A lighter SG with tonal cut to match its sharp looks.

The single P-90 pickup at the bridge of this Gibson SG JR P-90 Electric Guitar generates a more edgy yet still full-bodied tone that calls to mind Pete Townshend. The mahogany body and set mahogany neck generate great resonance for increased sustain. Wine red is the ultimate SG finish.

In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that making the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new model was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

Well, I gave it a 10 on features, because, It has everything I wanted for this particular guitar. Yes... it's bare bones. But that's the beauty of it. As other reviewers have said, p-90's have there own flavor and personallity. I was really quite supprised at the quality of the finish. The action was a tad high and I changed the 010's to 009's. The frets were dressed properly with no sharp edges. This guitar works great for slide work as well as soloing. The only complaint I have... Gibson not including a hard shell case with it. Come on guys..That's cheap. Other than that, It plays and sounds like a guitar that would cost twice the price. It's not quite as fat as a Les Paul Junior but has better presence. This guitar would be a great addition to anyone's guitar collection. Buy One Now!!!

its ok nothing special here just a bare bones sg jr but thats what i like about it. Hey lets face it quality control is not good at gibson and the stuff the pump out these days is nothing compared to the old stuff the fret work is average and the nut slots almots always need smoothing out with proper nut files so they dont ping and hold the strings up .work out the bugs and you have a cool guitar . but i would expect on having to take it in to get fret work and the nut worked on for a smooth player with this and any gibson

    Simple machine, Fierce sound

    By PLMD

For the price, you can't beat this baby. Perfect construction and set-up - frets, tuners, bridge, nut, body, intonation, action, etc. all spot on. Flawless deep wine red finish. And the sound rocks - tight, focused, and punchy - the p90 blends the best of humbucker and traditional single coil pickup without the mushiness of two coils buts it ups the muscle and pop of a single. High output for sure, sounds best with gain lower and overdriven from the master. Rolling back volume cleans it up nicely. Tone control very responsive. Nice gig bag too. I did not expect much for this price, especially from gibson, the leader in overpriced guitars, but this delivers. Excellent guitar for all variety of rock from pop to classic to alt to punk. Great deal!

    Quality in its Simplicity

    By matt potasky

Gibson Sg JR reissue. This guitar is one of the best reissues Gibson has done. The minimal features are astounding in their diversity. The P-90s range with just a volume and tone nob are great. The neck isn't a horrible rock; it's full and comfortable. Low action that's real smooth. The finish is really beautiful (in comparison to say that weird looking faux vintage finish on things like the faded series). This guitar is a great work horse. Far more versatile than a lot of guitar with more complicated features like two humbuckers or more than two nobs. This isn't one of those "gibson in name onlys" like the new melody makers or any of the faded series guitars. this is the real thing.

An avrage guitar for an avrage price

This guitar is ok. The neck was nice and it felt solid but is very limited because it is only one single coil pickup. If you like that sound this guitar is for you!

    BRILLIANT

    By up.the.punx

I play alot of old skool punk, and hardcore punk (iggy pop, and the ramones type old skool, and casualties, and monster squad type hardcore), and this kicks a**! I really didnt want an SG, cuz almost every emo band plays one, but I saw this one, and decided to spend my cash one it. It isn't like other SG's. It only has one pickup, and its got a P-90 pickup which soundz better than other pickups. And it looks good in that wine colour. I put a few stickerz, and it looks even better. I dropped it at a show, and it didnt even go out of tune. It's super light weight too, so you can jump around without it smashing into yer knees and shatterin em. Man this is a nice guitar.

    What a buy!

    By theitch

Unlike so many of the reviewers, I give this a 10 for features. When you buy the SG Jr. you are not buying it for bells and whistles. It plays great, stays in tune, and has a sound all its own with the single P-90. In fact I am very impressed with the compensated bridge, which is better intonated than my professionally set-up Les Paul. I give a 9 for quality, because it has some very minor finish flaws on the neck. Otherwise, it is beautiful.

    feel baby, feel

    By benso

This is my favorite guitar I've ever played. That said, there are some things to consider before buying. The tuning of this guitar is extremely finicky. I can jam for hours without retuning or I can strum one chord and it will fly out. It has a mind of it's own. So I jam on this at home and it truly amplifies my creativity because of the phenomenal pickup, and sustain produced by the wraparound tailpiece, but then I must play my gigs with my strat. Sad but true.

It's like 1962 All over again!!

    By 4and20

    from brooklyn ny

Okay - Here me now and believe me later....this guitar has the vibe feel and mojo of the originals of 40 plus years ago..I just got mine and after tweaking the set-up..it is flawless....all it needs is some playing to get it broken in but this guitar is the real thing...very much in feel and build just like the originals that I now see fetching 4, 5 6 grand and more for one in good condition...the only thing different on this model is they don't use the old school pickguard and dog-ear P-90 but I guess that's just a production isseu....there have been a lot of crummy lower budget Gibson's over the past few years..this isn't one of them.
