJ Electric Guitar:

This guitar looks and sounds great. I have the fireburst finish and it just looks different enough to catch everyone's eye.

The sounds you can get out of this are classic Les Paul. I cannot say enough about how great it sounds. The pickups are first rate, the electronics are solidly dependable and the rest of the hardware pulls everything together really well. You will not be disappointed when you plug this guitar in to your favorite amp and let it rip.

BUT. Be careful of the satin finish. There is no coat of lacquer to protect the finish and it will scratch or rub off fairly easily. Certainly more easily than other Gibson finishes. You'll need to use a little TLC. I store my guitars on hanging stands, and I noticed two dots at the base of the headstock where the finish wore off - just from storing the guitar that way. Not an issue on any other guitars I own, so...

If you can be careful with the finish, this is one great guitar. Especially for the price.

Comments about Gibson LPJ Electric Guitar:

I got this in the goldtop version on sale.Really nice playing and sounding guitar. I really like the minimal finish on it. The pickups are OK but I did not care for the bridge position or the fact that they had black plastic covers on them , Made them look like a pair of emg's. I replaced them with chrome covered rio grande custom pickups. It sings so well now.I like it better than the LP's that go for three or four times the cost. This one is a keeper!! Thanks Gibson!

Comments about Gibson LPJ Electric Guitar:

I recently acquired one of these little gems. The nice 490 series pickups are hidden behind the black plastic covers but they play very well and have great tone. I find the neck pickup to be more pleasing but that is subjective. Mine has the vintage finish and its nice - if a bit subdued. I set mine up with 11's and after a few tweaks it sounds fantastic. I have the 2013 model and for an American made Les Paul on a budget its a great instrument. There are a ton of other fine guitars in this price range but its a great guitar for the money.

Comments about Gibson LPJ Electric Guitar:

After doing a bit of online research I decided to go for the goldtop version. The finish is nice, better looking in person. The neck is fast and feels good, nice fretwork. Pickups sound about the same on the bridge as my Epi custom, but a bit more bass and not as much bite in the middle position and neck. I'll probably be changing the pots out as they roll off very quickly. Add some strap locks and this is a keeper. Very usable straight out of the box, but will mod easily. Feels very sturdy and has some weight to it. After a couple of weeks I like it even more. Gibson must have caught on because the newer models are priced higher! lol. Glad I got my goldtop while the price was right. Would have given 5 stars if the pots were better and strap pegs were a bit bigger. Overall I'm happy with it.

Comments about Gibson LPJ Electric Guitar:

Tried this model at my local music store,it caught my eye and the price was nice, it felt'non chambered'it had some weight to it,so I plugged it in being skeptical of the scaled down lps.
I have owned black customs, gold tops, and studios, and let me tell you, this is right up there with them.
The stores only serve as a testing ground for me, as buying from MF is the best way to go.

The tone is what you would expect from a lp,the pickups are gibson, not too hot just enough bite , really shines thru my kustom and bugera tube amps.
I like these pickups better than the burstbuckers in my mahogany studio.I play all styles from light jazz to shedding metal, and this thing is excellent.

The midnite finish has really grown on me,it has a class all its own.

The neck in your hands, feels great, tells you its a solid axe.

As with any guitar you may want to tweak the set-up to your style, but this one is light years ahead, out of the box, compared to my studio.

If youve been aroud the block like I have, you will appreciate this axe and the price!
buy it beore Gibson catches on!

Comments about Gibson LPJ Electric Guitar:

The neck and feel of this guitar is about as good as it gets. It's a pleasure to pick up and play on for hours at a time. The satin finish is very nicely done and I prefer it to glossy finish. The hidden cutaways make the guitar surprisingly light to handle, but yet the sustain is great.

The negatives for me are the pickups and wiring. The 490R and 498T pickups are colder and thinner sounding than what I'm used to, so I replaced them with dirty fingers pickups and rewired it to vintage 50s with 500k pots and .022uf orange drop caps. After making this initial modification this is the best sounding guitar I have ever owned and has very rich tones! I love this guitar!

Comments about Gibson LPJ Electric Guitar:

My last Gibson was a 67 Melody Maker and the LPJ is far beyond that. The finish grows on me more every time I pick it up. The neck is especially one of the things that make this a winner, with
the 50's rounded profile. I've more than a few Epiphone's and although they are each special to me, I think I'll be saving for another Gibson...

I bought this guitar during a labor day sale and with all the discounts it ended up costing less than 1/2 it''s retail price including a hardshell case....what a beautiful instrument...the finish is non lacquered and is stunning and really gives it a unique look...played great right out of the box...I have always wanted a Les Paul to achieve tones you just can't get with anything else and this LPJ delivers....in spades...I have 2 strats and vintage Gibson L5S I bought new in 1970 (with low impedance pick ups for that fat jazz guitar sound)...this new LPJ really rounds out my arsenal...if you want a Les Paul and that Les Paul sound and don't want to spend a lot , this is the ticket...I am REALLY pleased with the service I received from my Musicians Friend rep and was surprised that shipping to Cancun Mexico only took 6 days !!!
