This guitar is THE BEST gypsy style guitar you will find for the money. I've had the opportunity to play many different European and American made models worth $$$$ more and I prefer this to all of them. It is extremely loud, great for jamming rhythm AND lead. Its also has a nice enough tone for other styles besides gypsy swing, and it does have that great nasaly twang to it. Beware the cheap strings it ships with, they will last about 1 day. Made in China but the craftmanship isn't too bad. My only complaint is that none of the Gitanes are offered with an onboard pickup. This guitar could be priced for a lot more $$$ and still be worth it.
I play post-bop, modal jazz--not Gypsy jazz--and I have always valued the acoustic sound of my guitars over their amplified sound, a quality I always try to recreate on gigs, normally with bass and drums and various horns and/or piano. I have played old and new Epiphones and Heritage archtops for years. I was stunned when I heard the absoltely perfect tone of the Gitane 320. Plenty of warm bass, a responsive and throaty mid-range, and super loud and contoured high end--all make this guitar the perfect jazz guitar. My Heritage with a floating Armstrong pickup sounds good, but the Gitane's tone simply blows me away. I wasn't expecting it to be as brilliant as it is, hoping maybe to have an acoustic guitar to kick around with. But with a piezo pickup, this is going to be my main instrument now. It's loud with incredible overtones. I can't believe that I paid so little for am archtop guitar which sounds this great.
The Gitane line in general offers some pretty great bang for the buck, but it was the versatility of the DG-320 that overall led me to purchase it. The combination of the long scale with the D-hole make this a fine instrument for both rhythm or lead playing.The craftsmanship is very solid, and the woods used throughout seem to be of very high quality (The laminate rosewood used for the back and sides is strikingly beautiful)The guitar does have a good deal of overtones, which are not always desired in a gypsy jazz guitar, but I use it mostly as a solo jazz instrument (in not a strict gypsy style)and the overtones are not a problem--actually they're quite lovely. with a good set of strings, this is a loud, punchy, yet warm toned instrument. The neck is a comfortable hand-filling shape, the fretwork is excellent, and overall, a guitar like this represents about as good a value in a gypsy jazz guitar as is available.
This guitar is velly nice. Craftmanship is superior(and I have a few guitars). It came with regular strings and sounded as good as my other Brazilian Rosewoods. Fit and finish excellent. I put on the regular gypsy strings, this is a sound that takes some ear training, and I'm not used to it, but if you don't like it you can go to the regular acoustic strings and it compares with high end guitars. This is probably one of the best values in town, plus if your adventurous, you can train your ear in the gypsy sound. I own two of them one Brazilian, and one Indian RW, because they are a great value, and I can put regular strings on one, gypsy on the other to educate my musical palate.
I just got this in today and have played it quite a bit. It's a bit twangy ...I had hoped for a warmer sound from the reviews I had read here. I bought mine used, so I expected some scratches, but I didn't expect an entire side piece of the bridge to be missing. It doesn't really do anything, being a purely cosmetic piece. I'm really in no mood to have to get used to a position marker on the 10th fret. I may have to see about fixing that little anomaly. It's a very pretty guitar -- the veneer on the back is striking, almost gaudy. The workmanship seems pretty good overall. I think it will be a fun guitar to play and tweak a bit along the way. Nowhere near worth the full retail price. Glad I got mine used.
