OVERVIEW

A classic in a limited-edition finish.

The G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy is a factory-modded version of the traditional single-cutaway bolt-on axe. For players looking for the unmistakable warmth of a classic humbucker in the neck position, the Bluesboy delivers with a well-balanced pairing of a G&L alnico humbucker and a single-coil G&L bridge pickup.

Framed in a classic boxed-steel bridge, the single-coil alnico bridge pickup delivers crisp attack with complex harmonics while individual brass saddles offer modern levels of intonation refinement. Flip to the neck ‘bucker and you’ll discover all the charismatic warmth you could ask for. Put them together and you’ll enjoy a whole new level of pleasure.

The Tribute Series ASAT Classic Bluesboy is dripping with mojo at a price attainable for every working musician. This model comes in a special limited-edition finish with a 3-ply white pickguard and maple fretboard. Once you play a G&L Tribute Series, you’ll never look back. Case sold separately.

I just got the delivery of my new Tribute (INSERT MODLE NAME - This thing thinks it's a curse word). It kills me not to call it a Telecaster but I'll deal with that in my own time.
Out of the box, the E string was a tiny bit low for my twangin' playing but appropriately high for most people. After a thorough go over, the first thing I noticed is that I needed to clean off my drool. This guitar is beautiful. It came out of the box foxier than Chyrell Ladd in a string bikini.
So I gave it the test of my Super Chame X2. I didn't go through a mess of settings but I used my favorite one that usually ends up on my CDs. The heavens opened and I saw the dude with a beard smiling!
This is an amazing guitar. I bought it on the deal of the day here on MusicianFriend but don't wait and hope for that to happen again soon. it is worth every penny of list price and probably twice list price. I have 2 other Tribute (a s t a t ... still thinks it's a curse word) versions and though I like them all, this one rocks the heavens. Closing my eyes it sounds great but the color.... well, let's face it. Color like this makes surf music and Trop-Rock just sound better.
A neck is subjective I suppose but I don't think anyone is going to feel anything but love for this one. I am usually a rosewood kind of guy but for the first time, I'm happy to go both ways. Don't tell my priest.
Buy one - and make good music. You will not be sad you did!

So here's the deal with this guitar: it's built really well, plays really well, but the pickups are wildly out of whack, to the point of being unusable. The neck humbucker is extremely muddy and bassy while at the same time the bridge pup is piercing ice picks. It seems the neck pickup they use in the Indo models has too much output for the bridge pup, so they raise the bridge pup really high and lower the humbucker to the pickguard to balance the volume. What this does is bring the tone out of balance creating the extreme combination of tones I described above.

The bridge pup is surprisingly spec-less: no output listed, no model number, no brand…my suspicion is that this is the culprit in the tone mismatch. Many people buy these guitars and immediately replace the pups (Seth Lover neck and MFD bridge)…this will set you back another 2 bills so factor that in to your decision to buy.

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Electric Guitar:

Once again astounded by an INDO ASAT. Unlike the previous review I have know problem not calling my guitar a telecaster for it may be mistaken as one of those MIM jobs. ASAT Baby.....INDO! Great build, great great color, electronics and hardware are solid. Setup is spot on though I always have new guitars professionally set up. I have a USA Bluesboy and had to buy this one because I've always wanted a tele/ASAT style sea foam green guit. I'm really glad I did, so sweet. Equally as fun to play but completely different sound b/c totally different pickups and different fretboard. I got mine on sale but worth every cent of the full retail price. I have about 20 hours on mine at this point and I'm completely satisfied with my choice to pull the trigger. Mine is definitely a 5 star guitar at this price point, playability, quality of parts, build and presentation. Don't be pinche, Bluesboy configuration kills and this isn't a stock color for G&L, get'em while they're mint. You can alway throw a Seth Lover and MFD single bridge in it down the road for 2 bills if desired.

Best "budget" guitar

  • Fast neck

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Electric Guitar:

So I'll just say that I know someone with a Custom Shop Fender Tele that I've played a few times, and out-of-the-box I already like this guitar just as much.
Stupid Deal for three hundred buckeroos, you will not find a better guitar for the price. Pickups are the best stock budget guitar pickups I've ever played; bridge pickup is crisp and bright with some warmth, neck pickup is pretty dark and smooth, might be too dark for some tastes. Neck is beautiful. It was almost perfectly set up, just a couple of personalization adjustments and it rips. And some new strings, stock strings were pretty stiff.
Do not buy a Squier or even a Mexican Tele. And maybe even an American. I'm going to throw in some Seymour Duncans I got a deal on to tame the highs of the bridge and a Phat Cat in neck for more chime and dirt, but honestly these pickups are perfectly fine.
If you need a T-style guitar. With overseas guitars of course you do take a gamble on build quality, we'll see how long this lasts before electronics or something need to be surfaced. But G&L has solidified its place in my mind as best current bangforbuck guitars out there, and this new model takes that to a new level.

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Electric Guitar:

For those of you who were worried about the color, it does look like the picture :) If the dry neck bothers you, rub it down with lemon oil when you change the strings. If you want the lacquered feel, you'll have to go with squire/fender. First impression is very comfortable to play, the action was good out of the box. Tuners are pretty much what you'd get with a standard fender. Fender makes this guitar in a similar color, only with a black pick guard, two humbuckers, and it's more money. I prefer this set up. Some have complained that the Fender HSS strats don't sound like strats, and it's a good point, because the hum bucker takes out the trebly option on the five tone switch. This is better; you get tele sounds on the bridge, beefy sounds on the neck and a nice blend in between.

I really like the neck, it has that strat feel, radius and size, which gives strat players a straight across playing feel, the PUP's have a nice blues sound, deep dark in the Humbuck and a twang country blues sound in the single coil. I like the guitar's overall feel and sound, yet it's slightly different from the stratocaster and telecaster, giving it a uniqueness all it's own, I have the mint green one and it's a beautiful color imo..

This guitar arrived with a good set up. No string buzz, good intonation. I see nothing I want to change. The pickups are better than I expected them to be and the bridge saddles allow individual intonation of each string. The neck is awesome. There are no flaws to be found.

A good axe for the price

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Electric Guitar:

Took the bait on a " Stupid deal of the day" and glad that I did. This thing rocks and is suitable to my needs. Action was way too low on the A and low E, a bit of adjusting got it where it is playable, but still wont do until I change out the strings. The finish shows a lack of workmanship, almost as if it was rushed, perhaps a little more sanding before the finish was applied, the neck is a satin finish but still smooth and fast. All in all I would give it a B+. The frets could stand a bit more polishing.
Considering the price, the sound of the humbucker / single coil combination and the wild color ( it is a very nice mint green, not the pelham blue some have mentioned ) I have to give it a 5 star rating regardless of the lack of finishing. These things I can either do myself or live with.

As a worship leader I lean more on playing Acoustic rhythm guitar. I have started using this in place of that on several songs. I can jump into a solo so much easier. When I got this I thought I would soon be upgrading the pups, it sounds really nice as is! I'm still on the stock strings but will be going with Fat bottom skinny tops to get a bit more of the Brad Paisley sound. Buy, buy, buy!!!!! Great deal at any price.
