OVERVIEW

The meticulously accurate re-creation of a rock monster.

This Gibson Custom SG was a futuristic design when it was introduced in 1961, and it still has a modern look. Historically correct features include an ultra-thin, 2-horned body, the SG series addressed 2 of what Ted McCarty saw as the major issues of the now-retired Les Paul body style: weight and limited access to the upper treble register. The new body shape of the SG Standard was dramatically lighter than the old Les Paul and offered access to the entire fretboard. This amazing re-creation includes pickups and long neck tenon modeled precisely on the original. The VOS aging treatment makes it look exactly like a vintage original instrument that's been treated with loving care for its whole life with a slightly aged finish and hardware.

Vintage Original Spec series instruments receive a special nitro-cellulose finish treatment yielding the patina of a gently-aged vintage guitar while handcrafting enhances comfort and playability. Each VOS model has a solid mahogany back; historically accurate long-neck tenon for strength and sustain; and period-correct neck profile, hardware, and electronics.

A Little SG History

In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and two sharp cutaway horns that making the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

Comments about Gibson Custom SG Standard with Maestro VOS Electric Guitar:

I must commend MF on their customer service both in purchase and return of this guitar. They were quite helpful on both ends of the transaction. I just wish I didn't have to return it . . . but the instrument's quality just didn't equate to its price. There was fret buzz, rattling in the bridge, and a pretty washed out and dry piece of 'rosewood' for a fretboard. Also, that Maestro bridge was a tuning hassle no one needs.

The finish was nice, the guitar was well-made otherwise, but its deficiencies didn't warrant its price. It was the kind of guitar you never would have purchased if it was in your local store even after being impressed by its looks---it just let you down when you played it. I'm sure a good repair person could have tweaked it into shape, but why should I spend money on that after just dropping big money to buy it? Oh well.

Gettin' this one for my B'day. Cool, cool, cool, from its maestro vibrola to its headstock crown. Nice and light with tons of tone and vibe. Frets stand up nice and plays with ease all up and down the neck, which btw is easy access. A little pricey, but its a custom. Can't touch a real vintage in mint condition for less than $18,000.

well i want this guitar so bad i cant hardly stand it. i love the aged look that it has. this is and always will be my dream guitar. i always wanted a gibson sg with a maestro tremelo cause it gives it a more vintage look. the price is a little to high but get over it its a gibson custom shop. plus its more than likely worth every penny. hopefully i'll get mine very soon. oh yeah i had 1 more thing...can you polish the hardware with guitar polish? i love the finish but the hardware i dont really like.keep on rockin!!!!!

Comments about Gibson Custom SG Standard with Maestro VOS Electric Guitar:

This SG is the ultimate in SG design, if you ask me. It has a great finish (Cherry) and even a tremolo! Also, I love this guitar because I think it's the one U2's The Edge plays.

        Gibson Custom VOS

Comments about Gibson Custom SG Standard with Maestro VOS Electric Guitar:

Traded in a Fender 1960 Relic Strat ( G&L guy) for the 2 puckup version...even up!SG Std. VOS. I like the way the neck joins the body, wide fret board, and the BURSTBUCKER pickups. No trem bar because of tuning problems. If you have the chance get one of these...you will have NO regretsAlso own a triple pup LP Black Beauty that give ultra phat tones.Faded cherry finish is the 'bomb'!

        I love it!

Comments about Gibson Custom SG Standard with Maestro VOS Electric Guitar:

I bought my Classic White VOS SG STD the same day that I bought my '57 LP BB w/Bigsby and my Custom Shop LP. While the LPs are excellent; I actually enjoy playing my SG more. Its so light and careless, and I can crank out so many classic tones (I can zero in on Clapton's "woman" tone flawlessly, I just cut the treble and bingo). The fretboard is a fatty, but it is so responsive. I rated value slightly lower than the other categories because just for a little extra change, you can get the 3 humbucker lp model. The guitar looks stunning too... this guitar is AMAZING and BREATHTAKING - and I'm comparing it to the '57 Black Beauty.
