The quality of this guitar could not possibly get any better. I bought this guitar almost a year ago and have had absolutely no problems yet. It's sound and tone is excellent whether on clean or distortion, the neck and fretboard allow you to play quickly, with the deep cut you can access the high frets, it's lightweight and it therefore doesn't hurt your shoulders or wear you out on stage, and is very durable when it comes to getting beaten around. What more could you possibly expect? The only thing that I consider disappointing is that there are dot instead of trapezoid inlays which give it that classic look. If you must, you can get the trapezoids by getting a standard. Personally, I don't think it's worth the extra money. The only reason some reviews say to get the standard is for this reason, not for a difference in quality! And if you like the idea of having a hardshell case or coverings over the pickups which come with the standard, you can easily replace them for a few extra bucks and still save money! As I said earlier, I would just stick with getting the special. Get this guitar and I promise, you won't be sorry! A few extra tips: Get the heritage cherry, it really fits the best! And also keep in mind that this guitar will sound perfect, regardless of the style of music you play, although this guitar was truly meant to be a rocker!

I bought this guitar pretty early in my playing. Now 5 years later the guitar is still my favorite guitar for recording and gigging (I own 6 guitars). Look, there will always be someone that gets a factory defect and comes here to review it poorly. Check your guitar over. Play it for an hour. If you like the neck (Thicker than the SG Standard). You aren't going to go wrong here. Solidly built, its taken some mean falls since I've had it and the thing still plays like a dream.I switched out the bridge pickup for a duncan distortion. Which took this guitar to a whole other level. But I wouldn't say doing that is necessary, just my preference. Again if you tried the guitar and liked it in the store, you aren't going to be let down 5 years down the line. This still puts out an incredible tone.

Mine is the Special (NOT the faded model). I have never been a fan of the 50's neck profile since I have been using the same 60's neck Les Paul for many years now... BUT... the neck on this SG is totally comfortable and playable, I mean DREAMY playable! I love the Alnico II pickups since I prefer to get my distortion through my amp. The bottom line is that this is a very versatile guitar that is suitable to virtually any style of music. My only wishes is that it had coil splitting, at least on the neck pickup, and that it came with an actual hard shell case instead of a gig bag.

I can't ask for more, the Gibson SG Special is the greatest purchase that I have ever made. This instrument's tonability is nothing short of impeccable to my ears and taste of music. Note, despite the fact that I had to get locking grovers to keep this in tune, i'm quite a lucky 16 year old guitar player if I do say so myself and am proud of my instrument, period.

This guitar is heaven on strings. It's one of the best deals for a Gibson guitar I've seen in over a decade. And thats all I've seen. It's light, thin, portable, and perfect for blues, rock, and metal. I highly recomend this guitar...............SO BUY IT!!!!

the other guitarist in my band has this, and man, it sounds great, but i don't know how he plays it. it literally HURTS to slide up and down the fret. it does have either warm or crunchy sound depending on what pickup you have it on. painful is all i have to say

i played this SG at a show i played and i was first stoked to be playing a Gibson but then i noticed that the pickups sound horrible with distortion.the finish was ruff and flat. the tuners felt like the came off an Epiphone Les Paul 100.Over all for the same price i would get an epiphone les paul custom sliver burst like i have and replace the pick ups.

After several looks and plays at the local music store, I finally got an SG Special. I'm a Gibson guy by nature and find this guitar to be a little marvel. While I prefer and have the 60's style neck on the Les Paul and ES 335, this SG's fatter neck doesnt even come into play for me. Its fast, comfortable and I just love the ease of reach on the entire fretboard. Lightweight, yet solid feeling. I underestimated this instrument. I had read a review a while ago from someone stating they couldnt put it down. Well, Im here to tell ya, I feel the same way. It's becoming my guitar of choice for gigs. As I am used to Gibsons more premire and pricy instruments, I must admit, I may change out the pickups to tighten up the low end response. I am an articulate player and its the only fault I can think of here. In closing, this guitar has literally changed my playing perspective for the better. Get this guitar and buy your Paul later. You just might find you wont need one after you spend time with this special Special.

I have had this guitar for 10 years and it has been my baby ever since. I have played pretty much everything, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Absolutely awesome guitar. Stays in tune better than any other guitar I've had, super comortable neck, screaming pickups. I even had it tattooed on my arm I love it so much!

Recieved this as a gift about 4 years ago. It's the green/blue flip-flop finish, which is appearently not offered on this model anymore. Sounds really good, I switched out the pickups for SD SH-4, and SH-2, and the sucky stock Gibson tuners with Grovers. Huge improvement overall. Great guitar.
