OVERVIEW

A classic rocker with four exclusive new looks.

The SG Standard is an iconic design that is so good, so right, so rock-n-roll that it (temporarily) obsoleted the Les Paul model- 50 years ago. The SG Standard Limited is a classically appointed SG with all of the tone, features and playability of the original vintage model, but dressed in four stunning new finish options”Antique Cherry, Natural Burst, Cream and Vintage Sunburst”all in high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

The Gibson USA SG Standard Limited has a body crafted from solid mahogany in the asymmetrical "double-horned" deep double-cutaway design (Grade-A mahogany under the translucent 'burst and Cherry finishes). A light and supremely resonant wood, mahogany gives this guitar outstanding tonal richness and depth, with plenty of clarity and sustain. Coupled with the SG's characteristic beveled body edge”a big part of this model's distinctive styling”the mahogany's light weight also enhances playing comfort. The guitar's quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved to a rounded profile that feels superb in the hand. It is glued into the body with Gibson's acclaimed deep-set neck joint, and topped with a fingerboard of baked maple, a heat-treated wood with a dark, rich appearance, great durability and a clear tone. Acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, a mother-of-pearl headstock logo and holly inlay, and a traditional pickguard round out this eye-catching package.

To equip this guitar with equally legendary tone, Gibson USA loads the SG Standard Limited with a pair of its most popular humbucking pickups. The 490R in the neck position is made with an Alnico II magnet and wound to vintage specs for plenty of warm vocal tones with impressive clarity. The 498T in the bridge position has an Alnico V magnet for more punch, and a few more turns of coil wire for a hotter performance overall, giving you everything from meaty crunch to searing leads. Your tone is anchored by the classic pairing of a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, with a set of vintage-style TonePros„¢ tuners installed at the other side of the PLEK-cut Corian nut. Add it up, and the SG Standard Limited is one cooking slab of mammoth vintage mojo.

Baked Maple:
Aging maple through a œbaking process called torrefaction. The wood is kept at 200-300º F for a period of time until the wood knows it' no longer a tree; Moisture is restored under pressure. This makes the wood very hard, sonically œlive and extremely stable. The snappy sound of ebony, with the look of medium-brown pau ferro. Many boutique manufacturers are now using this because it improves the wood with no chemical treatment, it' environmentally friendly and is great for making better sounding and playing guitars!

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

I love everything about this SG except the Tulip tuners. I've never thought they were the best choice.
They hold tune ok I just prefer others.
I
recently bought this SG after sitting down and playing one. I had been struggling with choosing between the SG or an ES-330. I own the Rickenbacker 330 and several other models but just wanted to continue with my dream of growing my collection. If you're debating, maybe my opinion will help. The SG Standard is everything advertised. Not only does it have the variety of sound that the Les Paul delivers, it is a wonderful weight. Really effortless to play. The neck takes me back to the 60's when the width was just enough more to give you great separation on chording but tight enough for the solos. The action came close to perfection right out of the box although I changed the strings and made a few personal adjustments. The look of the guitar is classic. The pearl inlays were well done. No imperfections, and no blemishes. It was handled nicely in its construction. I'm completely satisfied with the choice and really impressed with the new Natural burst finish. If you're debating......don't lose any sleep. This is a great instrument and a fabulous addition to any collection. The price ain't bad either!

Gibson SG Standard Limited in Cream

By James Rickenbaugh

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

My favorite guitar to date. This SG is perrfect for me. The big neck makes leads easy and lightning fast shredding. the action is awesome. I can play Jazz,Rock-a-Billy, Metal, and Punk with this with ease... and of course it will do AC-DC... This is a very versatile guitar. It does anything I want it to do and sounds great doing it. When I pick it up and plug in, I end up playing it for hours...Its a pleasure to play.
I bought the SG Standard Limited in Cream. This guitar blows me away. I have alot of high end guitars, Les Pauls, Gretsch,USA Fenders and SG's... THis is my favorite guitar to play. The neck is super fast and the guitar is well balanced. The action came out of the box Awesome. This is the first guitar I've owned that didnt need a set up. I have a 61 reissue SG and I like this guitar more. It plays and feels better in my oppinion. Im going to buy another one in Natural Burst becaus i fear that the "Limited" means it wont be around for long. If you play SG's BUY THIS GUITAR.
The Quality is top notch and is more pleasurable to play than my 61' Reissue
This is a good price for the quality you are getting. I paid almost twice this for my 61' reissue.
Great guitars are not Cheap, and Cheap Guitars are not Great.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

