OVERVIEW

Swamp Ash hollowbody, bolt-on maple neck and Paul Gagon-designed neck humbucker.

The G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy is a factory-modded version of Leo's final word on the traditional single-cutaway bolt-on guitar, and the semi-hollow version takes it further with G&L's distinctive twin voice chambers and f-hole added to a beautiful swamp ash body. Like its solid-body stablemate, this axe delivers a well-balanced pairing of a G&L alnico humbucker designed by Paul Gagon and a single-coil G&L Magnetic Field Design bridge pickup designed by Leo Fender.

Framed in a classic boxed-steel bridge, the single-coil MFD bridge pickup delivers crisp attack with complex harmonics while individual brass saddles offer modern levels of intonation refinement. Flip to the neck ˜bucker and you'll discover all the charismatic warmth you could ask for. Put ˜em together and you'll find yourself immersed in exploring the limits of this guitar's surprising versatility. What's more, the semi-hollow body softens the midrange attack, accentuating the low and high harmonics.

Case sold separately.

I am a lefty. I got this in the event I have company that might want to play, and no one I have in my circle plays lefty. I know how many times I have held a righty guitar upside down and tapped into my deepest points of dyslexia....

I had an excellent custom Bluesboy and this entry level G&L is solid and more precise than MIM Fenders I have had, though some of those have been more impressive than American Standard instruments I have had....

The combo of single coil at bridge and humbucker at the neck is wonderful.

Although my previous comments don't sound like it, this is a really nice guitar. The setup out of the box was really bad, especially the string height. Nobody likes an action set that high and lowering it caused it to fret out badly. I finally found a happy medium and the tone came in nicely. I suspect one high fret but finding it is over my head. The intonation is not great but it will do for now. I'll take it to a pro at some point for a real setup. My fret pressure probably causes more note distortion than the intonation problem. Also, there was a small crack in the finish. It is barely noticeable and as long as it doesn't spread I don't think anyone will ever see it.
I sent a previous one back for a simple mechanical problem that I could have fixed myself but I was afraid of voiding my warranty. That one actually played a little easier than this one right out of the box.
Too make a long story longer, I think what I'm trying to say is I don't believe there is very much consistency in the manufacturing or inspection of these guitars; however, with all that said I still really like the guitar. It feels good, it's light, it is a beautiful guitar and it sounds great. With just a little more work I believe it will be my go to guitar. If you are willing to put a little work into it after you get it then buy it. I don't think you'll be sorry: I'm not

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I'm commenting after owning this guitar for about three weeks and after breaking in a second set of strings. You are probably already aware of the corporate and conceptual ancestry of G&L guitars. Intrigued by this history, plus wanting to get a lighter-weight alternative to the traditional Telecaster, I picked up a semi-hollow ASAT Bluesboy with a tobacco sunburst finish, rosewood neck, and a Seth Lover humbucker installed in the neck position as a factory modification.

Fit and finish are largely good. The guitar was sold without set-up, so I had to do my own intonation and pickup heights. I also had to smooth down the frets with steel wool. The only problem: residue from the factory polishing sereptitously accumulated in the pickup selector switch, which one day completely killed the signal from the neck pickup until it was remedied with pot cleaning spray.

And those frets! They're jumbo size, which require some getting used to. It helps to lighten up the grip when fretting the strings.

Now the strings... it comes with a set of 0.010 (standard light gauge). I tried a set of 0.009s, but found that they would not stay in tune even after the stretching routine. I'm still experimenting with gauges.

The ASAT is not exactly the same as the Telecaster. Similarly, the semi-hollow Bluesboy is not the same as a Tele Thinline. And that's a good thing, since to me Thinlines sound like a Campbell's soup can with rubber bands on it. The Bluesboy body has generous routing on either side of the center spine, which of course remains solid to anchor the neck and bridge, etc. And because it's hollow, you do have to watch for feedback issues that a Tele don't have. On the other hand, the hollow construction puts a different tonal palate at your disposal, approaching that of a Gibson ES-335, but with the ergonomics of a Telecaster. The ASAT bears closest sonic resemblence to its Telecaster brethern when using the bridge pickup. Neither worse nor better, just ...different.

Beware that Telecaster and ASAT parts are NOT interchangeable. But then neither are the sounds. This guitar complements the Tele, but does not replace it.

