G&L

A simple-to-use tone machine with a beautiful finish and perfectly-matched P-90-type pickups.

The Ascari GTS broke new ground for G&L, and the team of Paul Gagon and Grover Jackson are back with a new flavor that’ll take you back without being another throwback.

The Ascari GT-90 takes all the carefully designed architecture from the GTS and dials up P-90 tone that’s better than ever. Typical P-90-equipped guitars suffer an imbalance between the neck and bridge pickups, forcing you to struggle with dual volume controls to find a balance. Not with the GT-90. Gagon has wound countless P-90 type pickups and used his deep understanding of pickup engineering to create an amazingly well-matched set. With a single volume control, a world of harmonically rich P-90 tone is finally accessible with ease.

Such a guitar should have a classic look, and the Ascari GT-90 delivers with a rich, old-school Tobacco Sunburst finish over its crème-bound mahogany body and neck, reinforced by classic crème pickup covers, gold speed knobs and understated dot inlay. This is the P-90 guitar you’ve dreamed of: superbly balanced tone in an incredibly well-balanced, lightweight instrument.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GT90 Electric Guitar:

The craftsmanship on this guitar is top notch. It is definitely worthy enough to bear George and Leo's initials. The P-90s are thick and chunky. The neck and fret board are comfortable and the playability is awesome. This guitar is as good as one costing five times as much.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GT90 Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar because I wanted something with P90 pickups, and I liked the appearance of the guitar. I also wanted a guitar with a 24 3/4" scale length. This guitar was well worth the price as it was a return, like new condition. It was received just like new and I am very happy with this purchase. Very easy to play and no fret buzz whatsoever. It's a beauty and a definite keeper that sounds and plays real nice.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GT90 Electric Guitar:

Despite being shipped between countries, only one string was half a step out of tune, the rest were fine. I was astounded by how silky smooth the back of the neck felt.
Packaging was much more than I expected too; a long paper snake that I named Archebald.
After I purchased this on a snap decision while I was at work, I was starting to wonder what I got myself into, seems I've never played a G&L instrument, and at the time I've never owned a Fender
The finish was flawless all over, I'm able to reach the high frets without any issue.
The fret ends were smooth and the frets themselves felt smooth as well, nice and polished too.
The headstock inlay is perfectly fit, no flaws there whatsoever, the little things like that make the difference for me.
Once I got it home and plugged it into my Marshall on the clean channel, it felt like smooth milk was flowing from my speakers. I was initially contemplating swapping them out for Nantucket 90's from Bare Knuckle, but I'm so so so happy with these pickups, I don't think I'll do any modifications, which is something coming from myself seems I've made mods to all of my guitars.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GT90 Electric Guitar:

Ok - I don't give 5 stars often, if I could I would give it 4.75. I got this on a STOD because 1)I really like G&L, 2) I don't have an axe with P90s and I wanted something new, 3)these pickups are the same used on the ASAT Jr (that costs about well over a grand), and 4)the STOD price of 3 bills seemed unbeatable.

The quality of the guitar is really great for this price point. Great wood, carved top, binding on the body and neck, and nice headstock inlay. The finish looks very nice - I also have an ASAT tribute in tabacco, but it is swamp ash and the light wood makes it look like a different color. Frets are well done, and the setup was good enough that I don't feel motivate to change it (that is rare for me). Tuners and bridge are rock solid. I can't find a cosmetic flaw anywhere.

Now the sound: I don't have a good P90 reference to know how these pickups rank. In the bridge, I keep finding my self playing AC/DC riffs on the back PU, and they sound great and just spot on. In the middle position, the two single coils seem to humbuck, and the guitar sound very sweet clean. Now the neck PU sounds great for singing leads from about the 12 fret forward, but I really can't find a good use for it on the lower frets. The neck doesn't really do a good jazz tone, and frankly the middle position seems to do a better clean than the neck position alone. The pickups have great single-coil bite, but they sound way bigger an meatier (back to my AC/DC comment) than any single coil I've played. I like good clarity and note seperation, and they are ok/good hear, but they don't knock me out as "great". They don't sound compressed at all, but instead very dynamic and alive - I love it, but just know they play more like monsters rather rather than polite studio gentlemen. Since I like the PU but was not blown-away, that why I said 4.75 stars. Again - a very good sound, but not "dead perfect" (like everything else on the guitar).

