G&L

Gorgeous tonewoods, bolt-on maple neck and G&L pickups.

One look and you know this ASAT is killer. It’s fired up with twin chrome-covered alnico humbuckers – designed by G&L’s Paul Gagon – mounted in a bound, flame maple-topped mahogany body (swamp ash on Butterscotch Blonde). This new axe takes the iconic ASAT further into heavy territory while retaining the feel and playability that have made the ASAT a perennial favorite among players.

The ASAT Deluxe Carved Top sports an easy-playing 1-5/8” nut-width neck, a classic C-shaped back and 12” fingerboard radius to make deep bends a breeze. Holding it down on the other end is a G&L Saddle Lock bridge designed by Leo Fender for comfort and singing sustain. The Gagon-designed pickups are split via a push/pull tone pot to offer everything from jangly single-coil tones to gritty blues to scorching leads.

Case sold separately.

Can't say enough good things about this guitar! It feels and plays like a guitar 3x/4x the price. For someone looking for a quality instrument on a limited budget (like me) you've found it here. My only call out is the humbucker in the bridge position does not "put out" as much as my Seymour Duncan Super Distortion on my Washburn. That's not what I purchased it for though; and I'm sure there is a pedal out there that will compensate.

I was a bit ticked that the input jack and tone knob were loose and I had to crack it open to tighten. Minor complaint though. Also, no manual?

This is my first experience with G&L and sadly it's not good. The guitar came to me defective - the high E string barely hangs over the end of the frets, so when playing, the string falls off the edge of the fretboard. In looking at possibly re-aligning the neck, I found the neck pocket tight with no room to make an adjustment. Bottom line, had to send it back. This is no reflection on MFI, they're great. I'm debating on whether or not to re-order since I'm always willing to give folks a second chance. Was so in hopes this was going to be a positive experience...if I do decide to re-order, I'll post an update. BTW, I resist giving products unfavorable reviews, but in this situation, I feel obligated to inform those considering this guitar.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I picked this up on a stupid deal of the day for 399.00. I bought it for a flip, however, when I received it, I decided to keep it. I love the finish and the feel of the guitar. Normally, you would be paying more for all the features this guitar has. I love the carved top and how the back of guitar is carved for comfort. I played the USA version and really can't tell a difference, 1700.00 verses 400.00 It was a no brainer. I was really surprised how good a value this was. The action was low enough for me when the guitar arrived, set up was very good. I'm unable to find any flaws.

    "Not a good beginning" Update

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

This is an update to my previous review "Not a good beginning". I decided to exchange the first defective guitar for another and glad I did. The new one is "money". Neck setup is perfect with smooth fret ends and the strings align correctly from the nut to the bridge. Finish is also perfect with no issues. Sound is better than you might expect from an instrument in this price range and the "feel" of the electronics (haven't opened the back yet) is solid. Bottom line, this is a great guitar for the money. The initial issue I had with the first guitar would give the perception of inconsistent quality control on G&L's part. MFI on the otherhand is world class. They have certainly stepped up their customer service and that sets them apart from other web retailers out there. And, as someone mentioned in a previous review, Tyler is "the man". I've dealt with Tyler several times recently and I have always been pleased with his providing consistent outstanding customer service. Kudo's to Tyler.

Bought this guitar used/mint from Musician's Friend as it was not available in Butterscotch Blonde in the UK. They said Mint and it was! When a minor fault was found with the tone knob Tyler
made a small financial adjustment for me. Great
customer service - better than many UK firms that
I'll refrain from naming; it has been a pleasure.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

Might be surprised at my comments and rating seeming contrary. But with the G&L name and this particular guitar at such a low price I thought I would take a chance. At the first practice I took it to, I could not get a decent tone in any pickup position. I was so disappointed I was seriously considering sending it back right away. But I decided to take it to a guitar technician that I trust.

He modified the bridge pickup which was so low from the strings he was surprised it was picking up anything. He modified a Gibson pickup bezel and placed it underneath the factory bezel to raise it up another quarter inch. The bridge pickup is now less than 1/8 inch from the strings and closer when you press the strings which in the bridge is fine. He also lowered the neck pickup which reduced some of the heavy lows and low mids.

The pickup switching is now balanced in output across all three positions and the pull single coil is also much closer in volume as well and balanced. Now this thing sounds fantastic. If it had come from the factory or after the G&L setup before shipping this way I would have been pleased from day 1. Glad I had a great guitar tech to prevent me from shipping back a good guitar at a great price.

Hope to enjoy it now for years to come.

Also for anyone who has suffered from the rosewood sharp edge problem which this guitar does not have right now, my tech said this wood needs oil. It's not the frets sticking out, it is the wood shrinking. He suggests Old English oil about every third string change.

Hope this may help others who may have a gem and not know it regardless of where it is made.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

Love this thing! Pulled it out of the box and started playing it for an hour. I am blown away by how good this sounds! I ran it through a G-Dec as well as my DT-25/Orange cab and it can go from fat to spanky. Its been on stage twice in front of 150-200 people and inspires me to play more. You might think that sounds silly but hey! These pickups rock. The best part is I bought it on Stupid deal of the day!!!!!! What!

I have a custom shop Strat as well and have been playing for 30 plus years and several guitars. Honestly for my ears, taste and touch this is a winner. Sounds as good as guitars costing 5x what I paid.

Needed a slight adjustment. Guitars that travel times zones will need a little tune-up. guitars in the shop get TLC before the customer see's it so that should be expected.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

all of the volume output is in the final 1\3 turn of the knob, 500k pots might improve the sound over these 250K pots ,however I had to back the volume down a touch from 10 because of the whining, which can be disturbing in a recording session. The guitar played right out of the box,but you will want to lower the action a bit, played in tune and the push pull split pickup feature is a very nice addition, was difficult to return ,the cherry sunburst is beautiful. I played it thru a Fender super reverb amp, so I do not know what it will sound like thru a smaller amp.The neck width and length has a great feel to it, it has the same gloss finish on the back. I considered changing the pots, but, some routing is required for the height of american 500K pots...just wish it had a little more umph!
