OVERVIEW

A single-cutaway hollowbody with Filter’Tron™ pickups and Bigsby tremolo.

I really like this guitar - sound, looks, value. I also have one of the earlier 5120 Electromatics and love that guitar too. The 5420 has a slightly livelier, brighter, and even more Gretschy tone than the 5120. Both are quite beautiful guitars. My new 5420 has a deeper orange and the top, while not technically considered a figured wood, has such grain patterns as to almost appear burled. Really beautiful and the finish is excellent. I love playing it and hearing it's complex tone. Now for the bad. My first purchase was the Cadillac Green FSR 5420. It looked nice, sounded good, but the strings would not center over the pole pieces of the PUPS. If the bridge was moved to adjust this, it would spring back from string tension to its original position. I figured the Bigsby was not positioned correctly. Had to send it back and exchaged for the slightly more expensive orange model - which was dead on arrival - no sound from the amp when plugged in. Sigh ... I decided to fix it, figuring it to be wiring related. I resoldered several questionable looking joints and everything is fine now. I really liked the looks and feel and sound of the guitar otherwise I would never have gone to the trouble. The wooden base of the bridge was also not matched to the contour of the top very closely. I used some Stew-Mac tools and supplies to sand it to a perfect match. I know - this is a lot to do to an almost $900 guitar. It is beyond what is reasonable to expect for your money IMHO. Fortunately, I have enough experience to deal with some of these issues. This is typical of my experience with Asian guitars in this price range. Sometimes you get absolutely stunning value, sometimes you get a clinker - that's the way it is. Almost all of them require a good set-up. DIY or pay somebody competent. So, with all issues addressed, do I still love her? Yes, it was worth it for me. I would still recommend the guitar. Just a heads up of what you might expect of any brand in this price range. I have a great guitar now - but it took a little work to get it there. Seems typical these days.

The guitar has good tone and you can make some interesting sounds with the Gretschbuckers, but if you are going to spend close to a grand on a guitar, just buy an American made Gibson

I've wanted a Gretsch for years , and finally got one! I It was worth the wait . The tone out of this guitar is incredible ! Even out of a small practice amp , you can hear how beautiful it sounds. I've only had this guitar a couple weeks, but I'm very happy so far. Try this guitar , and you will like it .

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

The Gretsch is a nice-looking instrument that sounds and plays very well. I have experimented with strings and the 11's sound very good (mine came with 10's). The flat-wound strings do mellow the tone considerably and I'll probably go back to round wound for a better overall sound. The knobs (as others have mentioned) are not linear in response and are a bit redundant with pots for each pick up plus one for overall response. The bigsby works nice and it's not too difficult to re-string once you have the technique down. My 5420 is sunburst and is well done. The case is OK, but doesn't have the nice solid feel that some Fender cases do. One more negative is that the tuning tends to vary more than, say, a Strat. It is affected a bit more by temperature fluctuations: not bad, but it's still there. The overall quality of the guitar is very good. There is little to really complain about. It is really a jack of all trades for whatever music (other than really loud stuff) you play. One other thing...the posts for the strap are thick and need to be replaced for strap locks...a minor quibble. For the price, it's a really superb instrument.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar in sunburst used (described as mint condition) and must say it truly is mint. Not a scratch, mark or flaw that I can find anywhere. I am very impressed with the build quality of this instrument. It is truly striking in looks and the finish is beautiful. Frets are well done, no buzzes after I lowered the action and adjusted the truss rod. Selector witch and pots work great with no noise and no feedback through my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp. Love the Bigsby and set up on this guitar. The only thing I need to do now is adjust the height of the strings at the nut as they are high which is typical with a production guitar. I have a new set of TV Jones pickups I may install later but for now I a very happy with the sound. As a luthier I still can't figure out how they sell such a quality guitar for the price. I have found over the years that guitars made in Korea tend to be superior and this is a great example. I see no need to do a rebuild as another reviewer recommended with the exception of a few adjustments. If I want to install CTS pots and a different capacitor later on it is a cheap option but only it the OEM parts wear. Just an awesome guitar

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I own and play this Gretsch, an Epiphone ES-175, an American Standard Strat, a Squire Tele and a Gibson Hummingbird Pro. This Gretsch 5420 is the easiest to play as its action is very nice. It's a very comfortable size as it's thinner than a full size hollow body like the ES-175. I can see the fretboard as I play. The tone through my Fender Blues Jr is really pretty and full. I tried 2 of these out and they were both very nice. My wife thinks it's the coolest looking guitar she's ever seen. The Bigsby vibrato bar is so nice that I don't want to play a guitar without one now. I will get one for my Epiphone. After a couple days of adjusting the tuning a number of times with a new set of Daddario 11 to 52 (with an 18 wound G), the Gretsch stays in tune quite well. I play mostly rhythm guitar to sing and perform solo with so what I look for is a full balanced tone and to stay in tune, along with comfortable easy action. I will try other strings to try and hopefully get a little bigger sound from the bass strings. Daddarios are nice but my sets are too old to know for sure if their tone is like new strings. When you have one of these guitars adjusted just right and you strum a chord with a little reverb and just give the vibrato bar a slow wiggle, it's guitar heaven!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

The Gretsch 5420 is an excellent guitar. I have played pro lines, and I prefer how these play. The neck reminds me of a Les Paul. It's a great neck with perfect frets. The guitar is big, beautiful, and very light. These guitars are a perfect platform for modding, and I plan to get 3 more and mod them all, creating my own signature line! lol I got the Aspen green, and can't wait to get orange, black, and smoke green. With some TV Jones pickups, Compton bridges, and locking tuners, while they wouldn't have the same re-sale value, they'll be every bit the guitar that the pro lines are.

Have Taylor acoustic and Fender Tele. This guitar fills the gap between those beautifully. Looks great, plays great, sounds great. Lots of different sound options with the tone and volume knobs. Just gonna take some time to find the sounds that work best for me.
Should have come with a case.

The look and feel of this guitar is fantastic. Never goes out of tune, and sounds especially sweet in an all tube vox amp.
My only complaint would be how it was shipped to me. Packing of the guitar was terrible. I'm surprised it didn't get damaged. Other than that, great deal.

I played this through my Fender amp, sounded very bright with a bit of harshness distorted. Not very impressive. Played it through my Vox amp and it sounded absolutely heavenly. I've seen this with Lollar Thinline Tele pickups too, they're so "good" in their own way that they suffer in mainstream amp settings. So experiment before you decide. I bought this because it was built well, played well, and with some experimentation, had a really great distinctive sound. Can't beat that.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar is very poorly constructed. The input jack broke two times in one year and the strap pins and pick-up selector will fall off.

The guitar has good tone and you can make some interesting sounds with the Gretschbuckers, but if you are going to spend close to a grand on a guitar, just buy an American made Gibson
