Swamp Ash hollowbody, bolt-on maple neck and Paul Gagon-designed neck humbucker.

The G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy is a factory-modded version of Leo’s final word on the traditional single-cutaway bolt-on guitar, and the semi-hollow version takes it further with G&L’s distinctive twin voice chambers and f-hole added to a beautiful swamp ash body. Like its solid-body stablemate, this axe delivers a well-balanced pairing of a G&L alnico humbucker designed by Paul Gagon and a single-coil G&L Magnetic Field Design bridge pickup designed by Leo Fender.

Framed in a classic boxed-steel bridge, the single-coil MFD bridge pickup delivers crisp attack with complex harmonics while individual brass saddles offer modern levels of intonation refinement. Flip to the neck ‘bucker and you’ll discover all the charismatic warmth you could ask for. Put ‘em together and you’ll find yourself immersed in exploring the limits of this guitar’s surprising versatility. What’s more, the semi-hollow body softens the midrange attack, accentuating the low and high harmonics.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Mine came with a loose jack, and a wiring short on the Bridge Pickup. It has a nasty buzz. The Neck Pickup was O.K. WAY too much noise for me playing out. I sent it back.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I'm commenting after owning this guitar for about three weeks and after breaking in a second set of strings. You are probably already aware of the corporate and conceptual ancestry of G&L guitars. Intrigued by this history, plus wanting to get a lighter-weight alternative to the traditional Telecaster, I picked up a semi-hollow ASAT Bluesboy with a tobacco sunburst finish, rosewood neck, and a Seth Lover humbucker installed in the neck position as a factory modification.

Fit and finish are largely good. The guitar was sold without set-up, so I had to do my own intonation and pickup heights. I also had to smooth down the frets with steel wool. The only problem: residue from the factory polishing sereptitously accumulated in the pickup selector switch, which one day completely killed the signal from the neck pickup until it was remedied with pot cleaning spray.

And those frets! They're jumbo size, which require some getting used to. It helps to lighten up the grip when fretting the strings.

Now the strings... it comes with a set of 0.010 (standard light gauge). I tried a set of 0.009s, but found that they would not stay in tune even after the stretching routine. I'm still experimenting with gauges.

The ASAT is not exactly the same as the Telecaster. Similarly, the semi-hollow Bluesboy is not the same as a Tele Thinline. And that's a good thing, since to me Thinlines sound like a Campbell's soup can with rubber bands on it. The Bluesboy body has generous routing on either side of the center spine, which of course remains solid to anchor the neck and bridge, etc. And because it's hollow, you do have to watch for feedback issues that a Tele don't have. On the other hand, the hollow construction puts a different tonal palate at your disposal, approaching that of a Gibson ES-335, but with the ergonomics of a Telecaster. The ASAT bears closest sonic resemblence to its Telecaster brethern when using the bridge pickup. Neither worse nor better, just ...different.

Beware that Telecaster and ASAT parts are NOT interchangeable. But then neither are the sounds. This guitar complements the Tele, but does not replace it.

G&L customer service? I called the number on their website and left a voice mail message inquiring about string gauges. That was two weeks ago, and I have yet to hear back.
