Eye-catching looks and stunning sound plugged or unplugged.

Based on the Gibson "Square Shoulder" Hummingbird series of guitars, you know right away that the new Gibson Songwriter Special has the right DNA. To improve the breed even further, Gibson uses the vintage-style "wide-X" top bracing on this guitar for that warm, powerful, "old Gibson" sound. To bring the guitar up to the 21st century, Gibson has refined the neck profile to make it slimmer and faster. They've also built in an L.R. Baggs pickup for those times you need to "plug in."

The Songwriter Special uses all solid wood construction
Solid imported Honduran mahogany for the back and sides, solid Sitka spruce for the top. The neck is one piece mahogany too for added stability. The vintage-style "wide X" top bracing allows for greater top movement, and much improved projection. The bracing is scalloped by hand to keep weight down, and adding strength at the same time. This combination of tonewoods and bracing design makes for a powerful, yet very articulate sound.

The factory installed pickup is the highly respected L.R. Baggs Element with a convenient soundhole rim mounted volume control. The pickup delivers a rich, "natural" sound, much smoother than many other "acoustic-electric" pickups. The guitar/pickup combo responds well to all playing styles and needs from vigorous flatpicking to soft chordal strums.

The Indian rosewood fingerboard is graced by Gibson's "floret" inlays, and design that dates back to the famed Gibson banjos of the 30s. The bridge is Indian rosewood as well. The guitar is finished in a gorgeous ebony lacquer finish, not the cheaper polyurethane finish used on most other guitars at this price. To top off the guitar's good looks are a subtle top binding, bound pickguard, and a beautiful abalone rosette around the soundhole. This guitar is shipped complete with a custom fit, hardshell case.

I wanted one cutaway to go with my other non cutaway acoustics. I looked, searched, played, listened, and could not find one I wanted, until I saw the Gibson Songwriter Special. The all black color really caught my eye. I ordered one,and I could not be more pleased. It plays great smooth action, neck feels great, sounds great. It has that destinctive Gibson TONE I love. Great guitar, Check one out.

    Truly a Beautiful Gibson Guitar

    By Les-FKH9E

Comments about Gibson Songwriter Special Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've never ordered anything without seeing or playing it first. But I did this black beauty. I took a chance, and honestly, got off to a bad start with the "weak" pickup on this one. But with a little help from a guitar guru and a new pickup that befitted this classic, I was in business! This guitar does not have a lot of the fancy trim that more expensive ones have, but, really is a beauty! I, too, had a strap button installed by a professional. It's really a great guitar. It is amazingly light in weight and while on stage, actually catches the light and throws it everywhere.A fine classic! (Why not? Its a Gibson!)

    One Sweet Acoustic

    By guitarqueen

Comments about Gibson Songwriter Special Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar from Musician's Friend without playing it first. I have two Gibson SG's and felt I couldn't go wrong with a Gibson Acoustic. The guitar is absolutely beautiful, sounds amazing and plays well. Very well balanced in tone, has a nice mid-range scoop and a bell-like high-end. There is only one strap button so if you play with a strap standing up you'll either have to tie the strap at the headstock or have a professional drill a hole for a second button for your strap. I had to since I played a gig with this guitar and was constantly fixing it on my shoulder all night. No problems since I had another strap button put in. Overall glad I own this beauty.

    Gibson Songwriter Special shaky start

    By Sampson

    from Middle of nowhere, PA

Comments about Gibson Songwriter Special Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was so excited when I saw this guitar. I went to my local music stores to make a futile attempt at finding one. Well they called around. Gibson doesn't make it anymore. I saw that musicians friend had some in stock so I decided to take a chance. I opened it up to find that the guitar was really in bad shape. The strings were rusted, the tuners were completely stiff. It looked amazing, and then I played it. It almost seemed as if it sat in a museum and no one played it. Well I had ordered a box of elixir strings and the Fishman Pro EQ Platinum Acoustic Guitar Preamp and they all came together. I took the strings off, cleaned it up to the best that I could, put on a new set of elixirs and it played like a dream. It was incredibly smooth and incredibly gorgeous. It did need a little breaking in (like a new pair of shoes) but it is the greatest guitar I've ever played. I do use the pre amp when I plug it in. You don't have to, but I would definitely recommend getting a pre amp to go with it. It makes it sound more immaculate (if that actually is possible). Love it. Best guitar ever made. Will keep it forever. Get one before they disappear.