I purchased the Vintage Burst model. the guitar a very classy looking instrument. I've allways wanted an SG but didn't want to settle for a black or red one. the frets are large and I like that, but the action wasn't good. after adjusting the truss rod and playing around with the bridge height I was feeling less than thrilled. finally I found a good luthier and had him level, crown, buff and polish the frets. now this guitar begs to be played. the original pickups were ok,(the neck pickup was terrible) so I installed burstbucker pros and that did the trick. since then this guitar will never leave my collection untill they put me in the ground. if you need an SG this is it, just make shure you know a good luthier to fix the frets like they should have been done from the factory. with the 400$ upgrades I give it 5 stars. without? just ok...

    Cream of the crop

    By Todd Linse

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

The thing that really stands apart from it's competitors is the craftmanship. This guitar is built really well and has a nice coating to protect the finish. I love the sound of this guitar. The body is solid mohagany and the neck is thick and solidly constructed. Maybe the biggest surprise is the quality of the pickups. The sound is great and is a definate keeper for many different genres of music. The pickups are hot but don't have too much distortion. I am very happy with this guitar and look forward to playing it for many years to come.
The Gibson SG has a lot of great qualities that I made me a fan. The fact that the controls are located at the bottom and out of the way of my fingers when I pick. The pickup switch is in a good position too. The neck is engineered well and in an efficient location. Most guitars it's hard to reach the 22nd fret but not in this one. The color is unique. The cream color is pretty and in my opinion looks better than the standard colors ie. ebony and red.
The thing about Gibson that takes some getting used to is the position of the bridge. It is a little bit lower than most guitars I have played ie. Fender. The guitar came in perfect condition with no blemishes in the finish. Also, it came with an exceptional guitar case. It has a hard shell and a very snug interior that keeps the guitar from moving around.
It's a great value. You get a lot of guitar for your money. Also, one can't go wrong with purchasing any of the Gibson guitars.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

I wanted a lighter version of my LP and this is as close I can find Not sure why the natural is listed as limited since I have had a couple before over the last few Years but whatever it's still very cool. Gibson makes superb guitars and I have owned and own many now and never any qc issues. I think that gets blown out of proportion on guitar forms by folks who don't own or can't afford the Gibson they really want.
I just got the Natural model and it's even better in person. Plays very smoothe and rips like my Les Paul but much lighter. I am actually considering selling one of my LP's now because of hoe uncomfy it has become and I have been a LP guy for many Years. The neck is a bit bigger and rounder than the 61's but even with smallish hands I find it more comfortable and less fatiguing to play. I must correct one thing the neck on the standard has the fatter rounder neck not the flatter, wider neck like the 61's and there is a big difference for those that are considering any SG model.
Not as neck heavy as other older SG's and a good strap solves this anyways. Built like a tank all hardware is shiny and durable. The frets are perfect and fret board is nice.
Not bad price for a USA made Gibby but I think it could be priced in the new Strat range would be better but overall can't complain.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

I ordered the Gibson SG Standard Limited Edition in Natural Burst a couple weeks ago. The natural finish is stunning! I was a little nervous about the baked maple fingerboard, but not anymore! It is a very smooth fingerboard, feels almost like the ebony on my Gibson Les Paul Custom. The SG is very balanced, and has some good body weight (not neck heavy). The 498T bridge p/u is nice and hot. The guitar has a bite to it that my LP really doesn't have. It doesn't resonate quite as much, but that doesn't bother me at all. I've owned several SG's in the past and I missed them, this one is hands down the best SG i've ever played. Les Paul's have their place, but the SG is called the "Solid Guitar" for a reason!

i got this guitar in natural burst. beautyfull. the guitar is almost flawless. it was set-up right out of the box. one of the most easy guitars to play. i have seen reviews that say the neck is fat, but i have small hands and i don't have any troubleplaying it.
        top notch
expensive, but worth it. A SG is a bargin as far as gibsons go.

