Gibson's legendary SG Standard now equipped with P-90 pickups.
Gibson's stylish and toneful SG has been a classic ever since its arrival on the scene in 1961. Its status as the replacement for the Les Paul was only temporary (it was referred to as the Les Paul until 1963, when it became merely the SG), but its position as a rock icon was permanent. By the mid '60s, the SG was the favorite of countless rock and blues artists, and was seen in the hands of Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana, and Robby Krieger, to name but a few. To celebrate this rock classic, Gibson USA introduces an SG Standard now featuring P-90 pickups.
Just like all great SGs of the past five decades, the Gibson USA SG Standard P-90 has a body crafted from solid mahogany in the asymmetrical "double-horned" deep double-cutaway design. A light and supremely resonant wood, mahogany gives this guitar outstanding tonal richness and depth, with plenty of clarity and sustain. Coupled with the SG's characteristic beveled edge—a big part of this model's distinctive styling—the mahogany's light weight also enhancing playing comfort. A solid mahogany neck is carved in a rounded profile, glued into the body with Gibson's acclaimed deep set-neck joint, and topped with a bound torrified maple fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets. In the hardware and electronics departments, the SG Standard P-90 is locked and loaded in legendary style.
A pairing of its Tune-o-matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece offer the solidity and sustain partnered with precision intonation adjustment that have made this equipment the industry standard since Gibson president Ted McCarty conceived them in the mid '50s. At the headstock end, a set of Grover vintage-style tuners offer efficient performance. To take all this tonal goodness to your amp of choice, the guitar's two P-90s are made with genuine Alnico V magnets and 42 AWG wire just like the originals, to give you that famous P-90 bite and grind. Warm and smooth in the neck position, fat and punchy in the bridge position, these are thicker sounding than your average thin single-coil pickup, and have become a favorite of players in all genres, from blues, to roots, to metal, to good old rock 'n' roll.

P-90s are silly loud, but not crazy hot. Had to dial back the amp significantly. Fit and finish are all great. Maple fretboard is great. I was initially disappointed that this one has a four piece mahogany body, but the pieces are really well matched. It's really resonant unplugged. Neck isn't as thin as a '60's thin taper, but it's thinner than a 50's profile and a lot smaller than the faded series.
I'd write more, but I'm practicing windmills.

This is a very comfortable guitar to your hands, body and ears. You can dial in almost any sound you want, from soft tele-like tones to out of phase strat sounds(middle switch position, volumes at 5-7 on both pickups) to full on blues or rock. The P-90s really deliver, harmonics everywhere. Set up was dead on right out of the box. Easy to play, smooth frets, very close action, clean electronics. Gibson nailed it. The baked maple fretboard just needed a bit of orange or lemon oil to tone down the dryness. It's the only guitar you'll need for almost any situation. Plug in to your favorite tube amp or play unplugged, just purrfect...very attractive in person, pictures do not do it justice.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I sold a '74 SG back in the early 80s and been kicking myself ever since. I now have redemption! This guitar is killer!! I thought the baked maple might be a detractor, but on the contrary I believe it adds to the P90 vibe. Beautiful ringing chimes to down and dirty rock and blues. This guitar is the most versitile I own. Setup was PERFECT right out of the box. Fit and finish (Heritage Cherry) are perfect as well. I can not find a flaw anywhere. What an incredible vaue for the price. Also own Strat, LP, DeArmond. I think we may have a new #1 !!

Either you love P 90's or hate them. For me it's the best of both worlds. I have a Les Paul std and a Strat and Tele. With the P90 you have both. You need to spend time dialing in the tone you want, then go for it. It's a Gibson, and they shine. Again try one, you will know.