G&L customer service? I called the number on their website and left a voice mail message inquiring about string gauges. That was two weeks ago, and I have yet to hear back.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

As the headline states "nice guitar". I had played several solid body Tele style guitars and wanted the versatility of the semi-hollow. Surprisingly light weight. It is nearly neck heavy - so a good non-slip strap is required if you play standing. The neck is a traditional "C" shape and the frets are larger - typical of Fender fret boards. The tone and volume knobs turn easily and are knurled for additional ease of gripping. It is easy to bar chord to the 11th fret with each note clear. The intonation at the 12th fret on the one I received was only off on 2 strings. No fret buzz anywhere along the neck. I am still evaluating this particular guitar as each guitar is different and I am considering whether another might have a slightly better action/feel. I ordered the Orange w/ maple fret board and it is a beauty. The fit and finish is remarkable. Very satisfied with this purchase. The packaging was solid and double boxed. UPS delivery was prompt. I have played for over 50 years and gig regularly. My primary genre is 50's/60's pop with some country, jazz/blues, and softer rock ballads. This is a nice addition to my Hagstrom Tremar Viking Deluxe and my trio of acoustics (Guild 1980 12 string and a pair of Ovations - Legend 1717 deep bowl and a super shallow Celebrity). With this G&L semi-hollow and my Super Shallow Ovation, I can gig with only 2 guitars and cover everything I play from surf to folk to dirty blues to 50's classics. The tone of this G&L is amp dependent - meaning a clean amp like a Blues Jr will bring out the brightness more, where an acoustic P/A like a Bose L1 through a pedal board will emphasize the humbucker and hollow body bass. Versatile guitar with good action, beautiful fit and finish, and a great value.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I like this guitar's overall feel, great tone, quality, and lightness. Weight becomes an issue as you "mature". The blonde/rosewood Bluesboy I received weighs in at 6lbs.1.5oz. That's pretty light. It's also very resonant.
The fit and finish was very good. No flaws, just a little heavy on the poly finish. Overall craftmanship is very good. Asian manufactured. The tuners stay in tune, the electronics seem real solid. The pickups are very good. The neck profile is comfortable. I have medium sized hands.
The neck humbucking pickup sounds a bit dark but musical.
The MFD bridge pickup is the star of the show. I was prepared to replace this pickup right off the bat with a more traditional alnico single coil before I even received the guitar. After giving the MFD a good listen to though, I absolutely love it. The tone is a tiny bit less spanky than a Fender Tele bridge pickup, but the range of tone is far wider than a Tele pickup. It blends very well with the Paul Gagon-designed AS4255C neck pickup.
The frets could use a tad more polishing but the edges are smooth. I had to adjust the truss rod a bit to achieve more relief to stop a few frets from buzzing. Easy fix. MF doesn't set up guitars like some other venders do, so the set up you receive is right from the factory production line. My Bluesboy needed minor tweeking.
I've had this guitar since Thanksgiving and play it often, so I guess I like it. OK, I really like it. The Mary Kay Blonde finish on Swamp Ash and dark rosewood fretboard are very seductive as is the tone.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I purchased the Blonde/Rosewood version during the Veterans Day sale for 15% off. Considering the price point of this imported product, the quality and construction of the guitar was immaculate; well worth twice what I paid. The 18:1 Tuners work wonderfully. The bridge has 6 individually adjustable "Brass" Saddles; the intonation was right on and the saddle heights matched the radius of the fret board to a tee. You get a Nice Medium C Neck with true to spec medium jumbo frets; not the low rider Squire frets. The nut work was dam near perfect. The top circle fret board markers set perfectly between the 3rd and 4th strings; excellent neck alignment. The neck and pocket fit were really tight; I couldn't get a piece of notebook paper between them. Unlike many Fender necks, the neck profile is carved right to the neck pocket, so you have no wasted neck wood getting in the way of upper fret access. The frets could use some polishing, but at this price point, very decent fret work and edges. The guitar I received had a fairly low action already with no fret buzz that I could detect. The volume and tone pots I looked at internally, were "audiophile" quality and feel and some of the best I have ever seen on any guitar. The pickups, as they state, are very powerful and balanced; the overall sound is one of mellowness. The paint job is stunning; I couldn't find a dent, a scratch or a chip anywhere. The whole guitar reeks of quality everywhere, right down to the input jack. Very impressive axe. I can see why Leo and George left Fender; they wanted to build quality instruments and this one doesn't disappoint. Great value for the money.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

For the price, you can't beat G&L. After all, they're building old Fender quality instruments that I'd put up against modern Fender instruments any day. This guitar is extremely versatile. The bridge pickup is way noisey and squeals with high gain. Will probably try a wax pot. Definitely get the Tele spank with a hotter flavor. The neck pickup is EXTREMELY warm. Think Cream era Clapton SG warm. Can definitely do jazz while making the jazz heads do a double take when they notice it's not a jazz box. Not for metal or super heavy rock. Anything and everything else is right in this guitar's wheelhouse.