All in all, 5 stars. I'm really impressed with the fit and finish - cream binding on tabacco looks outstanding; the tone has tons of attitude (and that middle position has a lot of soulful vibe) the neck is sort of Gibson-ish, not fast but comfortable and cooperative. But, only go for it if you want a P90 sound. You can just pop these out and put in singles or humbuckers because of their strange size. That said, it is worth 5 bills, but not a steal at that price. But, I'm not sure you can do better. If you can get a coupon and get it in the 4 range, its a steal.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GT90 Electric Guitar:

The build on this guitar is great. The finishes are superb and the neck is fast. The tuners are smooth and because of the fixed bridge and set neck, this guitar stays in tune. The pickups are hot and G&L has worked with the tone control to give you a wide spectrum of tones. These pickups are perfectly matched. I also noticed that when I turn the volume up and down, the tone seemed to be uneffected. It is heavier than a strat, but does not seem to be as heavy as an SG. When you have it around your neck it is balanced and you really don't notice the weight. It can sound very smooth for ballads, twangy for country and can crunch for rock and roll. This is a good all around guitar that is definitely above entry level and can be used by beginners or professionals alike.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GT90 Electric Guitar:

I don't usually write product reviews, but I love this guitar and found very few reviews before ordering. First let me say WoW to musicians friend. I ordered this guitar as a stupid deal of the day for 3 bills on wednesday, it arrived on friday. Thats fast!!
I've been playing guitar over thirty years and have owned several nice instruments, but never one with P90's. The P90's and being a G&L is what sold me along with the price. I love G&L's. I own an american Legacy and an import ASAT Classic, both great guitars. G&L's imports are as good as most american made guitars for a third the cost. The Legacy has alnico single coils, while the ASAT has MFD's and the Ascari P90's. All three are very different sounding guitars.
Now to the Ascari. Out of the box the setup was very good. I played it for ten days straight before doing some very minor tweaks. The P90's are louder than I expected but very warm. Perfect for sweet blues and clear and bright enough for jazz. I jammed with some friends playing classic rock and it excelled there as well. I have never been a fan of the necks on most 24-3/4" scale guitars. Gibsons and Epi's to me are like a 2x4. My hands aren't that big and the Ascari with the slim c neck is perfect. Fit and finish are excellent and at 7 pounds, its light. While the body style is a more modern shape, the simple dot neck and classic peg head give it an understated elegance. I think its a very nice looking instrument. Oh yeah, the Tone-Pro bridge is a nice touch as well. I couldn't be happier with it and for the cost I don't think you could find anything comparable. I would have given it a 4-1/2 star rating because nothing is going to be perfect but I just couldn't find anything wrong with it, so 5 stars it is. Great job G&L and musicians friend as well.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GT90 Electric Guitar:

This was an impulse buy. It's hard to pass up some of MF's stupid deals, especially with their return policy. Also, I wanted something with some true P-90's.
I knew this guitar was made in Indonesia which of course I was concerned about and thought I'd probably end up returning it. I was very pleasantly surprised after receiving it that it looked and played so good. I do not see any imperfections in the workmanship. The cream colored binding matching the cream colored P-90's is very cool with the tobacco finish.

The pickups sound good, like they say "well balanced" with each other. They sound more mid-range with not a lot of high end on the bridge which for me is OK. I can't stand "biting" bridge p/u's. Also, the pickup toggle switch is very true and solid.

So, for the price I paid with the Stupid Deal I got...this puppy's not going back....

G&L must keep a pretty close eye on quality control because this one's a winner....

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GT90 Electric Guitar:

I got this on a SDOTD because I always wondered about the P90 sound and I recognized this could be a "sleeper" find. Let's be honest, many traditionalists and brand loyalists will pass this by... it is an odd assembly of influences. An Asian-made 24.75 scale G&L (not really a Fender/G&L heritage) and a distinctly non-Gibson shape (although the P90s and 24.75 mahogany set neck construction are very Gibsonish), it actually looked like a mashup of my favorite features not often found together in P90 guitars.

Cutting to the chase, the P90 sound is everything I hoped (minus the inherent hum), and the fit/finish/playability of the guitar is excellent. I am fussy about setup and found the guitar 100% playable after tuning. My ONLY complaint is the tone speed knob wase loose and I had to expand the split-pot shaft to make it stay on. Also, if pressed on all the way, the knob may rub the finish due to the carved-top.

The set-neck heel is comfortable and all frets reachable (much more than a regular LP). For some reason I did think the guitar would be lighter ... but I would call it medium weight and still comfortable and not heavy.

I have several guitars to pick from in my arsenal and this one will get plenty of use. Thanks G&L for taking an unconventional risk - I like it.
