I've heard many a time that every good musician has "that" guitar. The guitar that defines their sound, the guitar that they pick up and are instantly comfortable with, the guitar that makes you enjoy playing music and makes you want to better yourself just through owning it...for me, this is "that" guitar.

For me, everything about this guitar has an aura of perfection and craftsmanship. From the top of the headstock, to the neck, pick ups, electronics....everything is exactly the way a guitar should be made. Not to forget, the finish is also stunningly beautiful (I bought the Honey Burst).

I would recommend this guitar to absolutely anyone , suffice they have the funds to purchase it. Easily the best guitar I've ever played.

Hard to put down once you pick it up! This guitar is extremely versatile, but really shines in the Hard Rock, Southern/Country Rock, Blues genres.

The setup was good, just needed a few minor adjustments.

Quality is exceptional.

I've always hated reviews by people who just received the guitar that day. Well... I'm writing one now. I'm completely infatuated with this guitar. I got the honey burst, and it is beautiful. A very welcome variation. Perfect finish. Very nice grain. Near perfect setup. The neck is slimmer than my '07 Standard. I can get used to it though. The coil tap is really, really great. Does it sound like a Strat? No, and I don't care. But it does get some wonderfully scooped tones without a whole lot of output loss. The standard TKL case is always nice too. Mine came with white fuzz. Very cool. The only down side to this guitar is that I'll probably waste time keeping it clean because it's just that nice to look at.

Bought this guitar for the versatile split coil option. Didn't dissappoint. The neck and feel is great. It has the slim neck of a 62 model SG. Had it professionally set up to my liking which everybody should do anyway. The Kluson tuners are also a nice upgrade. Stays in tune perfectly! Just so you know....Pickups were supposed to be 490R/498T but mine came with a Burstbucker 1 and 3 in it curiously enough. No big deal for me but it might be for some. I had already planned to replace them with an Angus Young in the bridge and a 57 classic in the neck which before purchase anyway and glad I did. I love the combination.

I've played and owned all the big name guitars and in the end decided that IMO Fender Strats and Gibson SG's are the most "playable" guitars. Feel great, look great, sound great. Les Paul looks great, sounds great, but the thick neck joint prevents me from getting to the higher frets comfortably.

I debated between this model and a standard SG. Just to do due diligence I also threw an Epi G-400 in for comparison but knew within 10 seconds there was no comparison. Anyway, this model of SG plays wonderfully. Mine was setup great. The neck plays fast and gives you very easy access to the upper frets. The pickups are clear as a bell and take to an overdriven amp like angels singing, but I LOVE AC/DC type bluesy overdrive without the face-melting level of distortion. You'll get that with this guitar no matter what you plug it into.

The coil tapping works very well. I don't forsee me using it regularly but it does what it's supposed to. Thin's up the sound to a single coil, very Fender'esque.

I would have loved a standard SG too but for the extra $100 I do believe this is worth. I also happen to love the zebra pickups, just a preference.

This thing will give you everything you want from an SG with a little extra. It's a great guitar. One that will have a permanent place in my collection (no sale or trade) and for you lifelong sufferers of G.A.S. you know that permanent spots in the collection are reserved only for the best.

I play a lot of power chords, and yet I find this guitar has subtle tones and I see myself getting better by playing notes I used to avoid on other guitars, just because it sounds so nice.

If it weren't for the crappy QC on the build quality for fit and finish, this guitar would be a full-on 10 on a 10 scale. But all is forgiven based on the sound this guitar can produce. The sound and the tone of the pickups and the sustain on this guitar is about as good as it gets.

SO- this SG is a keeper,,,, (and I am VERY picky when it comes to guitars!)

I have a Fender California Fat-Strat that I also happen to love, but the Gibson SG may end up as my favorite axe.

My Les Paul may just collect dust in the case...
Coil Splitting is nice, however I'll not be needing it much since I peg the dials to 10 on both sides and let it rip...

The tuning pegs are nice, I like vintage looks..

I love the jack inputs on the front, I think it's wrong and sad that Gibson LP's weren't updated to get that patch cord in a position where it doesn't get pinched all the time.

The pick guard is large, which I need since I play a lot of power chords. The finish would be ruined in no time without it.

The strings were tuned, and the neck seems to be totally playable. I have purchased other guitars from Gibson that were thrown together and never touched by the techs who built them, yet they still managed to have the gall to put a check list and a signature in the box to claim they did something when they never did. So it was nice to have a guitar that someone at the factory actually seemed to care about this time.
I'm taking away points for fit and finish. The paint is so soft that if you so much as rub off the dust with a soft cloth to play the thing it will scratch the finish- badly.

I wanted to clean and polish this guitar, but if I ever had to do it all over again with a new guitar I would wait at least 6 months to touch the thing. As it is, the finish already looks well used, and this guitar is brand new...and I was s u p e r careful with the polishing. The scratches will always be there.

The other thing are the body cutouts, It looked on this one like they used a rat-tail file rather than a milling machine to carve the body on a section, and while that is somewhat of an exageration,,,, it still looks like poop if you look at the cutouts at the right angle, and that it a disapointment.

The body has a lot surface imperfections on the back with wavy surfacing prep... I know it's just because Gibson is making these guitars as fast as they can in order to make a profit rather than to make a fine quallity investment quality instrument. IE: - check out a Gretch some time if you want to see a noticable effort to manufacture a quality guitar with excellent quality control and fit and finish. I maybe buying one of them soon..

However- this SG has a saving grace.. it sounds so nice, I really don't care. This thing rips...!!
I don't care what a guitar looks like as long as it can deliver the goods, and this is where the SG shines.

The pickups are hot, with incredible tone. The surprising thing for me is the sustain I can get from this guitar. I figured with the smaller lighter body it would not sound as nice as my Les Paul. But man, was I mistaken, this is one of the best sounding guitars I have ever played.

I am going to go overall of 9. Keep in mind that this rating is relative to the price point. I am very happy with it now and it continues to grow on me.
I am going with an 8 rating for features, mostly because of the pick-ups and the neck. The 490Rs and 498Ts are some nice hot pick-ups. I love the big signal I get out of these, regardless of whether I am at the neck, bridge or middle positions. Plus, the tone controls are clean and responsive.

The neck is very playable and fast, although I am having to get used to the longer scale after using mostly PRSs and Fenders. The fit and finish on the neck is top notch. Gibson really has this down with the joints between the frets and binding smooth and seamless. As advertised, the cutaway gives the player complete and unobstructed access to the upper register. However, I do find that my wide leather strap does partially jut out into that big open space created by the cutaway. This is because of the location of the strap button being on the back heel of the neck joint. Not a big problem though.

The other two features worth mentioning would be the coil taps and the vintage-type Kluson tuners. So far, I have not gotten any mind-blowers out of the single coil settings, but it is early in the game. The Klusons are cool from a tradition standpoint, but maybe not the best choice for you full-octave string benders.
The quality is very good. Fit and finish are excellent for the price range (better than Fender). I wish the cherry stain was a little lighter to allow more of the wood grain to show through. Still, I am pretty sure it is going to look good under the lights. So far, the pots are clean and responsive and per above, the pick-ups are top notch. It was easy to set up for my string weight and preferences. Overall, it sounds and plays great, which is what counts.
Excellent guitar for the price. I have always wanted an SG and I am glad I finally got this one.
