OVERVIEW

The quintessential G&L guitar with P-90-style pickups.

The G&L ASAT Special just might be the quintessential G&L guitar, viewed by many as Leo's ultimate single-cutaway. Back in 1985, Leo Fender launched this model under the G&L Broadcaster name, which prompted a response from Fred Gretsch of Gretsch Guitars over the name just as it had 35 years earlier. History buffs will recall that the Broadkaster name is owned by Gretsch, and once again, a Broadcaster from Leo was required to have its name changed. This time around, the name became "ASAT" which is US military shorthand for an "Anti-Satellite" missile.

The ASAT Special, as the model became known, features jumbo single-coil Magnetic Field Design pickups, each with a narrow bobbin aperture for a coil which is shallow, yet wide. In this regard, an MFD jumbo single-coil is similar to a P-90 or Jazzmaster pickup, yet the MFD principle provides a punchier bottom end and brighter top-end sparkling with harmonics. Leo further departed with the past with the addition of his innovative Saddle-Lock bridge which transfers string energy right into the body end-grain for an incredibly resonant instrument. The result is one of the most versatile guitars ever, serving up ballsy twang to searing blues to smooth jazz tones.

I picked up this guitar on the stupid deal of the day. I'm generally a Strat HSS or Les Paul lover. I purchased this not knowing if I would like the guitar. Since it arrived I have not been able to put it down. This guitar is better than any Telecaster that I've ever played and the build quality is up there with custom shop guitars. The pickups are hot and versital with great rock and blues tones. Buy this guitar you won't be sorry!

The first guitar sent to me was an open box model sold as knew; couldn't get guitar cable into jack never got a chance to play it. Was sent another guitar; also appeared to be an open box model with the same jack problem. The headstock is cheap looking and lacks a stamp or plate indicating country of origin as my other G&L guitars have. Also sent back to MF. This experience was an epic fail. I will be limiting my purchases from MF in the future. Will use MF to get my local shop to match pricing and shop local in the future.

Comments about G&L ASAT Special Rosewood Fingerboard Electric Guitar:

Bought this on STDOTD and been loving it ever since. Have six tele style guitars in my collection including a Fender and this one blows them all away. This guitar feels great, the intonation was spot on and my other tele's are collecting dust since I bought it. The feel of this guitar compares to much more expensive guitars. I wasn't a fan of the color when I bought it... but I am now. It's a beautiful guitar.

Comments about G&L ASAT Special Rosewood Fingerboard Electric Guitar:

Tried this STDOD because of the price. Was pleasantly surprised how well made this guitar was. The neck is great, and the pickups offer a much heavier growl than most single coils. Overall, it's just a beautiful guitar. Comes with a nice case, too.

Comments about G&L ASAT Special Rosewood Fingerboard Electric Guitar:

This is a great guitar. The neck is great. The pick ups must be fairly well wound because they really snap; think of Mark Knopfler's sound because that's what I hear. They are so sensitive they relate very subtle picks, bends, etc. Solid guitar overall. Mine is candy apple red with a white pick guard which is sweet. I have a MIM Telecaster HHS which is really good and I really like and it has that truly classic Telecaster look (except for the reversed switch plate) but it just doesn't quite get me there. Pick ups sound a bit thin, I think. That is hardly the case with the ASAT. The overall feel, balance, weight, the neck and the high output pick ups gets me there. I'd say if you want a telecaster, get this instead. It is after all a Leo Fender guitar. Oh, and the bridge is superb.

Comments about G&L ASAT Special Rosewood Fingerboard Electric Guitar:

Took a chance on the SDOTD. I'm in love. I haven't fully bonded with a Telecaster/T-style guitar over the years and this guitar changes all of that. The pickups have a very full, modern sound. The neck feels great and the action and intonation are spot on. Absolutely worth it if you're fan of T-style guitar's and don't have any vintage hang ups.

Comments about G&L ASAT Special Rosewood Fingerboard Electric Guitar:

If I'm stupid for jumping on this sale, well. Exceptional fret work, well balanced, excellent clarity and a perfect bridge. I used to own one years ago but I always missed it. This one is free of the noise that my old one had. Yes there is some but it's very usable.

The MF website describes guitar in this color as having a body made of ash when in fact the certificate of authenticity states the body is made of alder. Still an excellent sounding wood.
