OVERVIEW

Gorgeous tonewoods, bolt-on maple neck and G&L pickups.

One look and you know this ASAT is killer. It's fired up with twin chrome-covered alnico humbuckers - designed by G&L's Paul Gagon - mounted in a bound, flame maple-topped mahogany body (swamp ash on Butterscotch Blonde). This new axe takes the iconic ASAT further into heavy territory while retaining the feel and playability that have made the ASAT a perennial favorite among players.

The ASAT Deluxe Carved Top sports an easy-playing 1-5/8” nut-width neck, a classic C-shaped back and 12” fingerboard radius to make deep bends a breeze. Holding it down on the other end is a G&L Saddle Lock bridge designed by Leo Fender for comfort and singing sustain. The Gagon-designed pickups are split via a push/pull tone pot to offer everything from jangly single-coil tones to gritty blues to scorching leads.

Case sold separately.

Can't say enough good things about this guitar! It feels and plays like a guitar 3x/4x the price. For someone looking for a quality instrument on a limited budget (like me) you've found it here. My only call out is the humbucker in the bridge position does not "put out" as much as my Seymour Duncan Super Distortion on my Washburn. That's not what I purchased it for though; and I'm sure there is a pedal out there that will compensate.

I was a bit ticked that the input jack and tone knob were loose and I had to crack it open to tighten. Minor complaint though. Also, no manual?

I had the same experience as "weekend warrior." The high E string kept falling off the fretboard when using any vibrato or bending of the string. The guitar is also noticeably neck-heavy, and you have to compensate for that while playing. Guitar needed a set up, and I ran into a couple of frets that were high around the 11 - 13th fret area, so I couldn't get the strings as low as I really wanted. Tone in the coil-split mode was muddy. I am a long term, regular customer of MF, and enjoy their products. Sadly, this one had to be returned.... Would not recommend this guitar.

It's a great looking, sounding and feeling guitar. I've had plenty of guitars in my day and evern owned a few G&L's, This is a solid, good quality guitar and combines the best of both worlds. It's like having a Tele and Les Paul at the same time. Get one before they are gone!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar at a very reasonable price. I read the reviews, watched the video, and I was sold. I have bought many things from Musician's Friend over the years, and this was the first problem I have encountered. I just received a lousy guitar. The high E string was way too close to the edge, so very hard to play without it dropping off of the fretboard. The other problem; the saddle screws or adjustment screws for height if you will, well, they were different sizes on the same saddle? Go figure. Anyway, called at 9:50pm eastern time, alerted Royce of the problem, and I just can't say enough about the customer service. They did not have another guitar like I ordered, "color wise" so, Royce juggled some figures and I ended up getting a much prettier, higher grade guitar of the same make and model, for what I will say a very reasonable increase in price. I need to say this as well. Royce instructed me as to what to do to return the guitar, I explained I live way out in the woods, so he scheduled a residential pick-up here where I live, at no additional cost. Somewhere along the line, the quality assurance team for G & L went astray on this particular guitar. And, the result was a guitar that should have never been seen or sold, got through the system. Nobody is perfect, so something like this can, and will happen once in a while. Bottom line; couldn't be more satisfied with the service that was provided to me by Musician"s Friend. I have received the replacement already, and I will write an additional review on that one, when the review e-mail arrives. Customer service means a whole lot to me as a buyer, you hope you never have a problem when ordering, but I just couldn't say enough good things about Musician's Friend, and the way they handled my misfortune. You will be hearing much more about the actual guitar, on the replacement. Thanks Musician's Friend!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

        Great sustain, well balanced tone.
The pickups were set too high when I got the guitar, and sounded muddy and uninspiring. I lowered them by 1/4" or so and it made a huge improvement in the tone. The split coil sound is more of a novelty than anything else.
This guitar has the best sustain of any instrument I've ever owned, it really allows one to lay back and let the notes ring, but the guitar still has a decent dynamic range too.
The frets could have been polished a bit better, but beyond that I can't think of anything negative to say about this guitar; it doesn't sound, look or play like an inexpensive guitar
aside from the so-so fret dressing.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

Background: I've been playing for more than twenty years, mostly bass and some guitar. My main style leans towards metal/progressive. Bought this guitar to replace a souped up PRS SE Singlecut. I required a cheap guitar to work on my own material at home.

I picked the gloss black one as the fancy top models were out of my budget. Guitar arrived very well packed. Out of the box set up like a dream. The fit and finish excelent. No sharp/tall frets, no paint problems, pristine condition. The black bound looks very classy, and the carved top gives it a gentle curve that makes it more comfy than the usual flat tele.

