OVERVIEW

The Ascari GTS broke new ground for G&L, and the team of Paul Gagon and Grover Jackson are back with a new flavor that’ll take you back without being another throwback.

The Ascari GT-90 takes all the carefully designed architecture from the GTS and dials up P-90 tone that’s better than ever. Typical P-90-equipped guitars suffer an imbalance between the neck and bridge pickups, forcing you to struggle with dual volume controls to find a balance. Not with the GT-90. Gagon has wound countless P-90 type pickups and used his deep understanding of pickup engineering to create an amazingly well-matched set. With a single volume control, a world of harmonically rich P-90 tone is finally accessible with ease.

Such a guitar should have a classic look, and the Ascari GT-90 delivers with a rich, old-school Tobacco Sunburst finish over its crème-bound mahogany body and neck, reinforced by classic crème pickup covers, gold speed knobs and understated dot inlay. This is the P-90 guitar you’ve dreamed of: superbly balanced tone in an incredibly well-balanced, lightweight instrument.

Case sold separately.

A simple-to-use tone machine with a beautiful finish and perfectly-matched P-90-type pickups.

I've owned USA made G&L's for 20 years. My 11 year old wanted to start playing and wanted one. This import Tribute model came up around his birthday at a Stupid Deal of the Day, I figured it was worth a shot.

The build quality is astonishingly good. Action out of the box was good. Strumming acoustically she sings. Plugged in the P90's sound the same as my USA Korina Collection ASAT. What surprised me was the sustain. My son played a clean finger style number to a large auditorium with this instrument and the sound saturated the hall with clear notes and subtle under tones. Overdriven, the G&L P90's give you all the crunch and fuzz synonymous with this pick up. The G&L Tribute Ascari GT90 offers no excuses and no compromises. Quality on par or better than a PRS SE we looked at. Value for the money, none better.

Jumped on this while on sale (SDOD) but I'm the one who feels stupid. Not certain that this is normal MF practice but the guitar I was sent was obviously a blemished, open box item. There were two glaring defects in the fit and finish, one I could live with the other not so much. There was a large black dot or "worm hole" on the top of the guitar and even worse, the neck of the guitar was mid-set and literally connected at the body at a half cocked angle that made the guitar nearly unplayable. (Not to mention the G&L box was missing the barcode label which had been cut out.)
Disappointed, I immediately contacted Customer Service wanting an expedited exchange because I really wanted the guitar. They said I would have to ship back the guitar but then they would "next day air" a new one once they received. I promptly shipped back the guitar and tracked it back to MF. Two days after the guitar was received at their return facility, still heard nothing on the status of my expedited exchange so I call back to get an update only to find that the returns are "backed up" and that my package hasn't even been looked at yet so no new guitar was heading my way! Needless to say, I was not happy so I cancelled my request for exchange and opted for a full refund which I did get once my package was processed approximately 5 days after it was received.
I understand how things go but the customer service process for exchanges is a huge opportunity for MF.
Going forward, I will think twice before any future purchases and have actually made my last two purchases elsewhere online.

Comments about G&L Tribute Acari GT90 Electric Guitar:

So I bought this on a whim SDOTD, so happy I did. I've been searching for a P-90 guitar for some time now; when I saw this, read the specs and read the previous reviews; I pulled the trigger.

This guitar is a departure from USA G&L guitars as far as I've read, after all its made in Indonsia. It is comprised of (as others have reviewed); a gibson like neck, strat looking body, prs feeling/lightweight, and of course the 3 on each side headstock. As soon as I got the guitar I felt all of these characteristics right away (own usa gibsons, strats, have played PRS). Having owned these previous guitars I loved the feel of this G&L. Right out of the box I tuned it up quick and jammed for hours.

It's lighter than my other Gibsons, homemade teles, and honestly feels lighter than the other strats. I like the tone better than ALL my other guitars I must say...these P90's are voiced nicely and they break up perfect....others have said they blow away other p90 guitars costing 5x-6x as much. The tone-pros bridge and tailpiece are sturdy and this guitar holds tune excellently. I'm a fan of the tobacco sunburst over cream binding...

I would have definetly paid full price before if I had tried this guitar for even half an hour....Great Job
        G&L !

Comments about G&L Tribute Acari GT90 Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar for a birthday present to myself last year. I own 50+ guitars and found this design interesting, a Strat/Paul with P90's. It is very well made and a looker too. The P90's are top notch so don't think about replacing them.

This guitar is very responsive to the touch which wasn't expected. Strum chords and it sings, hit it and it growls. As I stated in the title it's a player's axe. The only things I changed was placing cream knobs, a cream switch tip, and cream tuner buttons, which was for effects and my personal taste.

If you're looking for something different this could be it. I know mine has found a permanent home.