Beautifully crafted. The orange transparent finish is gorgeous.
Pickups are terrific- they offer a tremendous amount of variation in tone on a single guitar.
The setup was perfect right out of the box. That doesn't usually happen on a guitar at this price point. Intonation was dead on. Even the strings felt new, without the typical gritty stuff you often find on an import.
Such a great deal! Absolutely no regrets on this purchase!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Right out of the box without any finish blems or neck flaws. The first set up required simple fine tuning of the keys and the strings were good quality too. This is a keeper guitar which proves someone cared to do things right at the factory when making this one a player guitar!

Yes, I am tempted to buy another one in a different color and own two of them. Played at a dance and another player told me if it had the maple neck it would be his before I packed it to go home.

That player also plays a G&L and his was made in the USA costing lots more but he loved this guitar and the sound it provided us that night.

The pickup design is hot so I used a little more bass control to make it sound even better. It stayed in tune for three hours of solid playing the first gig it was used.

The frets are jumbo size and easy to play with perfect string alignment to frets. This guitar is more fun to play than the Jazzmaster design models. It stays in tune and it is lighter in weight because of the great semi hollow design. Plus it looks like a Tele but sounds even better for all your rythym needs.

Before you buy more than one Tele to play rythym and lead, try one of these, you won't regret owning one!

Yes, it is great for all types of music and yes it has that FAMOUS G&L sustain that is hard to beat for the price of this TRIBUTE MODEL.

Don't overlook this beauty especially at this price!

Mine came with a loose jack, and a wiring short on the Bridge Pickup. It has a nasty buzz. The Neck Pickup was O.K. WAY too much noise for me playing out. I sent it back.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

This is the first guitar I've ever bought where I actually feel like it belongs to me. I've been through an embarrassing amount of guitars trying to find one that fit. One that could be be played without buzzing. One that felt significant in my hands. One that was beautiful. This ASAT delivered in every department, and delivered very well. Fenders, in my experience, are consistently the buzziest guitars in the world, even with repeated different professional setups. I had given up on Telecasters and Strats, but I found out about G&L being Leo Fender's final company. I decided to give it a try and, well, I'm never looking back. This ASAT, which is the equivalent of a Tele Thinline, not only kicks any MIM's butt, but stands as a unique spin on any Tele-style guitar. The humbucker on the neck is delectable sounding, with nice punch and sting, while the bouncy single coil properly creates that famous Tele twang. The combination of rosewood and swamp ash sounds heavenly and warm! I can see this being my friend for a long time. It is my only guitar, and I'm proud of it. The *only* flaw would be some imperfections with the finish in which it trapped some black specs underneath, which kind of look like little ink smudges in a book. But it's all about how you appraise it- my guitar just has beauty marks (yeah yeah, roll you eyes). My last comment will be on the set-up, which is the best I've ever had on ANY guitar, even done by local professionals. Just buy it. I got the one that looks like a hunk of plywood, and I don't regret it for a second. Gorgeous.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

My first "good' guitar was a Fender Tele which I sold back in the early 70's. I always wanted another one, but I wanted something a little easier on the back; I'm 64. I ordered the Natural Swamp Body at the Veteran's Day sale, so I got 15% off; just a beautiful guitar and very light weight. I couldn't find a defect anywhere. Excellent electronics and great tuners.Comfortable Medium C shaped (this is not a shedder or "thin C" neck). The above average nut and fret work were really nice at this price point. Good solid instrument, tight neck pocket. The intonation and saddle heights were right on. But, be careful if you try to upgrade or retro-fit the instrument because the G&L necks and pick guards are not interchangeable with their Fender counterparts. Most users will find the guitar adequate enough as is.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Excellent guitar. Looks great, but more importantly, plays great. Great warmth from the hollowed out chambers. The pickups are excellent at handling effect pedals and can play just about any variety of music (don't let the appearance fool you. This guitar can play it all). The quality of the parts and craftsmanship is much higher than any MIM Fender you'll find, which means this guitar is built to last. The only downside for me is that the guitar body is TOO light, and I have some neck diving issues going on. A good strap or some sort of counter-weight system can easily correct this, though it is worth mentioning.

I love this guitar. Came with a little bit of fret buzz on the low E String, but it was an easy fix. For blues, country, gospel... You will not find a better bang for your buck. I don't really recommend it for real heavy music though.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

the guitar came to me as a level 2 used guitar and it was in immaculate condition. MF did a very good job here.
This setup was great and it is very playable. The uses are many and the hardware, electronics, paint and Pup's are all top notched.
But what is missing is the case to store this baby in. I hope that Fender has not gone cheap and stopped providing G&L guitars with the top quality Gig bags as was traditional with G & L.