        Very Nice

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

Overall, a great guitar. No picture could show you how beautiful and how well made this guitar is. It's a joy to play, good sounding, very light, easy action. The only thing I would change is to not have the plastic piping on the neck profiled to the fretwire ends. I would rather see the actual fretwire extend out to the necks full width, the plastic is a little slippery.
Excellent craftsmanship. I purchased the Natural Burst, absolutely beautiful. I like the shape of the neck, the action is nice and low, did have to raise it just a touch- buzzing strings on #6 and #5. Nice large fretwire. The pickups are good, a little mid-toned. This guitar is very, very light and has a nice balanced feel. I'm used to 25-1/2" scale and this being a 24-3/4" scale, it took a little while to get used to it. Good tone/volume knob setup, similar to my Les Paul.
Quality could not be any better. Well constructed, solid, beautiful wood grain, solid bridge. The baked maple fretboard seems to be very good, strings slide easy on it and it doesn't show any signs of indentation. The sound the guitar produces is very good along with the sustain.
Value, a little pricey and no discounts allowed from Gibson. But, Fender also doesn't allow discounts. So what's a guy to do? You pay the price and get the great quality and support that Gibson offers.

There isnt much else to say. ITS AWESOME.
The features of this guitar are superb, THe mahgoany used for the body of this guitar is superb, I had ordered the "Aged Cherry" finish, it too looks absolutly fantastic. the tuners on the guitar are solid, the only thing i can judge about this guitar are the pickups. THey are very very middy as gibson had stated about their 490r/498t pickups. those who dislike the guitar because of its fretboard should know that the torrified maple fretboard is in fact 9in my opinion) as good or if not better than rosewood. The features of this guitar are ROCK SOLID!
The quality of this guitar is absolutly terrific. The guitar is extremely well built and solidly put together. The tuners (though many ahve complained) are very good, they stay in tune very well. The mohagany used for this guitar is ofhigh quality and the quality.
This guitar is a terrific vaulue for what you are rpaying, it sounds great plays magnificintly and looks gorgeou.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

Love it! Buy one while you can!
I've had my Gibson SG Standard limited a couple of weeks now and absolutely love it! I am a Strat guy and own 4 Strats, but have no trouble transitioning to my SG. The controls are in approximately the same place and the tone of the humbucking pickups requires no tweaking on the amp between the Gibson and the Fenders. I've owned Les Pauls that would require twisting a few knobs on the amp to sound good when switching from a Strat.
The balance of the SG is perfect, like a Strat, when using a strap. The 12" radius neck and slightly shorter scale makes string bending effortless! The baked maple fretboard feels wonderful and is not an issue at all! One of my Strats has a maple neck, so I didn't think twice about the SG's maple neck being an issue! It's great!
The slim taper neck feels superb! I read some reviews on this very guitar complaining about a "fat neck"! Not even close to being fat! It's perfect!
The finish on my Natural Burst SG is fabulous! I considered the Vintage Sunburst but decided on the natural Burst since the V.S. is black on the back. I love the look of the mahogany on both sides.
It came with a cool contoured case with a snow white plush liner that is very cool!
I've been playing it every day since I got it!
I've read other reviews in the past few years complaining about Gibson's quality going down hill. Not so with this axe! Gibson must have put their best people on these guitars, because the quality is all around excellent! I'm the kind of guy that wouldn't say that unless I meant it, so BELIEVE IT!!
I've been playing for almost 50 years, so I'm still not used to the high price of quality guitars these days! That's why I rated a 9 on value! But I guess compared to some of Gibson's Custom Shop and Artist series guitars, this SG is a fantastic value! I don't see how they could have got it any better just from an artist endorsement or Custom Shop treatment!