Great Guitar - Til you plug it in

    By Sharp Shooter Austin

    from Austin, Texas

Comments about Gibson Songwriter Special Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a beautiful guitar. It is breath taking in appearance. It plays beautifully. The neck is true, and frets easily. This guitar sounds great, until you plug it in. The pick up is sub standard, especially for the price. When plugged in, it sounds flat, and has very little sustain. Also, when pluged in, the first and sixth strings are about five percent louder than the other strings, very anoying. Again, this is just a sub standard pick up, that could be corrected with new electronics. Gibson made a great guitar here, then fell short with cheaper electronics.

    Stairway to Heaven

    By BluesFinger

    from Fort Lauderdale, FL

Comments about Gibson Songwriter Special Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Very Nice Guitar! You can't go wrong with this guitar. Normally, I handle every guitar first before buying it. But I could not find this guitar anywhere. So I played other Gibson Songwriter guitars to get some feel for it. Finally, I decided to take a chance and buy it online. When I received it, I found the packaging in good condition. When I opened it, I found the guitar in perfect condition and right away, I could smell the quality in the wood. It was like opening a treasure box. I was very happy to see it in excellent condition. The workmanship and finish was perfect. I did notice the pick guard was slightly lifted on two ends. I assumed the change in temperature might have cause it and I carefully applied finger pressure to it. That did the trick. The first song I played on it was "Stairway to Heaven" and it sounded like bittersweet. Next, I hooked up to my Fender DeVille amplifier using the clean channel and played it through several songs. When I was done, I new I had a serious guitar. The electronics played well from the get go. I don't know what brand guitar strings came with it, but I believe they are 10 guage. Also, the guitar case is a nice addition with blue lining in the inside and gold hardware with the "Gibson" logo on the outside. Enjoy!

Hey, I bought this becasue I needed something that sounded good and looked great out front as I'm a lead singer for a classic rock band. This fit the bill. It sounds great and looks great. And the electronics work great. It's a unique Gibby for sure so grab one before they are all gone.

    Black Magic

    By OnlyBlack4Me

Comments about Gibson Songwriter Special Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Since I buy ONLY black guitars, finding the right "next" one is sometimes difficult. Having fallen in love with the Songwriter, when the All-Black Songwriter Special became available, it was almost like Gibson had just me in mind ! Varying from the Deluxe's rosewood back and sides, the Special employs African Mahogany. The resulting sound is Pure Gibson ! Crisp, clear highs - blended mids - and projecting lows...All in unmistakable Gibson tone. The matching rosewood bridge and fretboard break the pure black quite nicely for a stunning visual presence. Painted guitars (acoustics) are sometimes suspect about what's underneath, but there are clearly no worries here ! This model is an instant collectible, so if you are looking for something a little different from the typical wood-grain finishes AND have that legendary tone, this Gibson's got your name all over it....just like mine !

    Black Collectible

    By OnlyBlack4Me

    from Indiana

Comments about Gibson Songwriter Special Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

All the guitars I own are black. This desire for only black guitars naturally limits my choices. Further limited my prospects is my affinity for Gibsons. While I have others (Jacksons, Fenders), I always seek Gibsons. So, when GC posted this model, I had to have it. I have been searching for the next right black acoustic for a while (6 months). Since I fell in love with the songwriter about 2 months ago, an all black one just had to be the right one ! No disappointment here. It is a Gibson....what else is there to say? The finish is flawless. The neck is smooth and feels very similar to the neck on my '84 V. This certainly adds to the playability. Add a perfect rosewood fretboard with flawless fretwork and you have a silkly smooth acoustic. There is no evidence of dead frets or buzz - intonation is just what you expect from Gibson. The value is tremendous. The deluxe cutaway will give you an on-board tuner. You get a stunning one-of-a-kind acoustic that projects classic Gibson tone in full dreadnought volume.Excellent choice for me. If you like black guitars, add this one to your collection. It is certainly a collectible...no doubt.