Plugged into my computer (Pod Farm throguh a PodGX) and it handled beautifully everything I threw at it, from funk to metal. The singled sounds were very useful. Perhaps the pickups could be a little clearer under distorted chords, but my previous guitar had a Dimarzio Crunchlab in the bridge (which is designed precisely for that scenario, tight and well defined notes under high gain) so that might be coloring my judgement. I might exchange the pickups in the future, but there's no real *need* to do it. The guitar is very versatile and produces lots of pleasant, usable sounds by changing pickup combinations, coil tap, and dialing in/out some volume. Detuned to drop D withouth any issues. The bridge is incredibly solid. I want one for my bass too!

The neck is a dream to play, C profile with the flat-ish 12" radius is more reminescent of Ibanez rather than Fender. Back of the neck is satin finished and very smooth to play, the hand glides effortlessly.

I have only one issue with it, it has a bit of neck dive, which was expected due to the lack of a long upper horn. But the weight is very reasonable (I'm used to lugging a Jazz Bass so the guitar is practically a toy to my shoulder :D). The neck dive should be cured with a better strap.

Overall, I love it. I am amazed that this much guitar can be had for so little money. I've turned into an instant G&L fan, and will probably be looking for a G&L Bass to try when the budget allows.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I've been playing an Epiphone 335 pro and a modded MIM ash body fat strat tuned down one half step the last few years and have been very happy with their performance for moderately priced imported guitars. I just started playing slide, however, and found myself needing another guitar to fill the half step down role of my strat that is now set up for open G tuning as well as being a backup for my 335 should the need arise. I didn't want to spend very much money but I needed the guitar to be both versatile, and good sounding. I had been looking at the Epiphone Genesis Deluxe that was on sale and almost pulled the trigger when this guitar caught my eye. It has a pair of coil tapped, covered humbuckers, a simplified control layout, 25.5 scale (better for down tuning IMHO), a carved mahogany body and a thin, smooth unfinished neck. I have been eyeing blacked-out Fender telecasters for a while now but couldn't justify getting a new guitar just to satisfy a case of GAS but when I saw this beauty on sale I just had to get my hands on her. This is my first G&L guitar and I'm so impressed I really can't believe I got a guitar like this for the price I paid. The neck on this guitar is just great. Thin, fast and comfortable. I feel like I could play barre chords on it all day with no hand fatigue. The body is light and resonant. I played unamplified for a few minutes before I plugged her in and she purred like a kitten. When I plugged her into my guitar rig I got everything from spanky cleans with the coils tapped to a mean, throaty overdrive. The volume and tone controls were smooth and responsive and positioned perfectly for making quick on the fly adjustments and performing volume swells. I was really surprised how good the pickups sounded. I found them to be plenty hot for my uses but not too harsh, there was good note articulation between the strings when playing arpeggios using heavy overdrive. I was planning on switching them out for some Duncan P-Rails but now I don't know. I may keep then in for a while and see what they can do. They're certainly better looking than the P-Rails. I don't know how long MF will keep these beauties in stock at this price but I wouldn't hesitate to by one of the flame top versions for a couple hundred more and I may do so myself just because I like the one I got so much. It's not a fancy or expensive guitar but it's everything I need a guitar to be.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top Electric Guitar:

I'm a progressive hard rock guitarist, but I decided to get back to playing more blues-oriented rock. I got the guitar yesterday and out of the box I fell in love instantly. (I got the gloss black finish on a really great deal.) Then, I started playing it without amplification. There was instant fret buzz on the lower strings. And I also noticed the frets could've been sanded down a little more. But I can go get a setup done at my favorite guitar store and that won't be an issue. After that, I plugged it in and started playing. It's a minor issue, but the single-coil tone mode could be louder while being played clean. That said, hearing this puppy being played through my amp really got me excited. I'm not returning this guitar. The feel is great, the looks are killer, and it plays well minus the fret buzz. (Also, I'm sure I could just change the strings, if nothing else. That helped eliminate the fret buzz I was getting on my Ibanez Gio GAX70 years ago.) I'm glad I got this. And hell, if I get enough money, I may get another one in a different finish.

This is and excellent guitar for both a novice and a professional. This is a guitar that I would use for both the feel, sound and looks. No need to upgrade to a more expensive guitar especially for a starter, this guitar will keep up with anyone's skills, this guitar will grow as your skills improve. Would match this up with any guitar I have ever played. No need to spend thousands if you play out this guitar will certainly show off your talents. When not in use you can display it as a fine piece of furniture. Definitely spend the money for a case to protect this fine finish. Would rate it a 10 out of 10 and I have been playing 40+ years.