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

The SG has always been classic, but the folks at Gibson really did something special with the SG Standard Limited. I always liked the look of the SG, but was never impressed with the finish options available. Black and Vintage Cherry never got me excited, but when I saw the Limited in Vintage Sunburst I was blown away. The finish and attention to detail on this guitar are amazing. The guitar is light and comfortable in every regard. The neck is wide, but very easy to play, even for someone with smallish hands. The baked maple neck is a gorgeous brown, with impeccable binding. The pickups roar and snarl like a beast, and make the guitar a blast to play. At a fraction of the cost of a Les Paul, this thing is a no-brainer. I would buy it again and again. Thank you Gibson.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

Always wanted an Sg due to my ongoing love affair with ACDC, Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard, but ironically have been mostly dedicated to Teles. I recently got a old Greco SG copy, which is a nice guitar, but I wanted the real thing. Got a mint used one in vintage cream. I was a bit worried, being a Tele player, having heard all the stories of fragile bendy diving necks and poor QC. Needn't have worried, this little beauty was perfectly set up (and in tune) right out of the box, with no cosmetic or other flaws whatsoever. Sings like a bird, light as a feather, beautiful inlays etc... winner!!

          What a fantastic guitar

          By Eric Rosenthal

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

I know the purists are cringing at the idea of using baked maple instead of rosewood but try it before you make your mind up. It indeed does have a smoother feel than rosewood but it's more like ebony than maple. The color is lighter. Mine looks more like pao ferro but the good news is a little lemon oil darkens it right up. The guitar does have a bit more snap to it than it's rosewood counterpart but a little roll back on the tone brings it back. All in all I like the baked maple board.
What can I say it's an SG. The only part I was unsure about was the baked maple fretboard but it is fantastic.
This thing is on par with my Gibson r7 I would say. The finish is flawless and the action is perfect. It is one of the better built gibsons I've seen.
Worth every penny. I have no doubt it will retain its value.

The quality of this guitar really surprised me - it is hard to believe this is an off the rack model - easy to play with a perfect neck, fantastic pickups that can work in a variety of material, and workmanship and looks that draw envious compliments.
The 490 pickups are very cool - the neck position is my favorite - very warm but with a strong bite when you dig in - while the middle position is an incredibly reliable position for chord work and fills with a balanced tone. The neck is a wow - the angle, the width, the comfort up and down the fret board... And the guitar is just plain eye candy - I have the cream, and the quality of the finish, the neck binding, the fingerboard are gorgeous . To come across this lovely and perfectly playable guitar has renewed my faith in Gibson!

This is my first guitar with the baked mapel, and it's not a problem at all. The neck is really snappy. I do have mutiple guitars; american made fenders, gibsons, rickenbackers, and i have to say this is now my favorite to play. Speaking of which, think I'm going to go play my new axe right now!!!!!!

i wash my hands before i touch this beautiful guitar. I bought the cream, love it. This SG is perfict right out of the box. From shreading leads to almost acustic sounds, it's a keeper. If i could only have one guitar, this would be it. Compared to a US made Fender I think this is the better buy. I still love my mex strat and tel. for the money the mex fenders can't be beat, but if you want a made in the USA guitar this is it.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

If you never played a guitar with a proper set-up this one is OK.
Action sort of high but not terrible.
                Intonation sucked.
Gibson QC card was unreadable (Fast Handwriting)which reflects the amount of QC that went into this Guitar.
All in all with a little tweaking this baby Roars

Comments about Gibson SG Standard Limited Electric Guitar:

This thing is sweet. I've always played a strat and always wanted an SG
I saw this natural burst and was drawn to it. I've never been this impressed
with a new guitar. It's beautiful, i love the chunky neck, and everything, including
the case, is perfect. Now I just want one with p90's too. Can't have too many
guitars. Will try to get a little better action on it, but it really is great as is.
