'60s SG vibe and feel fat, 57 Classic Humbucker sound.
Inspired by the 1960s SG Special, the Gibson SG Classic re-creates the look and sound of the most influential electric guitar in both Britain and the U.S. during the psychedelic era.
This Classic Custom model brings that awesome axe back again with a twist: Instead of P-90 pickups, it's loaded with a '57 Classic Humbucker at the bridge and a '57 Plus Classic humbucker at the neck. Stadium-ready tone comes from the amazing '57 humbuckers that dictated a whole generation of rock 'n' roll sound. Alnico II magnets, vintage enamel-coated wire, nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers, and 2-conductor braided wiring make these true vintage heavyweights that dish out creamy clean tones, screaming sustain, and gravelly crunch. It has the original all-mahogany body and a bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays. Gold hardware adds a final touch of class. Limited Run of 400.
A Little SG History
In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that making the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

Bought one locally a couple weeks ago. Color is much nicer than the pictures show. More of a dark 'vintage' cherry like the late 60s Customs. The above description is wrong on two counts, one is obvious. The inlays are block, and the fretboard is ebony.A little pricey for an SG, but if you're after an ebony board and bound headstock of the custom this option is a 1500 or so cheaper than the custom shop SG Customs.Mine was set up very nice out of the box, I restrung with 009s, loosened the truss a 1/4 turn and lowered the action a bit. It flies now, the neck profile is great. I did swap out the gold truss cover for a plain black one, but that's a personal preferance. I love the 57 Classics in this guitar (plus at the bridge) the neck pickup is a bit more articulate than the average LP so it's great for early Clapton type stuff. The bridge sounds great overdriven rock all the way to high gain metal.
