Gibson

The classic Gibson SG Standard revamped for 2013.

The light bulb. Television and radio. The microwave oven. Gibson's SG Standard — all inspirations of genius that transformed the way we live. Gibson's redesign of the Les Paul in 1960 was a bold move. But it paid off big time. It announced a new, radical electric guitar design for Gibson, and the world. It also inspired a rebellious generation of ideas and music rarely experienced before, and certainly not since.

Today, that same radical design – and restless spirit – lives on in Gibson's celebrated SG Standard. The redesigned 2013 SG Standard pays tribute to this revolutionary guitar. This guitar boasts all of the classic SG appointments including a double-cutaway mahogany body, slim mahogany neck, bound rosewood fretboard and Gibson’s ’57 Classic humbucking pickups for pure vintage-style bite. Plus, now all SG Standard models feature the original, smaller pickguard with tenon cover for the ultimate vintage-inspired look. It's all there, in all its original glory. Transform your playing. Revolutionize your life. Buy the 2013 Gibson SG Standard today and experience your own uprising firsthand.

Features

  • Mahogany body
  • 24.75" Scale SG slim mahogany neck
  • Bound rosewood fretboard with trapezoid inlays
  • Chrome tune-o-matic bridge

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar:

it`s been a while since I bought a Gibson product, my past experiences have been less than steller with them in the QC dept. I recently decided to try out the new 2013 SG standard because I missed my historic pelham blue stinger SG reissue, I figured I would take a chance and order one from MF and I`m glad I did! the guitar arrived safely packed and the set up was almost perfect
(I`m a guitar repairman so I can`t leave well enough alone!)
the build quality is leaps and bounds better than the stuff I`ve seen in the past, nut was cut perfect/everything was aligned correctly just a great feeling/playing SG the 57 PU`s are a perfect match for this guitar as well
in fact I`m not changing a thing! however Gibson still needs to pay more attention to their finishes..granted this one is black but the actual wood under the paint could be more flat if you ask me..but hey what do ya expect..it`s a Gibson!

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar:

I've always been a Les Paul fan but after a number of years fighting the 50's neck on my 2007 Standard, I decided it was time to make a move. My hands are relatively small and I had to work so hard at playing cleanly on the LP, I simply didn't enjoy playing.

My first Gibson, in 1978, was an SG Standard in Walnut. It was a great guitar but at the time, I didn't really have a frame of reference. 35 years later, I'm back with the SG! I went to a local guitar shop to scope out some guitars and after trying a LP with a 60's profile neck, I reluctantly grabbed an this SG Standard in Heritage Cherry. I knew within 3 minutes that THIS was my guitar.

My hand rests comfortably just behind the bridge on the strings and the neck is just super-fast. My first rehearsal with this guitar was the most fun I've had playing in ages! I never realized how much work the LP was! I was ripping out some nice ascending and descending runs and nailing some nice pinch harmonics in a way that had the hairs standing up on the back of my neck.

The guitar is somewhat brighter than my LP but also, in some ways, "middier". The SG really has a tone all its own and I'm well pleased with the Classic 57s. I believe the guitar came with a hybrid set of strings as it appeared to have a .046 low E and .009 for the high E. I replaced them with a set of .010s, reset the intonation, lowered the action a bit and was ready to rock. The only negative is that I was just barely able to get the low E string intonated in that I had to move it as far back as it would go. I may end up turning the saddle around.

The initial set-up was actually quite good; the action was med to med low and the relief was right about where I like it. I would guess in the neighborhood of about .005-.007". Finish-wise, it really is perfect. I can't find any flaws. The neck binding is perfect, the frets didn't have any jagged edges, (Like so many of the cheaper Les Pauls, Studios, etc).

My only complaint is the tuners. I'm not a fan of Kluson "Deluxe"-style tuners; just never liked em. I know for a number of years the ratio was a dismal 13:1 which just isn't fine enough for me. I'm not sure what the current "TonePros" Klusons are, I'm guessing 15 or 16:1. That's what comes on this guitar.

Finally, one pleasant surprise is that they don't use the PCB in the control cavity! Should you decide to upgrade the pots, etc, you won't be stuck having to completely convert it back to discrete components in the control cavity. The existing controls have a good taper to them. I'm very pleased, as a matter of fact. I was expecting some sort of abrupt "shelf" in the taper of the pots but that isn't the case.

Oh yes, I really wish Gibson would stop buying ten cent capacitors and put some orange drops in their guitars. It's a small change that can make a huge difference.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar:

I decided to buy this guitar to really get into playing and start taking it more seriously. I looked around for years trying to find a fairly specific tone and once I heard this I knew I had to get one.

I am a huge fan of the 57 Classics and I love the neck. It is so much easier to play for long periods of time than the other guitars I have.

I would like to point out that my guitar is 100% flawless. The finish is a a dark ebony that is impossible to see through and the only thing even remotely close to a flaw in it is the very faint buff marks. Inlays and frets are perfect, no sharp edges, no signs of glue, and it was perfectly set up when I received it. The only thing I had to do was tune it because it was very slightly out of tune. Overall I am very pleased with this guitar all around.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar:

This is truly an awesome guitar. It sounds great, plays great, and looks great.......from a distance. I got one in black and I can still see the wood grain from about ten feet away. I also have an epiphone lp and used to own an epi sg in red. the quality for finish on an epiphone is ten times better (perfect). whereas on the Gibson, you can tell where the paint around the Gibson and holly logos is raised where the epi's are totally flush. plus my Gibson sg's body and the back of the headstock shows every pore of the mahogany. Gibson should be ashamed of this. other than that, I have a fair sized collection of fenders, gretsches, epiphones, and gibsons and I absolutely love the way my Gibson sg plays and sounds. looks aren't everything. If you want a fair sounding and beautiful guitar with great quality control, get an epiphone, gretsch, or fender. But if you want an AWESOME guitar (with some expected factory flaws) get a Gibson. I'm not trying to bash gibsons. They are just having quite a few complaints about their paint jobs. so do a lot of the best musical instruments in the world. I love my sg and would definitely recommend this guitar to any suitable musician.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar:

Was actually looking at lower model 61 SG tribute but did not like the neck. Tried this one a 2013 SG Standard and wow. Neck is extremely fast and the hum buckers scream great tone. Had to get used to the light weight but really feels nice. The smaller pick-guard makes this axe stand out, along with the narrower horns. Got the heritage cherry finish and it's beautiful. This guitar is so easy to play it's ridiculous. Would definitely recommend this guitar!!!
