G&L

Mahogany body with flame maple top, bolt-on maple neck and G&L pickups.

One look and you know this ASAT is killer. It’s fired up with twin chrome-covered Alnico humbuckers – designed by G&L’s Paul Gagon – mounted in a bound, flame maple-topped mahogany body. This new axe takes the iconic ASAT further into heavy territory while retaining the feel and playability that have made the ASAT a perennial favorite among players.

The ASAT Deluxe Carved Top sports an easy-playing 1-5/8” nut-width neck, a classic C-shaped back and 12” fingerboard radius to make deep bends a breeze. Holding it down on the other end is a G&L Saddle Lock bridge designed by Leo Fender for comfort and singing sustain. The Gagon-designed pickups are split via a push/pull tone pot to offer everything from jangly single-coil tones to gritty blues to scorching leads.

Case sold separately.

Can't say enough good things about this guitar! It feels and plays like a guitar 3x/4x the price. For someone looking for a quality instrument on a limited budget (like me) you've found it here. My only call out is the humbucker in the bridge position does not "put out" as much as my Seymour Duncan Super Distortion on my Washburn. That's not what I purchased it for though; and I'm sure there is a pedal out there that will compensate.

I was a bit ticked that the input jack and tone knob were loose and I had to crack it open to tighten. Minor complaint though. Also, no manual?

I bought this as the stupid deal of the day. I liked the look of the guitar. It is nice and light too. It is made in Indonesia. Had I known that I wouldn't have bought it. The set up was good. The frets were a little sharp on the ends. The sound is what I couldn't get over. Everything I did it just wouldn't get out of the "muddy" tone. I tried several rehearsals and comparing it to my other guitars. I ended up sending it back. What do you expect. The STOD was for a really good price. Well, it played like a guitar with a really good (low) price. I think for some it would be great but it would end up never seeing stage time with me.
I weighed the option of putting better P'ups in it but would probably end up paying more than I paid for it putting nice ones in. Think i'll stick to buying a guitar I can put my hands on first before paying for it.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

This is a good deal. The guitar is well-built and solid, with good, workmanlike hardware. The neck is wide, flat, and satin unfinished, with jumbo frets - very rock guitar. The contoured body is nice, and well-finished.

This is no Tele, tone-wise, even with the coil splitter. The pickups are - unremarkable. They're not bad, they're just there. I have been getting a lot of squeal from the lead pickup, at fairly modest stage volume. This will necessitate a replacement, but I was likely to do that, just for tone.

The input jack comes loose, but, that's an easy fix.

For the price that I paid on sale, I'm delighted.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I like this guitar better than I like my strat or entry level les paul. At the regular price this guitar is a fantastic guitar and a good value. This is not a typical tele not at all. This is a tele that can multi-task. It does not sound twangy. I have been playing since the early sixties and this the guitar is what I have been wanting. I am always skeptical of reviews, but this is my honest opinion. Get one and enjoy. Leo lives on in this axe.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar after much consideration. The problem was, I had owned Fenders in the past and wasn't terribly impressed with their neck dimensions. I hadn't played a G&L product, but the sale price was just too good to pass up. I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a whirl.

At first, I found the neck shape to be a little odd. I felt like the it was too thin closer to the nut, and I wasn't sure if I liked the shoulder cut toward the edges of the fretboard. I guess I still argue with myself over this, but after a few days, I got more used to it. I prefer a fatter neck, but this isn't a Gibson. This is something different, for sure.

It took a little while, but this guitar really won me over. It won me over very well, and after a few band practices with this guitar, I realized its quality is far higher than my first impressions told me. The dynamics of this instrument's sound and its construction -- it's pickups, electronics, bridge design, neck playability, fret dressing, and everything else -- provide a surprisingly high-quality platform on which you can build new, more interesting songs.

I was impressed with this guitar, and I plan to keep it for a long time.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

REVIEW UPDATE FROM PREVIOUS REVIEW - OK, this is now about 10 days since I've had this guitar and I still love the sound and the sustain. HOWEVER still doesn't stay in tune for more than a couple days whereas my Epi LP stays in tune for MONTHS. I can't blame the machines because they are all out of tune the exact same amount so I'm thinking now its a neck thing. Keep in mind its winter and I have forced air heat - very dry in my house, maybe that has something to do with it. One thing I didn't mention in my first review of this guitar is its surprisingly THIN BODY. I personally kinda like the chunky thick wood body of a Fender Tele and through the body string configuration. This G&L has neither and yet like I said has amazing rich tone and sustain. Also for all of you who KNOW your guitars, in the Glossy Black it looks exactly like a MIJ Fender Aerodyne... Nice. On another note, ONE THING I really didn't appreciate is they forgot to intonate the guitar at the factory. All the strings were sharp at the 12th fret and its a good thing I know how to intonate or I would have to pay a guitar tech for a set-up, NOT COOL!! Still an excellent value. A great tip you'll get from the WebbMan is IF you're not sure how to intonate - look it up on youtube. I just saved you the cost of a set-up. Like that? Please make sure to click that you found my review helpful. Thanks.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I'm loving my new ASAT Deluxe! Right out of the box, it played well. Once my strings were fully stretched out after a few days, it was staying in tune much better, and the oils on my hands were helping to wear in the back of the neck, making it even easier to play.

I really like the sound of the pickups. I've got a G&L Rampage as well, and that has a custom wound Alnico V Jerry Cantrell pickup that's wound MUCH hotter, with a lot more chug to it for that hard rock/metal sound, whereas the Alnico V's in this ASAT Deluxe are less mid range and more bottom end, making it good for blues rock, while still able to attain a bit of chug to it, and sounding awesome when pushed with an OD pedal in front.

On clean channel, I love the sound of both pickups on together; gets a great jazz tone..and that neck pickup sounds amazing! can be great for funk, too. the coil splitting is cool and sounds good, but obviously doesn't sound too much like a tele. still has some twang to it, but yes the volume does drop out a bit when doing switching to single coil mode.

other than that, i think this is a great guitar for a great price, and it's now a part of my G&L family! (Rampage Tribute, ASAT Deluxe Tribute, USA L2000 and Tribute JB4!)

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

OK, when I saw the G&L Asat Deluxe selling new from my favorite guitar gear seller Musician's Friend at a unreal LOW price I felt like I won the lottery because I had my eye on this exact guitar for a while. When it arrived I was a little disappointed because the low price point was for the glossy black NOT the Trans Black or Trans Red showing off the nice maple flame top. ALSO - there was a tiny DING in the finish about the size of a pencil point, and strangely enough the edges of the pickups were scratched. Not the front so if you don't look for it, you won't see it. SO FINALLY I PLUGGED IT IN and right away you could hear a rich quality tone coming out of my Fender Vibra Champ tube amp. Due to the COIL TAP SWITCH this guitar can do it all. It has 3 tones on the single coil side and 3 more tones when set to the humbucker side. You get anywhere from a twangy Strat to a heavy Gib LP and best of all is the SUSTAIN. Just play any chord and you can feel the guitar vibrate in your hands... Nice. MY ONLY CONCERN is if this baby stays in-tune. I just got it new out of the box and maybe it takes a while for the new strings to stretch BUT if its the tuners - then I have to spring for a new set of machines... Not Cool. Too soon to tell. Hope its just the new strings.