Tone monster! Tone in buckets! P-90 sound similar to my Gibson with P-90 but better, breaks up quicker and smoothly as you increase drive. Amazing sound, great for early Clapton Cream type tone. Turn the tone knob all the way down GREAT woman tone not muffled and muddy like every other guitar I have. This 12 inch radius with Gibson length neck plays so easily, sounds so good. Makes me sound much better than I am! Hooked up to a RAH Catlinbread pedal and you have early Led Zep.

Comments about G&L Tribute Acari GT90 Electric Guitar:

Bought this on a SDOTD whim. It's my 5th G&L Tribute. Do not know how that happened; I certainly didn't need it. If you don't believe me, just ask Old What's Her Name.

Also have 2 Fallouts, an ASAT Special Deluxe (w/MFD pickups) and an ASAT Solamente I built-up from G&L Tribute parts for slide guitar. The rest of the herd are Epiphones with holes in them (semi and hollow bodies). No Fenders any more, they just don't fit me. I do have LOTS of guitars, but none cost more than six bills, and I do all my own luthier work, so I've got good experience in "moderately priced" axes.

This Ascari GT90 is a little wacky, even funky.
It's all mahogany with a set neck (i.e. NOT bolted, GLUED), a 24-3/4 inch scale, and a 1-11/16 inch nut with 3x3 tuners on a canted headstock. THOSE specs are of course classic Gibson (or, in my world, Epiphone).

However, the double-horn body is VERY light (mine is SEVEN pounds 1 oz, lightest of my G&Ls, and not nearly a Les Paul "log") with a carved-top and single vol and tone controls. Those are PRS-looking specs.

HOWEVER, the pickups are G&L's version of a P-90 single coil: neck is 5.6K ohms and bridge is 8.8K ohms on mine, so definitely in the vintage mold.

HOWEVER (some more), the neck pickup is nominally the same as the Fallout Tribute neck (same part number except "C" for creme instead of "B" for black) BUT the Fallout neck is about 7.6K ohms (LOTS hotter), PLUS the Ascari has 500K pots (like used with humbuckers)and no treble-bleed cap as on the other Tributes.

So we have very lightweight PRS-looking axe with vintagey P90 pups with Gibson dimensions from G&L, built in Indonesia.

BTW the mahogany is clean, the finish is gorgeous (for thick polyurethane), tuners are great, nut is nice, bridge is Epihone quality. Set-up was as good as I've ever seen in an Asian-built guitar, no joke.

Here's the bottom line: don't know how, but this thing just works. Pulled it out of the TRIPLE boxes, plunked it on my lap, tuned three keys a tiny bit, plugged into a Egnater Tweaker w/ Vintage 30, and BOOM, there it is.

Leo, you magnificent you-know-what. Brilliant. Feels like a part of your body.

SO, here's the deal: when this guitar is a SDOTD, just buy it. Pawn the dog if you have to, just buy the thing. After two days it will feel like you've owned it for 10 years.

Nearly perfect for a youngster (looks METAL, plays vintage, easy-to-play neck, short scale for BENDS TO IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS. PLUS, gorgeous, duh. Buy a Tubescreamer and you're good to go.).

At the daily price, it's still a good deal, but I would steer y'all to the Fallout Tribute instead, as it's nearly as light and LOTS more flexible. See the excellent internet video demos of the Fallout (overall, my favorite new solid-body guitar; if I could stop buying cheap guitars for a second, I could afford a USA one).

If there's a fire, I'll be carrying a Fallout in one hand and the Ascari in the other as I exit the building. Old What's Her Name will have to fend for herself.

Comments about G&L Tribute Acari GT90 Electric Guitar:

Right out of the box, I needed to raise saddle height to eliminate minor buzz. The volume knob/pot was a little crooked, but G&L sent me replacement parts with no hassle.

I recently did some fret leveling/recrown/polishing. It now has better feel than any other guitar I've ever played. I was able to put the saddle height quite a bit lower after fret leveling.

The P90s sound great. I do hear some electrical noise on one of my amps, but blending the bridge/neck p/ups seems to cancel electrical noise when that issue comes up.

I've previously owned a USA Fender strat and a Gibson LP Studio. I like my Ascari better than both of those.

As with many other 'import/value' guitars, expect that you won't really get the most out of this guitar without investing in some setup work to fine tune the playability (or learn to DIY). Out of the box, I felt like it was great for the price. After some additional setup work, it's just great for any price.

I had an unfortunate experience with MF last year that went on for approximately 4 weeks. It left a poor taste in my mouth. After cooling down for close to a year, I felt compelled to mend my 30 year relationship with this company. I called to discuss what my issue was and "EVERYONE" went out of there way to rectify the situation and "WIN" this customer back. THEY DID just that !!! Now that's customer service. I couldn't be more pleased... Thank you ALL...
