OVERVIEW

Gorgeous tonewoods, bolt-on maple neck and G&L pickups.

One look and you know this ASAT is killer. It's fired up with twin chrome-covered alnico humbuckers - designed by G&L's Paul Gagon - mounted in a bound, flame maple-topped mahogany body (swamp ash on Butterscotch Blonde). This new axe takes the iconic ASAT further into heavy territory while retaining the feel and playability that have made the ASAT a perennial favorite among players.

The ASAT Deluxe Carved Top sports an easy-playing 1-5/8" nut-width neck, a classic C-shaped back and 12" fingerboard radius to make deep bends a breeze. Holding it down on the other end is a G&L Saddle Lock bridge designed by Leo Fender for comfort and singing sustain. The Gagon-designed pickups are split via a push/pull tone pot to offer everything from jangly single-coil tones to gritty blues to scorching leads. Case sold separately.

Can't say enough good things about this guitar! It feels and plays like a guitar 3x/4x the price. For someone looking for a quality instrument on a limited budget (like me) you've found it here. My only call out is the humbucker in the bridge position does not "put out" as much as my Seymour Duncan Super Distortion on my Washburn. That's not what I purchased it for though; and I'm sure there is a pedal out there that will compensate.

I was a bit ticked that the input jack and tone knob were loose and I had to crack it open to tighten. Minor complaint though. Also, no manual?

I had the same experience as "weekend warrior." The high E string kept falling off the fretboard when using any vibrato or bending of the string. The guitar is also noticeably neck-heavy, and you have to compensate for that while playing. Guitar needed a set up, and I ran into a couple of frets that were high around the 11 - 13th fret area, so I couldn't get the strings as low as I really wanted. Tone in the coil-split mode was muddy. I am a long term, regular customer of MF, and enjoy their products. Sadly, this one had to be returned.... Would not recommend this guitar.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I just bought the cherry sunburst and it looks stunning! The flamed maple top is to die for ! The looks and feel rivals my US Tele and it complements my cherry sunburst Les Paul marvelously. The carved top/humbuckers combination is ideal. Even unplugged the guitar sounds great. I mostly play hard rock and classic rock with it and with the proper amp setting it sounds great ! Lots of sustain and in my opinion good definition from these pups.

The split coil option makes this instrument a very versatile one. When splitting the bridge pick up there is a significant and normal volume drop. It does not equal the brightness and tone my tele bridge pickup (in my case Alnico II) but still does the trick if called upon. This is perfect for a little venue where you don't have room to bring many guitars.

The only downfall was that the action was pretty high out from the box. Nothing a little setup won't fix.

This guitar is a great asset to any rig and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a great versatile instrument without breaking the bank. Did I mentioned that it looks stunning… ;)

So far I really like this guitar. I did have an issue serious enough to send the first guitar I recieved back and exchange it for the same guitar. Musicians Friend was great to work with on the exchange and so far everything seems good to go. I really like the feel of the neck, and the frets seem pretty smooth(though I think my sons Jackson Dinky's frets are smoother). I mainly pratice sitting down and this guitar sits and feel great, not to heavy, well balanced, Hope to play it for years to come !! Was blessed of the Lord to get such a nice instrument to learn on and to get it at such a great price, thanks Musicians Friend

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I got ahold of the swamp ash butterscotch blonde one, and she's gorgeous! I had the fortune to play it before buying, and even unplugged it sang beautifully. Nice satisfying crunch plugged in. There were a few discolored spots underneath the lacquered top, and it's got an input jack that tends to come loose but other than those qual control issues, frets could use dressing. Neck feels good, tuning gears work well, and the tones are just amazing.
Can't give a 5-star because of those QC concerns but make no mistake, you'll pay hundreds more for the premium features you're getting in this one.
The one I got was setup great, the Indonesia factory makes top notch work. check out forum reviews, a lot of folks seem to say the same.
This is the one I'm breaking in to be my main guitar, I love it every bit as much as my USA Strat.
I would not compare this to a tele, though the split coil is a cool feature, sound wise you will find it to be its own beast. My first G&L and I am starting to think I will be a fan of this company for a long time!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I pulled the plug on this after what I perceived to be color option that G&L does not include on its website (but is way more interesting than the standard colors) dropped to what I considered to be a ridiculously low price. I had played these guitars at the local music shop, but the deal on MF was too good to pass up.

The negative: Contrary to a lot of comments, mine was way off on the factory setup. Nut needed significant work and the frets needed to be leveled. But the neck was straight and aligned properly.

I have owned everything from Mexican Fenders to G&L USA limited edition. This guitar exceeds every one of them in fun to play quotient. The humbuckers do give you the opportunity to get a Les Paul sound out of a tele, and at first I was buying the comments about the tapped positions only being a novelty, but I have decided that I love them for their own unique sound. I play this almost exclusively clean with a little compression, and you can get amazing variation in expression depending on attack. I think this has the potential to be a great reggae / funk machine.

Did I mention I love the neck finish? And the frets are very smooth and cut right. It seems very solidly built, stays in tune, and the carved maple top is not only great to look at but produces great sounds. I have never bought into the notion that to get great sustain the neck has to be glued in and this guitar is living proof.

