Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar got my attention at the store due to its nice "vintage" aspen green finishing. I decided to give it a try and was impressed by the following:

    a) Craftsmanship: I could not find anything wrong with the guitar. The 2016 model has an "aged" multi-ply binding that matches the aspen green perfectly. Fretboard was impeccable. 5-ply maple, good quality rosewood (fretboard), pearloid inlays and GraphTec nut.
    b) Playability: comfortable neck, frets with rounded edges, great action and no buzz.
    c) Sound and electronics: the black top filter tron PUs have lots of twang and the Gretsch sound I was looking for. I like the midrange as well. They sound very dynamic and responsive. These are great PUs. Pots are not CTS, they are made in Korea but no concerns so far. If needed, it would cost me almost nothing to replace the pots with CTS ones and install a Switchcraft output jack.
    d) Hardware: good hardware. No issues and no need to replace anything. Bigsby B60!!!

The 2016 model plays, sounds and looks great right out of the box. It sounds amazing with my Vox and Carvin amps. This Gretsch guitar is proof that you don't need a very expensive guitar to sound great, in the studio or on stage. Just be careful with feedback as this is a full hollow-body guitar.
I have many guitars (classical, acoustic and electric), made in USA, Europe and Asia. I have bad g.a.s. and always look for a good deal based on quality, playability, sound and value.
Please trust me. This is indeed a great guitar. I couldn't resist and brought one home. By the way, I never sell or trade my guitars, so my kids will also enjoy this beauty. Thanks Fender/Gretsch/Korea for another great instrument.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Played in the shop several times and loved it. The pots are responsive andhave a good feel. The neck is amazing superr low action with no buzz at all. Beautiful fretboard that is not dry so it feels silky smooth. You can get anywhere from a jazz tone through rockabilly classic rock to even some punk sounds. Fiddle around with the individual volumes while having the master at full then don't touch the individual volumes just use the mast to clean up the gain so you can always go back to it with the master and keep the same tone. The tone knob works but is a lot! More subtle than what you might find on a strat unless it's all the way open or closed so I just keep it in the middle. The only things I don't think it would not sound like is metal and hard rock and those sort of styles. Although you can get a pretty thick tone. Also it doesn't really have that strat sound for like your Eric Clapton or John Mayer stuff but can still cover plenty of tones.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Gretsch is really producing a quality instrument for a reasonable cost with the 5420 line! Mine is the Orange stain color, and it is beautiful, with no visible defects. The neck is much more slender than most of my other guitars, but is plays wonderfully. Out of the box, the only adjustment it needed was to raise the bass side of the bridge to eliminate fret buzz on the lower 2 strings. I may have a buzz on the low E string saddle, but I can easily get that solid with a drop of thin CA glue, if it becomes an issue.

Sound quality is excellent, the blacktop pickups are strong, but don't loose the twang if you need it. Feedback is part of the game with a full hollow top...it is controllable, so I just take that as part of the territory. Switch gear and pots seem to be better quality than low level guitars I have played, so I am happy there too.
I'm going to switch strings over to D'Addario Half Rounds, to lessen finger noise, and see how that works, but even the supplied strings are good quality. I'll put on a set of strap locks after that and that should be all it takes to dial it in. Great job Gretsch, good job listening to customers and making the improvements on the 206 and up models too. Rock On!!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Bought this at my local music store..... Its amazing. Has the best cleans of any humbucker guitar out there but keep in mind it can't get slinky like a strat but still best clean tones out there. I would describe it as looking over a crystal clear lake where you can see a hundred feet down to the bottom. It gets even better when you add some OD or distortion. The bridge with some OD is hot and sizzling great for a balanced rhythm or searing lead. The neck pu is a little flat with OD and will take more gain and tone shaping to get the best sound. But that may just be how it pairs with my specific pedal. Be warned there is buzz but its from the bridge not the frets I would replace the bridge with roller saddles or a rockingbar like on the Pro models. Overall AMAZING guitar will never sell it ever. I bought it mostly because of the looks and unique factor and the tones did not disappoint. I play on stage for my church through a blues jr. with greenback Jensen speaker. Really nice because this is a BRIGHT guitar. Even on the neck so the speaker adds a lot of warmth to it. What I find best to solve the flat tone on the neck pu when using OD is to cut the tone to 0 then crank master and neck volume to 10 and you get a really awesome gravely crunchy blues tone.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Photos do not do justice to beautiful the color and binding are. Mine is Aspen Green. Fit and finish are flawless. I will bring it in for a setup, as I always do, but no major issues out of the box and I don't want to be away from it just yet. Only change I made was to put flatwound strings on, more traditional for a hollowbody. I like how it sounds unplugged, and the pickups do well with a lot of styles, from jazz to rockabilly. Hardware and electronics all work fine, no issues. I like the open tuners, and they seem to hold pretty well. This is my first guitar with a Bigsby. It does make the guitar heavier, but it has been fun to play with. I'd buy this guitar again in a heartbeat.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I play mine through a Fender Blues DeVille (tube amp with two 12"s) and the sound is great. I love the Bigsby vibrato (and have put them on a couple other guitars) because it lets you make your chords shimmer. Sure you can bend single notes but only a vibrato lets you be expressive with entire chords. I always get compliments on the guitar as it looks striking in fact it was my wife who noticed it on a wall of guitars at a store and said it was the most beautiful guitar she's ever seen. I took that as an "all clear" so I bought it. It stays in tune very well. The string action height is very low but without any problems. The width of the neck is wider than most guitars and the strings are slightly more spread out so it takes a little getting used to compared to say a Fender. My band mates urge me to use this guitar because they love how it sounds but I think that it's also because of the "cool vibe" it puts out with its retro looks. I've read that Stephen Stills and David Crosby were playing this model in the early days of Buffalo Springfield and it's what you hear on the solo in "For What Its Worth"

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I absolutely love this guitar. It is such a natural fit. The sound, unplugged or plugged, is wonderful. The neck is a little thicker than I am used to but it is still easy to play and if the thickness helps the sound, so be it. I own a Gibson Les Paul and Blues Hawk as well as a Tele copy and 175 knockoff. This 5420 is the one I pick up first and find hard to let go of. I haven't experienced feedback issues because of the hollowbody but I typically don't play at loud volumes. Great guitar for jazz, blues, Americana, whatever ...

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I've had this guitar for about 6 months now. It's really awesome. The build quality is excellent, not a single flaw, and the fairlane blue finish is *absolutely* *exquisite*. None of the pictures do it justice. When I opened the box I was like ":-O", and so were my kids. It was a pretty amazing feeling.

It came pretty well setup right out of the box, with fairly low action. A tiny little bit of buzzing, but not bad at all, I haven't bothered to take it for a setup yet, it's good to play as it was.

I find the neck very comfortable. Obviously you don't get this if you care about upper frets access, but everywhere else, it's a joy to play, I especially enjoy it for fingerpicking stuff (and bonus it actually sounds really good acoustically). It's just right...

It's very light and comfortable. I installed strap locks on it, like I always do on all my guitars.

Pickups sounds excellent, I really love them. Very tight and defined and clear, but they respond very well to distortion too. With some dirt it's perfect to play some blues. They can handle a reasonable amount of distortion and they honestly don't sound bad with high gain to play some metal rhythm stuff, it's fun.

I've had a few issues with the tone knob though, it gets kind of scratch sometimes. But it's still under warranty so if it comes to that it shouldn't be too hard to fix.

Bottom line: this guitar is going nowhere! I'm keeping it forever!