I can't believe there has ever been or will be a better guitar for the price.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

This guitar caught my eye right away, but I've got a thing for blondes (and that swamp ash tone). Gorgeous butterscotch finish, the binding on this one was nice.
I tested how it felt in my hands, nice and comfy in all aspects. Good heft to it, played every note on the fretboard to see if there was any dead spots or buzzing before I started strumming chords. It sounded sweet unplugged, so right there I was already stoked.

Holy catfish, this thing sings. I don't have a Tele to compare this to, and since the model I bought isn't the maple top/mahogany combo it doesn't sound like a Les Paul either, it is its own animal. If you can, this is one you have to play yourself to see if it clicks with you or not so see if it's available locally to try out. I picked up a showroom play test model so I got a great deal on mine. I almost pulled the trigger on it unseen a few times here when the price would occasionally drop, and I will add to the glowing reviews here.
I am always wary of 5-star reviews thinking that just because I own it I need to validate giving in to my Gear Acquisition Syndrome.
So the negs on this guitar - a few discolored spots on the wood where the finish applied over it will preserve the defect forever. Adds character, yes, but may be a deal breaker if you're hung up on looks. Intonation was a little off, if you get look at videos posted online for instruction on how to fix this yourself - highly recommended. The frets on mine needed a little dressing, and check the height setting on the pickups - may need to adjust.
Neck feels great to play on, build quality is every bit as remarkable as a guitar costing twice as much.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar a couple weeks ago on sale....it's my first G&L. Out of the box the guitar setup needed a tweak, but I'm not surprised after shipping through some nasty winter conditions. After setup, the action is low and smooth, not the lowest of all my guitars, but very comfortable.
The pickups sound good. If I could compare them to something, I would say they sound a lot like Fender's blacktop pickups, but a bit less muddy....which is a really good thing, as I think the Fender blacktop pickups sound great aside from being a bit muddy. Be sure to experiment with pickup height on this guitar, as small changes made some big differences in tone. As other reviews noted, when the pickups are coil tapped, the volume drops considerably (this is expected), HOWEVER, I will add this, you can get a WONDERFUL clean tone with the pickups tapped and the pickup selector on both pickups. It's a very interesting tone with a neat acoustic quality.
The neck feels great....I love the 12" radius with the 25 1/2" scale. Also, the fret edges on my guitar were dressed perfectly....in fact, better than any Mexican Fender I've every played, and better than many American Fenders....the neck edges are completely smooth....no issues there.
Craftsmanship is very good....the guitar feels very solid and well built, and the finish is beautiful. (Mine is the cherry sunburst)
Overall, for the price I paid, I'm very happy with this purchase. This guitar isn't perfect, but if you can get this on sale, it is a fantastic bargain. I own a lot of Gibsons and Fenders, and this guitar can hang in there with most of them. Would I pay the regular price for this guitar? Probably not....I think I'd get a Fender Blacktop, but for the sale price, the G&L is definitely a no brainer.

Primary guitar has been an American Standard Telecaster, playing rhythm in a cover band. Primarily rock, blues, country and red dirt. Needed something with a little more meat for some of the rock songs we cover. For the low price- and with recommendation from our lead guitarist, I took a chance. This guitar is very versatile- it can play clean with amazing sustain, but also get dirty when you need it. It is feather light- but produces a full sound. Great product and fun to play.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

WOW I LOVE THIS GUITAR =)
I read some of the horror stories on hear about what some people received and I must say it looks like they checked this one out before shipping.
It was triple boxed and secured with paper and foam padding. Flawless.
I bought the Butterscotch and it is DE-licious.
the color and the wood grain are exactly what I was hoping for. The neck has a polished super smooth feel similar to my Tele only wider.
The action is low without any fret buzz.
The frets are smooth with no sharp edges.
Intonation is perfect all up and down the fret board.
PU's are Great providing a wide set of tone options from blues country chicken picken and rock and roll.
I am playing through a Vox Night Train 1x12 and this guitar provide me with that classic 60's vintage tone I was looking for.
I own a Gretsch hollow body, Telecaster, Les Paul electric and each one has its on distinct tonal identity. This G&L is like a fat sounding Tele mixed with a bit of Les Paul.

This is a replacement guitar I received having to send a flawed version back. The guitar itself, is the most comfortable guitar I have ever played. If you are looking for a Telecaster sound, this is not the guitar for you. I bought this, because I wanted a "hybrid" type guitar, and that is exactly what this is. It has its own unique sound. I think the demonstration video, is very close to what you will actually get. This is one beautiful guitar. I have some very high end guitars, that cannot match the sustain of this one. Tone wise, I will call it hybrid. Someone else mentioned on their write up, that the coil tap is more of a novelty than anything else. I can agree with that. I wanted a guitar with a Telecaster shape, without the twangy sound. That is exactly what I received. Stays in tune real well, and the neck just has a great feel to it. I got it at a very good sale price, so hard to complain about anything. The only thing I will mention, "I am a perfectionist and take extreme caution and care with all of my stuff", when restringing, you have to be super careful when removing or inserting the new strings. They have a tendency to drag across the body, in which could cause scratches. Not a big issue, just have to be a bit more careful. I will close by saying, me personally, I am very happy with the purchase. I did receive the guitar without a warranty registration, which makes me think, maybe it was an open box, and I was supposed to be buying a new guitar? This I will never know, as the guitar itself is in great condition. Musicians Friend did take care of this for me. The customer service is great. I will reiterate again, listen to the demo. video, and that is what you will get. God bless, and great day!
